When firing from the hip (prefered) or shoulder you aim using the tracers or bullet strikes. But it is an area support wepon.

We were trained not to shoulder fire the M60. It's just a ridiculous thing to do, there is no control, no accuracy and you're actually a liability on the battle field not to mention the waste of ammunition. It has a bi-pod for a very good reason and soldiers are trained to use it. The accuracy of the M60 is actually very good when fired form a supported position. That said has someone shoulder fired an M60 in a live fire mission? Most certainly, probably due to a desperate situation, but the correct action is to drop to a supported position and set up a sector of fire and suppress the enemy. Not go Rambo, as it was termed in the military.

I have not been trained with the M60 but I'm a former FN MAG gunner.
We were taught how to shoot while standing and kneeling by using the carrying sling (correct term?) to keep the FN in place (at hip-height). Those positions were only used when you needed a lot of lead in the air and didn't have the time to use the bi-pod.
Shooting from the shoulder while standing was/is a big nono though.

Who is "we" when you say "we weren't trained..."? The government training does not have the time to teach machine gunners to fire from the shoulder. A good machine gunner would learn this on his own, as it may be needed someday. Shoulder firing an M60 can be, and IS very effective with the proper understanding of biomechanics, recoil mitigation, and practice.

    • @williamhayden7711
      @williamhayden7711 9 лет назад +5

animalmother556x45 Ummm, you sound like you don't know what you are talking about. Correct, when I said "we" I am specifically speaking of soldiers in the United States Army. To say the "government" doesn't have time to teach machine gunners anything in the least shoulder fire is absurd. Again you speak like you have no clue what a soldier does from day to day depending on their job. You think soldiers are untrained? We were specifically trained NOT to fire the M60 from the shoulder. Clear enough? Good moving on.

never fired the m60, but my brother was in the national guard and he said that squad automatic weapons aren't always meant to "hit" enemies, just make them fear for their lives enough to limit their options. Suppressive fire is, ultimately something that's supposed to make the other guy feel like he's nowhere to go, and make them forget that staying put can be suicide.

My father was in Vietnam, and during his tour, they would rotate who carried the M60 in his platoon. When the weapon was assigned to him, he described it as "I did not have an M60, I was *with* and M60." In that sense, it was more like a partner, rather than an object. I once asked why, considering the weight and difficulty using it, was it his favorite weapon.

to whoever is asking about where to get m60's, talk to a FFL holder (Federal Firearms License). this licenses you as a legal firearms merchant, capable of presiding over firearms transfers. There is generally a fee on top of the value of the firearm as well as the cost of the FBI background check. FFL holders can be found on the internet and there are actually quite a few of them.

Also, when firing the M60 (I had an M60E3) from the TRI-POD, you had to use "forward shoulder pressure". That means you pressed your firing shoulder forward to take up slack in the Traverse and Elevation mechanism. When I was in we actually transitioned from the M60E3 to the M240G. The M240G used a "soft mount" That means it had little shock absorbers on the pintle mount. You did not have to use forward shoulder pressure to get a nice tight "beaten zone".

I'm no M-60 expert, and I know that lmg operators are very accurate with their system. but Lmgs in general are used for the suppressive capability to sling rounds down rang at a high rate of fire so hitting a spot over and over again isn't needed you just need to get the rounds close to your target.

Large caliber crew served weapons like that are not meant to be shoulder fired. However the thing to remember as well is they are not typically used as point target weapons either. They are more of a area target used for suppression.

I can't say anything about the M60, but I can about a MK48 and 249. The 249 is completely controllable when firing from the shoulder while standing. A collapsible butt-stock(as opposed to the full length 'pog' butt-stock) and foregrip helps a lot, but it is 100% controllable when standing if you know how to handle the recoil. Given, we are not talking about point fire, but a reasonable beaten area at moderate-close range. The weight of the gun tames the 5.56 recoil a lot. The MK48 has quite a bit more recoil, and I would assume it is close to an M60 with a slightly higher rate of fire but it is not unmanageable in short bursts. With that said, laying the gun on the ground or some other support turns both from 'meh', to tack drivers if you have a good gunner. The 240 is so ludicrously front heavy and awkward that firing from anything other than mounted or prone is only good for immediate suppression when you can't properly deploy or are just trying to immediately hose hate onto bad people from a short distance.

Accuracy and suppressive fire comes from the stability of the gun and short 3-5 round bursts. So best position would be the gun down on a bi-pod or resting on a sandbag. Shooting on the move is unlikely with a platform like this as they are heavy and inaccurate. When the gun group moves, everyone else lays down suppressive fire.

What basically happened on the full-scale "blow-it-out-of-the-water" experiment was the same thing that happens with highly energetic phenomena across the universe such as quasars and the death throes of a star that's collapsing into a black hole: that is... jetting. Whenever an explosion encounters uneven resistance, it will always be shaped according to the path of least resistance: In the case of a collapsing star, that path would be the star's north and south rotational poles -- as those are where the star will be at its thinnest. Therefore, as the envelope of a star whose core has become a black hole blows out, just about all of the blast's energy gets directed into polar jets. The same thing happened with the full-scale experiment. In this case, the path of least resistance was "into the air". Therefore, the boat was split in two by the resulting jet of water and gases. In the case of a quasar, the paths of least resistance are an active galactic nucleus's north and south poles -- exactly perpendicular to the galactic plane (which is most resistant to the quasar because there is so much more gas and dust in those directions than perpendicular to the plane). Yes, that's right! The same phenomenon that occurs in collapsars (collapsing stars whose cores have become black holes) and quasars occurred in the full-scale "blow it out of the water" experiment!

To answer Jamie's question, a lot of the time, they will be in a fixed position or vehicle mounted when it comes to "machine guns" ie: crew served weapons (this would include the m60 or 240), sometimes they can be used by a single dismounted/mobile person, however most of the time it would be shot from the prone, in the rare instances someone may be firing dismounted and standing it would be likely with small bursts while shouldering the weapon. So to answer the question you usually wouldn't be shooting it in a much less wieldy position.
I dont want to speak for other units, because Im sure there are some 0351's that probably have humped it around (and one Marine in my platoon did a 10 mile dismounted patrol with a 240) however most dismounted patrols in my experiences in Iraq we would typically not have a crew served machine gun in the patrol, as most of our patrols were only a fireteam (4-6 people including me). Instead we would have an "automatic rifle" which was a m249. I think technically the 249 is supposed to be crew served, but we would always run them with a single rifleman, typically with a 249, spare barrel, and 600-1000 rounds of linked 556. While to most people the 249 may seem like a machine gun, it falls under the definition of auto-rifle and is a much easier automatic weapon to control and much more mobile and even though it may not have the effective range of a "machine gun" it can be much more practical for small units and other situations. Also while the 249 can be shot more easily from the standing, the money maker position is still going to be prone. Hope thats a little bit of insight.

I remember watching this episode when it first aired and being upset that they used the wrong Cadillac for their trunk rig. Not because the results were any different, but because it was a nice car. Breaking Bad used one of those ugly boxy Cadillacs introduced in '77 (a style they kept around on certain models even into the '90s). You could shoot up a dozen of those and I wouldn't care. But MythBusters used the previous more attractive body style that was only around for a few years (and which was a much nicer vehicle, both then and now).

I am possibly late to help answer the question put forward about the machine gun by Jamie but there is something in the military called Machine Gun Theory. This fully explains how this weapon system is not a point target system but an area target system they are designed not to shoot a straight line but in a cone to land into what is known as a beaten zone. that being said if you had mounted the weapon system to a tripod and or just used the bipod in the prone position you would have effectively made the system much more accurate to aim and fire. That is purly because the system is not ment to be held like that and fired accurately when firing like that is not about accuracy but to simply put more lead down range to provide suppressing fire and keep the enemy head down. once again somebody may have answered this already but this is my personal experience with these weapon systems and a vast amount of others.

My comment on the actual episode on some of the gun ignorance displayed by the writers: "So many gun errors. I'm sure the narrator doesn't write his own script, but, SOMEONE with a brain should check the words used. It's "cute" to refer to any gun as "heavy artillery" but it is absolutely incorrect. A machinegun is not artillery - heavy, light or whatever. At about 7:45, the narrator says, "for safety, he's going to start slow by not going full auto..." Uhhh, yes he was firing on auto. He was just firing in automatic by using bursts (the normal way to fire a machinegun) as opposed to one long continuous burst. Then at 8:30 and again 9:30 the word "tripod" is used in place of "bipod". Tri = 3 (you know, like a tricycle has 3 wheels) and bi means 2 Sheesh, that's all in the first 10 minutes!"

@Jamie I was assigned this weapon while in the 25th Infantry Division and fired thousands of rounds through the M-60. We rarely fired more than a burst 3 to 5 rounds "roughly" at a time. In general, we fire in the prone position with the bi-pod or tripod, if you have time to set it up. They make for a much more stable platform then free handing the weapon. At times the belt will twist or bind if not properly supported complicating the feeding of the weapon in a shoot and move situation. Practice makes perfect, shooting the M-60 you learn how to handle it and compensate for the recoil and also manage the belted ammo if you need to move often. The M-60 had it;s flaws but over all satisfying to shoot even at extreme ranges out to 1100 meters.

Jamie, you had the rear sight on your M60 folded down....from the shoulder the weapon is not very effective....off the bipod with the shooter in a prone position with the rear sight in the upward position so you can aim the weapon .. you have the power of god in your hands.

samdiego Yeah when making choices on how to tackle a myth, that is in work space where everything is very much open to interpretation, that is still not the same as "not being able to stand each other".

the only way to aim an M60 is on the ground with a tripod stand and someone kneeling on you to keep you steady, otherwise it may as well be an UZI

    • @Wienerslinky

Not really. it is so heavy that if you can carry it the weight will counter the recoil and you can actually fire it fairly accurate.

Jamie the answer is that you don't hold it! Haha! You lay on the ground and fire it. You might fire your first rounds standing if you are ambushed.

  • @jalexwheeler7751

In a rapidly evolving situation, you aim by watching the impacts. The same as a garden hose.
Tracers help, but then everyone knows your position, so a lot of people remove the tracers from a belt.
In an ambush or overwatch situation, the sights work just like any other firearm, and you use short controlled bursts.

Honestly ... watching them blow up stuff right in front of a whole wall of boxes seems stupid. Get an empty room for such experiments!
Using plastic boats seems rather stupid too, because they wont have the stability of regular large scale boats.
Also: as usual they use far too much explosives, so there is no science involved.

  • @SS2LP

Surprised they didn't use the bi-pod but eh oh well. Still though gotta love all the military guys all commenting the same thing. Don't care for all the disrespect some of them are giving to other people. Would hope they would have a bit more respect than that. Yeah we get it you're supposed to firing from down low on the bi-pod, but i mean warzones aren't the kind of place where you have all the time in the world to do whatever you want. Better to know how to shoulder fire, or hip fire if you're using tracers, and not need it than to need to and not be able to. Life doesn't always allow for supposed to.

    • @TheGoober2100
      @TheGoober2100 8 лет назад

Dude from your comment you obviously aren't military and you say you've seen the comments from the guys in the military who operated the m-60 say that it is strictly a in cover supported fire gun so why would you say that war does not allow you to do use the weapon how you are supposed to when I'm sure plenty of the former military members have seen service and had to use their m-60 while under fire it doesn't make any sense why you would try to refute their statements

Had the chance to fire both the Vietnam M60 (seen here) and the later E3, which had a slower RPM and a optic rail on it. It’s a general purpose machine gun and it’s probably best to shoot it using the bipod.
