I believe one thing that made JB so dear to so many….he never did red carpet and limos and glam. I live on the gulf coast. I crab. I fish. I play golf. I drink a little beer every now and then. I play my guitar. JB was obviously a happy and simple man regardless his wealth. I’ve listened to his music since 73. I’ll listen to it the rest of my life I’m sure. This loss hurts.

I’m just a long time fan, nobody of any fame. The best tribute to Jimmy Buffet is to always love his music and his personality. But today I did go to a local restaurant and I ordered a Cheeseburger, French fried potatoes and a cold draft beer. My little tribute to Mr Buffet and his legacy. First beer I’ve had in 50 years, to you Jimmy Buffet and all that you have done. I’m glad to have known you music all these years.

I remember precisely where I was the moment I heard Elvis died. The same with John Lennon and George Harrison. And the same with every artist who has made an impact on my life and gone on. But Jimmy Buffett's passing last Friday has hit the hardest. Because he was so ingrained into the Keys and Key West, I think most people, like me, from around here thought he'd live forever. Because he spoke for the many crusty pirates with aging knees that moseyed up to any dive bar with a story to tell anyone who'd listen, Jimmy was both our spokesperson and our biggest cheerleader. Jimmy may have been all over the world, but he was our own-simply because he was one of us.
Musician, poet, sailor, vagabond, waterman, husband, father, friend...Jimmy was all of these to those who knew him and those he never met. But one didn't have to know him personally to hear about how his infectious smile, the joy he exuded everywhere, the extraordinary kindness and giving he always demonstrated, and so many other qualities to understand how unique he really was. Every song had a story because they meant something worthy enough to write down and share. It's because of this that we could feel as if we knew him up close and personal, with the right amount of vulnerability and sincerity to draw you in and keep you close. In a generation with few, if any, heroes left, he was our very own Mark Twain.
To be honest, I'm writing this as a means to mourn someone I never met personally but meant so much-to me throughout my life and even more so now as I get older and reflect back on regrets and my own mortality. I believe I'm speaking for many people who might be feeling the same way and thinking the party might be a little less fun or even coming to a close now that Jimmy's sailed on. But to give in and signal last call would be premature and a dishonor his work and legacy. If there was anything Jimmy Buffett taught us in his 76 years, it was this: live life to the fullest each day and take a moment to stop every now and then to soak in the beauty in the details or you just might miss them. I'm going to have to wipe the tears and breathe in, allowing the grief to go out with the wake. His music is everywhere now and although I get choked up, I'm listening to the words a little more intensely in order to hear the message.
Despite the short distance, I haven't been to Key West in a few years. In the wake of the loss, I'm afraid that Jimmy's ghost will become more commercialized now than ever before. As if the Buffett merchandising machine wasn't enough, I hope he doesn't become a Bob Marley although I fear it may be inevitable. But that's just me. I'm more introspective and I'll let Jimmy's music guide me through my grief and healing. After all, his was the soundtrack of my adult life and when better to play it. His music, and our combined love of the ocean. Geography, like money, sure can't buy happiness but it makes one hell of a difference and being near the water is my way to stay connected. THer's something about a sunrise or sunset near the ocean to keep you grounded and hopeful. I think I'll bring my rumrunner concoction and hope to catch a glimpse of him sailing on the horizon. It might take two or three but I'm not giving up.
So here's to you, Bubba. Thanks for the all the joy, the music and memories and the ones yet to come. I'll sorry you had to go. But feel free to start a tab, and I'll get the next round when we I get there.

@rogerreguera4133 : wow, perfectly said. You pretty much captured everything that I could have said from the heart when I heard on Labor Day Weekend last yr that Bubba JB had passed on. We must be about the same age, because yes, Jimmy has been part of my entire adult life. I first saw him perform in a small venue in Nashville (I grew up near Nashville) just before “Come Monday” had become a hit. And that was it for me. I never became a parrot-head, though. That seemed a bit too commercial & almost cult-like? 😬 (pls, folks don’t slam me for saying this. I know Jimmy loved you). Anyway, I did actually get to meet Jimmy Buffett along with a couple members of the Coral Reefer Band back in 1977. It was after a concert in a college town, my UVa roommate & I dropped by 1 of our fave bars in Charlottesville after the show…we walked in & could see Jimmy & some of the band sitting in the last booth…having a couple drinks. People in C’ville, fortunately, didn’t/still don’t make a fuss over famous people. When my very tall, blonde roomie & I stepped up to the bar, we heard a couple voices behind us say “hey ladies, why don’t you join us?” We turned & saw it was a couple of the coral reefer guys sitting in the booth with Jimmy…all of them with big happy grins on their faces. Roomie & I both looked at each other, then I said “Thanks, guys, but we’re good”. We paid for our drinks (neither of us liked having guys buy us drinks), then turned toward their booth, leaning back against the bar. And we just had a nice convo with the guys. Lots of laughter. I think Jimmy was tickled when he heard my Middle TN accent. ❤

My Mom is in bad shape and I drove 6 hours to Ohio to get to her today - “hey siri, play Jimmy Buffett” - it felt good to hear that lovely voice singing all of those stories - I heard Captain and the Kid for the 1st time today - now at Mom’s house settling down for the night before Hospital testing & specialist tomorrow - this video pops up on youtube - I can see across the room to a picture on the wall of my Grandpa, also a man that I am very proud to have learned so much from and still love so deeply - listening to Jimmy Buffet my whole adult life, I’ve always been attracted to how genuine he came across as being with a true gift of having such a wide range of beautiful songs to share with all of us - maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised to have enjoyed his Joe Merchant book - that was so very well written - if I ever met him, which I unfortunately never did, I would simply say “thank you” it is impossible to convey the positivity that his gift brought to my life

One of my favorite Jimmy Buffett songs. I have different categories for his songs, the tropical party tunes, the love songs, the Jimmy Adventure songs and then the Ones that just hit your heart and squeeze tears out of your eyes. The Capt’n and The Kid gets me every time. As a lyracist myself it’s songs like this that i just say “simply brilliant”. Jimmy’s versatility is truly amazing. I am saddened terribly to know there will be no more music coming from Jimmy Buffett and now his hand is on “the starboard rail, waving back at us”. RIP Mr Buffett 🙏 and Thank You!

He taught me good values, taught me the trades, painting, carpentry, all the building skills, would tell me stories of his time in the Marines, so I joined, spent 21 yrs, raised 4 kids, have 5 grand kids. Taught my kids the same things he taught me.

Such a great song,as he had a special close relationship with his grandfather, I had close relationship with both my grandfathers into my 20s and 30s. Love it. My doberman is registered as Captain and the kid, just because this song is so special.

My heart broke when we lost you Jimmy. I missed my one chance of seeing you play in Chicago due to a family emergency, I will regret that forever. I found your music at a black time in my life- it literally 'saved me'. I hope you have found your Grandfather - 'The Captain' always gets me - reminds me of my father who passed 2 years ago. Miss ya man - The skies are grey now and the world is dark without you J. I expect youre on the ocean now sailing forever. Calm oceans and following winds to a great man. - M

One of the first of Jimmy's songs I learned to play on the guitar. Always have loved this song because of the emotional ties to it.

Small story: I sailed with a friend from Chile I met in Mexico & I partnered with him on luxury catamarans that he sails/charters now in the Bahamas. I played and sang Buffett songs so I just assumed as a sailor he would know Buffett’s work. Being Hispanic he had never heard of him which i stored in memory. Later his Father had recently passed of cancer which I helped him through and we were sailing with his teenage daughter. So with the knowledge he didn’t know JB I told him I had a special song I made for him (don’t shoot me) & changed a little of the lyrics to match his story a little better. When I finished the entire boat of 2 Chileans, 1 Mexican, one German and me the only American was in tears. There’s nothing better than finishing a day of sailing tied down behind an island with a dinner, wine, and a couple of guitars playing different type music. Jimmy Buffett inspired this night as I clearly don’t have that talent. Thanks JB

While it’s a shame we all lost so much valid time to this medical sham, it produced these wonderful videos for us all to enjoy with the extra value of the verbal descriptions we usually never get to hear. These are great. We miss you Jimmy.

Although I never spoke with Jimmy, I do recall a wonderful summer afternoon in the Jerome bar seeing him in the corner booth - a few people around him and his broken leg. Perfect memory (except for his broken leg of courses).

It’s enough to make you cry, but he wouldn’t have wanted that….”one hand on the starboard rail he’s waving back at us” A whole story in just a few lines, genius.
