Liza Minnelli Talks Will Ferrell, Tony’s & More

  • One fantastic perk of working the Broadway scene is the opportunity to randomly meet an entertainment legend. Today’s star power doesn’t come anywhere near that of stage and screen greats like Frank Sinatra, Ethel Merman or Judy Garland. There was a time when stars like those were all over town, both here in New York and back home in Hollywood. As time goes on, there are less and less powerhouses left to entertain us. So, when I got the call that Liza Minnelli, one of the great entertainers, was willing to sit down for an exclusive interview, it didn’t take much convincing before I agreed to shoot it. And the setting couldn’t have been more appropriate for the likes of Liza. The famed Sardi’s on 44th Street in Midtown.
With Liza’s caricature hanging on the wall, we sat her down to chat with Jim Caruso, a cast member in “Liza’s at the Palace” and our good friend. The whole afternoon was exciting, as Liza was her energetic and entertaining self. One highlight from the interview is when Liza turned the tables on Will Ferrell. Conan O’Brien’s The Tonight Show kicked off earlier this week with Will as its first guest, and during his interview he joked that a vote for Liza at the Tony Awards was like a vote for a “commie.” Other great moments from our Liza interview was her reminiscing about “Arthur” co-star Dudley Moore, giving a shout out to singer Pink and fawning over “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” star Vincent D’Onofrio. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed shooting it. Take note, it’s over 20 minutes long. Now I’m going to dust off my “Arthur” DVD and get caught between the moon and New York City.

I was fortunate enough to meet Liza at George Abbott’s birthday party at the Roseland in June of 1987. I will never forget her generosity and love she extended to me. We named our elder daughter after her. We decided this when we saw her do THE ACT. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

Anyone else hear him go "wanna do a line?" and think he was trying to offer her coke? I think she thought that too for a moment.
She seemed to make the same pause that I did when he said that. I was thinking "does he think she is still doing coke?"
It may seem like she's high, she's just liza. I just hear her talk for a few moments and It makes me smile.

What a wonderful interview by Jim with Liza. One could tell how much they adored each other, and rightfully so. Liza was such a delight through the whole interview. Yes, her reminiscence of her mom and of Dudley Moore were terrific and touching. And yes, they did win the Tony. And Jim, I am so happy Birdland was saved. This was a wonderful, wonderful interview.

You can definatly hear Judys voice in Lizas. I always felt the same though about her looks. I could see her father. Although her look was very different. I think part of that was also Lizas style was very different from her mom. And now that shes a bit less with the crazy energy I see Judy in her look.
Both of them had such a good heart and wish I could have met her mom. I've come close to meeting liza. I've hung out with Sam Harris and talked about liza which that's almost like Ive met her. Lol

She is SO cool! What group besides QUEEN could draw such diverse acts to their show (A Concert For Life) in 1992 from groups like Black Sabbath and Metallica AND Liza Minnelli?!! What solo artist such as Michael Jackson could draw artist in his career as diverse as Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Carlos Santana, and, yes, Liza Minelli?! (...and sample YES?).

Like her mother a lot more, but just discovered Liza in her cameo parts as “Lucille 2” while binge-watching the outstanding ‘Arrested Development.’ She is a total hoot and delight. Why didn’t her people nudge her toward comedy when she was seeking to build a film career beyond Cabaret? She’s a genius comedienne. In good comedies she might have had a huge leading lady career. Whatever the case, in spite of her difficult times, she seems like a good egg. And such a kick on Arrested Development.

I think even if Judy Garland had fun playing her audiences, there was a real part of her that while performing, went beyond the ordinary. I mean if you ever looked into her face in the final moment of a musical climax, you would see someone completely caught up in a moment of ecstasy. That bordered into fantasy. As though she has given herself completely into the reality of a song. Forgetting time and space. I’ve never seen another singer approach this kind of connection to the story and feeling of a song.
