I did a solo RT XNHAT ride in 2021. I rode first west to east. You are so right in that it is like a different trail on the return trip. I agree that the Presidential Trail section was the highlight. I used a motel in Gotham as my stay each way. One thing you didn't cover was to be prepared and careful of wildlife encounters. I came across a mamma bear and her two cubs. Luckily it was on a straight portion about one hundred yards ahead. I waited about twenty minutes after they sauntered into the woods before making a lot of noise and pedaling faster than I have ever before. Thanks for sharing your story. Makes me want to do it again.
Very informative video!!! was in Lincoln N.H. at the end of June for a week, rain kept me off my bike, I did know about the rail trail, was going to start at Goram brewery head south for a overnight, great job 👍 it's on my list,
Thanks for the information Mike! I just got my map in the mail and was a little concerned about the elevation profile. I feel much better about it now.
Thanks for all the great information Mike! I plan to complete a day ride from Littleton to Bethel in late June. Do you recommend bear spray? Or bug spray for that matter:)? Thx!
hey, have fun out there! i didn't see any bears on my trip, but quite a lot of the trail is stream-adjacent... didn't even think about it at the time. i guess having some spray along couldn't hurt. fwiw, the trail is never terribly far from a main road, and some of it is pretty urban. in terms of bug spray, bring all of it. i like ben's wipes. enjoy!
Great video. It was shared by a member of the Worcester County Women’s Cycling who is considering putting a ride together. Thanks for the excellent content.
hey liz, i did it in about 6.5hrs moving, maybe 7.5hrs with stops, one way, each day. i got a little turned around a few times, but nothing too dramatic. i had a little more fun on the return leg, for whatever reason, and went a little faster. i always tell folks that 85 miles with dirt sections rides more like a century, and i think that applies here. lots of ways to get it done. enjoy!
Well done Mike.

fear not! i would say you'll notice the climb more on a few of the paved sections than on the rail trail. have fun!
Hiked thru this area on the AT and may try this this summer. Love this area.
