He did a movie called Straw Dogs where he had to develop a Southern American accent, and it's just stuck since then. I'm pretty sure it's because of that movie, because before then, his American accent sounded more Swedish when he was in True Blood season 1.
i know as a lover of accents and wanna be actress myself, if i try to work on an accent, i end up slipping into that accent all the time. so... it may just be an actor thing to slip into accents on accident
