I have the Tracy Lewis Performance Air oil Seperator. I enjoy it, it doe's its job, and no complaints.
Great video, thanks for being thorough and not dragging this out longer than it needs to be. I have a 2014 Sierra All Terrain and just learning about these catch cans now. Sucks we have to remove them in winter though, but it seems like a quick install/removal. Subscribing to check out the rest of your videos!
Welcome!
Here’s the follow ups, watch in order:

@@Donslife Why would you need to remove it in the winter time?
I have that same UPR on my 2021 6.2 AT4. Just checked it today for the first time. About 1oz. of oil in it in 800 miles. Left the oil in it and will re-check at 3K. No increase in fuel milage that I can tell. I still get between 16.5 and 17.5 mpg per tank. And that's including the addition of the S&B cold air intake and Borla S type true duel cat back exhaust. Wish my gas milage was better.
Did you do a tune?
I installed one on my 6.2 Trail Boss. I like it catches that contaminants so the engine is protected...
I have a JL oil catch can LOVE IT!
It’s the size of the can that really matters. Think about the engines with a turbo . Now with a turbo I wouldn’t bother , cause of air flow, or vacuum flow. After three years with a 6.0 Chevy I only had 2 inches of crap in catch can.
I am searching for your Video where you started your AT4 in -40°C?! You auto started in, it didn't start the first time but it did the second. I forget the topic of the Video, maybe Battery Health in super cold weather, or startimg your Truck in super cold weather. It was a great video to represent what -40° C does to your vehicle. Fun Fact -40°C and -40°F are the same, Crazy! 🤯
It was probably this RUclips short. A cab dropped me off from the airport, back home and needed to use my truck that same morning. It sat for 3-4 days not plugged in. So I plugged it in for a very short time, but I had to get going and remote started it. For some reason the video went viral.
Harsh Cold Start -40° I SHOULD’VE Plugged In Longer. Full Details in the Video Description

@@Donslife My man this is it!! I must of watched 50 of your Videos last night! 😂
I thought it was a longer Video, man that is one Crazy Cold Start!! It even started on the first time too...
Thank you for finding it, you rock!!
#Subbed!!
You mentioned better fuel mileage hopefully. Have you ever done a video on what kind of fuel mileage you are getting before and after the mods.?
Hey don, I chose elite engineering and their catch cans, they are also a good brand but what set this apart from say elites E2-x which I have. I find it works very well for PCV flow. I also opted for their CSS (clean side separator) which works effectively as well but not as good as the catch can it’s self! Do you think you will install a css or are you leaving it up to GM’s Gen V clean side valve cover baffles? Direct injection is good but I find this is a bug killer for gas direct injection!
I guess the 6.2L has the PCV on the driver side, on my AT4 5.3L it’s on my passenger side, I only have about 10K miles now, so I’ll probably wait till I get closer to 20K to think about a catch can
Hi Don, great video, now I have an 1989 chevy g20 5.0ltr with a PCV on the right valve cover and a vent on the left valve cover. There is blowby exhaust from these ports and need to know if the PCV is necessary with a catch can?
Best answer : Results may vary. There is a good forum here that might you.
ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/1244320-catch-can-without-pcv.html
Wow thanks for the link Don, I guess to evacuate a positive crankcase to a negitive is the point? I don't think they realize that the catch-can is a vacuum boost much like a brake booster or accessory vacuum ball booster and the increase of vacuum with a PCV before catch-can changes the balance to vacuum vurses crank pressure. This requires vacuum and pressure gauges between crankcase and manifold to find a sweet spot. Also there is no mention of the vent side to the intake in relation to the PCV valve to the intake, vent is low vacuum while PCV is metered vacuum. I agree with "nowhereman" that the PCV should be after the catch-can for better metering.
Hey don i love all ur videos u rock .... so i just both a gmc sierra 1500 at4 3.0 ..... so i was wondering what catch can is compatible for my truck if u can help i will appreciate u sir
Thanks, there are not any I can find that are specifically for the 3.0 Duramax. You may have to consider a universal set up. Here is one website that might be a good place to start
www.xtremediesel.com/gm-2020-duramax-30l-parts-accessories/engine/pcv-system
@@Donslife hey big guy thx u very much for replying u rock ....and thx for the link i will look in to it ....I already both a bunch of stuff by just looking at ur videos we appreciate u very much for ur info god bless keep the good work stay safe .
Depending on your climate - Freezing moisture (condensation) can be a real problem if you don’t maintain the catch can, so keep that in mind for winter.
Hey Don I live in Northern Ontario where’s the temp get to -40 and I never had a problem with the catch can. You don’t have to take it out in the winter
@@chakabanaca3772 Do you park outside or inside? I was warned that the can and lines can condensate and in turn create ice particles. Mainly an issue if parked in the extreme cold for 12-24hrs at a time. Believe me, I’d like to leave it in all the time. Seemed risky and the warnings were pretty clear in the literature.
@@Donslife Hey Don I park out side under a car port where I still get hit with wind. And never had a problem with my catch can in the winter
@@chakabanaca3772 good to know! Thank you
Have recently purchased 2019 sierra SLE X31,with 5.3 litre, I have purchased the same oil catch can that you have and trade to do the exact same stall with the drain hose? My question is that have you checked from your dipstick to see if you were getting a lot of blow back in the winter time as most of the contaminants that wind up in the catch can is mostly water, and I was wondering if this does not freeze up in the filtering material in the catch can , as I am from Winnipeg Manitoba. We also get nasty winters. Anyways, my question is have you ever had issues or checked blowback from your dipstick to see if the filtering material is plugging up and needs to be cleaned whether it’s summer or winter and I think you can check the blow back afraid pulling your dipstick out and placing a long cone shaped piece of paper in there and seeing if the oil is spraying out onto the paper or not.
What was your mileage when you installed the catch can? I’m at 15k on Silverado 6.2 and thinking about the same UPR catch can. Better a little late than never I guess. The more I’ve researched the more I feel like I need to do this
I would say around 8000 miles give or take
Hi I have 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 liter and I am looking to install a catch can I like the one you have but when I am going to buy it it ask my to select lot ops do I just add magnet drain plug or do I need to select everything
Some of the options are more important for boosted engines. Mine has the check valve, extra o-ring and magnetic drain plug.
Best thing you can do If you a GDI engine
Mishimoto makes the best one. I own it and it’s great. Much better position than that also
Nice
I installed a upr catch can and blew out my rear main seal in the winter
You still running the spacers on your wheels if so any issues with that?
Running them and no problems or regrets
Would it be still good to put on a GMC Canyon with 120,000 miles on it?
In my opinion it can’t hurt
Don; Did you install the One Way Breather on your Catch Can System?
I have the one way check valve but not the one way crankcase breather valve
Does that setup works on 2019 gmc yukon denali 6.2L V8
They most likely do, but I would contact them and inquire.
How do you, rate the oil catch, can separator?
I feel good about mine. 87.34/100
Will a 5.3 Benny with a catch can??
I don’t see why not?
Heard good things about it.
Same here!
Do you need one for both sides?
No sir
Does this mean you are going to take it off before taking it in to the shop? Because it voids the warranty if they see it on the vehicle
Following
🤣
Easy to take off if I feel I need to
Why would it void the warranty? Putting different tires on a vehicle can void a warranty if they want to push it…
According to the Magnuson-Moss Act, a vehicle manufacturer cannot automatically cancel your warranty just because you’ve installed aftermarket car parts. This is an illegal practice. That said, if your aftermarket part somehow causes or contributes to a failure in your vehicle, the dealer may be able to deny your warranty claim-as long as they can prove the connection. In these cases, the burden of proof is entirely on the dealership. So if you install new wipers, non oem and your air conditioning stops working they can void your warranty if they prove the new wipers caused it….🤷🏼♂️
did your lifters ever fail
No sir
I talked to my dealership and they said catch cans voids my warranty if I install it.
They are lying......they cant void warranty for a catch can. I called GM direct and my buddy is a GM service manager and I checked with him before installing mine and he said no issue on the warranty. I'd find a new dealer.
So why did you end up removing it???
It can be problematic in severe cold if you don’t empty it frequently enough. I did a follow up video with the addition of a drain line
THOSE TYPES OF CANS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO FREEZE WHEN THE WATER SEPERATES AND SETTLES ON THE BOTTOM. THEY HAVE TO BE LARGE ENOUGH AND CHAMBERED THE CORRECT WAY SO IF THEY DO FREEZE THE TRUCK CAN STILL WARM UP AND THAW IT OUT. AFTER ABOUT 20 MINS YOU WILL GET OVER 200 DEGREES GOING THROUGH THE CAN AFTER THE OIL WARMS UP IN THE WINTER
Good points, UPR themselves had a warning against freezing
Did you spark plugs?? You do know there are no spark plugs in these engines
The 6.2L V8 L87 does use spark plugs
NGK LTR5IX-11 #4344 Spark Plugs - Set of 8 Iridium Plugs for 2014+ LT Based Gen V Engines 5.3L 6.2L LT1 LT4 L83 L86 L87 L84 L82
Huh? Says who?
@Robertdikoho3213- This isn't a diesel motor. It is a gasoline motor so it will have spark plugs.
