  • Welcome to the largest farm consignment auction on the East Coast! (at least that's how the Whitney Point Spring consignment auction is advertised). I spend a day showing you around a farm consignment auction, looking at the interesting equipment for sale, and explaining how auctions work. I even buy what I was looking for at the end of the day!
    Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products

Auctions have their own culture. I've seen newbies get taken to the cleaners because they were unfamiliar with how to bid. My advice is to go to a few auctions before you buy anything. They are great entertainment.

That tumbler you were pointing at that you were trying to figure out what it does, pretty sure it's for screening rocks out of soil...you take a big old scoop of dirt you want to screen, the tumbler spins and releases dirt through the sieve, and the rocks are retained inside the tumbler, then you go dump them in your fencerow. I haven't seen one just like that, but I've seen similar type doodads. That one there actually looks like a pretty nice design.

I love these videos. My grandfather was a farmer through the great depression and by the time he retired, his operation was worth millions. When I was a kid, you'd walk around the farm and find all sorts of re-used materials. You'd even find entire buckets of old used rusty nails where he'd pry them out when a fence was being replaced. I could see him out at a farm auction like this, looking for deals.

I worked for an auctioneer. The reason for the mixture of different things in the middle is to hold the crowds interest. For example you might be interested in old tractors but another person might be interested in newer tractors or trucks or bailers. By selling a truck, then a old tractor then a manure spreader then another truck the auctioneer keeps everyone in the crowd. If he sold a line of tractors for example one after another, the truck people and the bailing machine/manure spreader people would start walking away. Some of them wouldn't come back. It's all about controlling the crowd and keeping them with the auctioneer.

Thank you for that, Pete. Machinery auctions are so similar where ever we live. You could just as well have been in my country, Ireland, at one. You are so right about on line or phone bids. They all may be legit. but there is always that “hmmmm, I wonder”. Sometimes, we loose our sanity at auctions and bid for items we do not really need, or sometimes overpay beyond the value.
I really enjoyed this day out with you. 👏👏👏

Stopped going to equipment auctions years ago. The last two that I went to was to buy a trackhoe and a John Deere 4850. Both auctons were to be a absolute auction with the owner of the equipment not to be able to bid against you. I checked out both items before the aucton and talked to the owners of the condition about the equipment. On auction day I was the high bidder until someone came in and the actioneer would always let him bid the item up another 50 to 25 dollars and then work hard at getting me to bid up. Smelling a rat I stopped bidding and left the equipment with the other bidder. While I was walking away the owners walked up to me and asked me if I was willing to buy it for my last bid. I told both of them no, that they could pay for it to be hauled back home to their place. After that I did not wast my time buying equipment at the auction.

If your item your bidding on, is really higher value than your bid, it's not unusual for the auctioneer to have someone bidding for him, then he can store the item till he can sell at a better price, or put it in another auction himself..

(Possibly had my mom put her email on a mailing list since he didn’t have email and avoided the internet in general himself…) I have a few items he bought to help get the auction started as he was waiting to get through the household stuff to get to the barn/shop where his real interest lay. My mom and I were brought gifts of things he thought we would enjoy. Sometimes we would get a call just after he arrived and be told that we should actually come to it as there was lots of things that we would want there.

Back a trailer or truck underneath and let it spin, compost gets ground down to small bits that fall thru the screen. Very handy.

That huge bucket is for picking stones out from the dirt. It rotates so it is very handy in cleaning a huge stone debry field. Pete, have you thought of making your own manure spreader? Not much engineering needed but it would mean the cost of the raw materials may become a issue?

Love going to Auctions I go to about 2 a month. You can get a lot of good deals but it's important not to bring home junk.
