  • Sean Foley discusses one of the most common errors he sees with almost all amateur golfers: faulty alignment. You may think you’re aligned to the target, but chances are you’re just setting yourself up for a bad shot.

A problem that developed for me over the years was not a club face issue, but a body alignment issue. I’d address the club face square with the target line, feet would also be square to the target line, but my hips would be slightly open (maybe 5-10* open) to the target line. It caused all sorts of pulled and pushed shots. Did some body alignment to the target line work yesterday and the ball flight was what I had been missing for years. Cannot stress enough about body alignment at address being square to the target line!

That’s my problem as a beginning golfer is overthinking, I just need to align and practice being relaxed so I can have a groove nice swing. Thank you👍🏽👌🏽🤙🏽😎

Great lesson. I recall Ken Venturi said most golfers don't get out of swing, they get out of alignment.

Focusing on information like this and the takeaway would make 99% of golfers see massive improvement. Unfortunately 90% of the videos out there do not focus on this so most golfers rarely see much lasting improvement. It’s sad because most everyone could be a lot better than they are by focusing on this boring stuff instead of the sexy swing theories.

Great video! Something I often overlook. Very frustrating when you make a good swing and strike but still miss a green because your alignment is off!

Thank you for this. I got to the point where I can hit draw, fade, straight on demand but was still intermittently quite a bit off line, usually to the right and this process cleaned it right up! Damn optical illusions

Some days it feels so weird to line up straight and not feel like you're aimed 30 yards left.

This is very helpful to me as a new golfer. I’m just starting to improve my delivery of a neutral club face at impact and feel more able to work on my aiming now. It’s sometimes easy to overlook such basic things when focusing on several at once. Will be putting this method into practice immediately 🏌️‍♂️👍🏻

Dick Altman taught me how to aim a putt which may help golfers know how to sense a correct aim when standing to the side of the ball. While lining up a putt from behind place a dime 1 foot or less in front of the ball. The hole should be about 12 to 15 feet ahead. Players should line the putt up very well at the dime. Have someone block the view of the hole before lining up from the side. Most people can correctly aim their putt at the dime when standing from the side of the ball. Unblock the view of the hole & only then have the player rotate their head to look at the hole. It’s amazing, but some sense the hole to the right & others to the left and fewer dead on as their first impression of where they feel they are aiming. The same sense would be helpful when aiming from the side for any shot.

I’ve learned that you simply align like you’re lining up on a set of railroad tracks. The outside track is alignment for ball/club head to the target and your shoulders, hips and legs line up to the inside track. Very simply and effective

Excellent! Can you explain the following?
The club face and target line are further than your eyes and lead shoulder. So, when you set up and looking at target, would the lead shoulder be to the left of target?

I used to hit the ball pretty well. I never aligned from behind I just walked to the ball from the side. I bought a book and I started aligning from behind and looking for a spot about 3 to 4 ft in front of the ball. When I aligned it was as though the mark was now to my left. It made me stop rotating and ruined my swing I think. I dont think you need to look at the target from behind. Stand NEXT to the ball look where you wish to aim then approach the ball from the side take your grip set club near the ball, dont look for marks on the ground look at the target. This help you keep the club in front of you. Look at the target move your feet and body to align, if you look for a mark look for a mark BEHIND the ball this helps you align you right hand side and you can see the straight take away. When the club travels behind you its over you cant recover gonna hit a hook. In front of you, you can adjust to a degree misses are not as bad. Gold it a tough game if you hit the ball behind yourself.

    1. To the Quik: [Alignment & Swing]. Let it happen!
    (a) Let the [Left's Thumb Line] "align" with your [Shoulder].
    (b) Your [Aim] is now part of your [Grip & Swing].

I've been aligning clubhead first for years, but never with an intermediate target. I leave about an half inch to or inch gap between club and the ball and somewhat imagine there is a straight line from center of club to the ball and which direction it is pointing. I also do the same thing with putting and it's been working great lately, I don't use a line on my ball or anything. Honestly I dont think my feet even have to be aligned perfect. Like if my club head is good and they are at least close enough where I can freely swing towards the hole ( down my chosen line) it's all good

If alignment is correct and we swivel head or ear to ground to look at the target will target still look to the right?

If you don't know what your target is, the target then becomes the ball.

Shawn, your target line is left of the flag (center of the green over the bunker). Is that intended? Getting the target line right is pretty important too, as much as pointing the club face on that line.

Once you establish your intermediate point don’t look at the target in the distance again because now it will be to the left which will cause you to cut across the ball, as seen here. ruclips.net/video/uYaxbuNHiHo/видео.html
