You are on another level sir, a truly blessed man. This is the best fig video I have seen yet and not even one fig was sampled. Its not all about the taste for you it's about a lifetime of stories and memories. Thank you for sharing
You made me tear up with your story about your father commenting on your fig. Thanks for sharing your stories and your special passion for figs. Thumbs up
Thank you for watching and for commenting. My father passed away eight months after I posted this video and I get emotional thinking about it also but treasure the many memories. The first Black Madeira fig I shared with my dad the jammy pulp got on his shirt and he was not too happy about that even though his parents were from Madeira! But he enjoyed many more in the years following. I'm glad my father shared with me that my grandfather also had a passion for growing fruit trees and that mine finally made sense to him.
Very good video. You're right, there's more to the love of figs than taste. My interest in other varieties of figs resulted from pursuing a desire to make fig preserves like my grandmother made. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow...
I'm just trying to learn how to grow and maintain them. Now moving to getting some figs to taste good, then in the hunt for the best varieties that work for our family.
Thank you for sharing so much with us.as for myself, i to remember that fig tree in back of my father's tool shed. as for retiring, maybe you just need a good vacation,go to the motherland during fig season and look for that elusive fig and bring back some awesome video ! I lost my father in 2003 i know what you are going through.GOD BLESS you and stay strong..
Loved this video!!! Knowing the history behind these varieties and how you acquired them was good to watch. All of the people you know and referenced as introducing several varieties was impressive. Great information for current and future fig lovers one & all.
'Violet de Solliès' keeps it shape well when fully ripe, at least when grown in the right climate, that is one of the reasons that it makes such a great jam. Climate can help a lot of people make up their minds what to keep and what to not keep, climate can actually make different fig varieties less different from each other, not something that could happen so much in your climate. As you know when figs are pollinated they can taste different, have a different texture and be better quality. Yes, some people are so used to figs being a certain way, and some of them they have high fig standards, they can be like 'that is not a real fig' when they try a different kind of fig. It does not take long for birds to figure out that the scare tape is harmless. I have lots of family in Malta, yet I have only been there once since I gained an interest in fig trees, I was surprised how early their fig trees stop producing VS here in the 'South Eastern USA'. I have 'Malta Purple Red', and I have 'GM #142', both are very good, do you have 'GM #142'? it's sort of like Smith!
Hello Alan, hope you are doing well. I do not have GM 142. I have a GM 144 that has not fruited yet, the others are listed at www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm You can contact me via email shown on my web site if you wish to discuss further, thanks.
We use three systems to help limit damage. We also previously tried organza bags but our birds pecked right through those easily. Here are videos on two systems: ruclips.net/video/NSSglyrJp4I/видео.html ruclips.net/video/mJNS_IvOS24/видео.html Additionally, we later installed an expensive automated green laser light system to help scare away birds.
😀 you started off saying you don’t like to nail down your favorites but you sure seemed to enjoy talking about them all! Thank you for the videos, I enjoyed hearing about all the different types. Do you post the cuttings for sale in January?
I only mention a few of my favorites, giving examples of why I like some figs a lot. I have maybe 50-100 favorites, but haven't put that list together yet! :) Our annual cuttings sale will be posted on our Figaholics web site again in January. Watch there or our Facebook page for updates, see links in channel description.
Your farm sounds fantastic! Never knew there were so many varieties. How/where did you accumulate all those varieties? Do you sell cuttings after you prune?
We acquired cuttings from other collectors, some through eBay, some from friends, etc. There is a very strong group of small growers who collect like me. We have an annual cutting sale each year that started last Friday. Most varieties sold out already but still have some nice ones available at www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm
I understand you, it does not mean that he retires from life, it is like Forest Gum, that after being running for some time, he stopped. I live in Phoenix area and I bought 5 in a pot because they were 2 years old and I was entering the summer and I better not plant them, but, it was hard work moving them from one place to another looking for shade because their leaves were burning and I said, next spring I plant them and none more, fertilizing, water, care, sun, birds and headaches that gave me the intense sun, if any case, I will graft and be happy. Many times we have to stop to see that there are many beautiful things around us, sometimes we put a lot of passion into things that actually end up just being things. Being human and enjoying the wonders of God is transcendent, if you have the opportunity, take it.
I select any variety that appears to be growing vigorously for me. Also, I often find wild seedlings and these are often vigorous growers that I sometimes use to graft onto.
@@siamak1 We do not have any fresh figs being sold at this time, from late July to mid-September our figs have been offered at the two Bi-Rite markets in San Francisco and also Corti Bros. Market in Sacramento.
I said I didn't want to give more information about it. It's one that I refuse to sell because its significance is related to an event tied to my religious faith which is not for sale.

How funny. I just asked what your top 3 are. Forget an answer. This summed it up. Seems it's "depends" after watching this vid. Lol Best to you.

@@Figaholics Hello Harvey,
All is going good despite all that has happened in 2020, I will e-mail you later.
And my wife thinks I'm crazy with the five or six varieties that I have!... or is it seven?
What do you do about birds eating your figs …..thank you for your wonderful videos.

Thank you for all your videos and useful informations. I soon may run out space. What is the best root stock grafting in San Francisco East Bay Area?

@@Figaholics Thank you. As soon as lock down get eased. I will try to find your figs in SF. Is any particular market that sells you figs?

what's the one you mentioned after 3rd or 4th year?
What zone is this?
Could you please to type the names of your favorite fig varieties in the description ?
I don't have such a list as I tried to make apparent in the video.
Please look at my variety list at www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm for the variety names

Ok, thanks. Missed that part. Good for you.
Which one is best for jersey weather
A greenhouse! :) Or better ask someone from NJ! :)
Love to hear you talk :)
Violette de Solliès, I speak french and your former way of pronouncing Solliès was much closer to the french pronunciation.
Okay, thanks
