      Well give an example of what one looks good. Personally I like Mikka Hakkinen the simple design and colors of white 2 shades of blue and black stripe helped the sponsors placement look clean. Helmets of today look like a mess of color and sponsors and I feel Schumacher helped make popular.

    They talked more on the lines of the most "Iconic" liveries. I feel like in terms of design. Alot of drivers had nice liveries that weren't necessarily iconic. Kimi's standard McLaren Helmet was nice but the Monaco 2005 and 2006 versions were badass. Alonso's McLaren helmet in 07. Robsergs German themed "VI" Mercedes helmet from 2014. Jenson Button's Japanese themed helmets he'd wear at Suzuka. Vettel's Singapore helmets for 2012, 2013, 2017. Hamilton's golden/colorful Abu Dhabi helmet 2017, red Michael Jackson COTA 2013 helmet, and random ass blue Maylasia helmet 2015...and the list can go on and on.
    They dropped the ball here. Could have been a nice video to discuss alot of badass helmets that drivers have worn and one-offs, etc that many ppl dont remember, have never seen, or have forgotten over time. But instead we got the typical "Senna/James Hunt, etc helmet was so iconic" conversation we've all heard a thousand and 22 times.

    • @E9G
      @E9G 5 лет назад +1

      Agree! Who the driver is doesn't impact the design itself; yes, it does help make the design more memorable or 'iconic' if it belongs to a great driver. I'd like to see a more design-based discussion, looking at colour harmony, layout, optical illusion, special effect paints, and other techniques used in helmet paint, such as gold leaf, hand pinstriping, holographic vinyls etc. Some of Vettel's helmets (Jens Munser Designs) are just incredible! There's so much creativity out there to look at, these designs were rated more on the merits of the driver rather than of the design itself.

      Same here! That Singapore 2010 helmet was something else. His Ferrari-era design is my current favorite. It's got the simplicity of an 80's-era helmet with a modern touch, and in the cockpit of the red Ferrari it really stands out. Back in the days, drivers were recognized by their helmets, especially from a distance on the racetrack, and sometimes, the simplest graphics worked the best. The choices picked here were very good, but I would like to add some of the simple, yet very recognizable liveries from an audience standpoint.
    1960s: Lorenzo Bandini, Jim Clark, Jo Siffert, Denny Hulme
    1970s: Ronnie Peterson, Chris Amon, Carlos Pace, Jody Scheckter
    1980s: Didier Pironi, Gerhard Berger
    1990s: David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello
    2000s: Felipe Massa
    Formula One helmet liveries went from being seen and recognized at a great distance to being photographed up close in modern days, with a mumbo-jumbo of a graphic mess, logos, messages, and indeed they change all the time, and since (thank God) drivers heads are buried under protective structures like the halo, there is no need to see anything from a distance any longer. Since the introduction of the Halo, I always thought they should be painted individually, so each driver could establish a livery for himself, this way the audience would get a bit of the taste from the past.
    And on a trivial note regarding two famous helmets by Brazilian drivers: Nelson Piquet was an enthusiastic tennis player early in his racing career, and he designed his helmet with a tennis ball in mind. And Senna asked a famous helmet painter from São Paulo, called Sid Mosca, to create the livery for his helmet, so, contrary to Piquet, Senna had nothing to do with how his helmet's livery was designed.

    @Simbato_Amazaki 24 дня назад

    Some curious facts about the helmets of the Brazilian drivers mentioned in this video ( Emerson, Piquet and Senna) is that they were designed by the same designer - a Brazilian guy called Sid Mosca.
    Sid Mosca was an artist acclaimed in national and international motorsport for his quality in creating and painting the helmets of drivers such as Rubens Barrichello, Christian Fittipaldi, Maurício Gugelmin and Roberto Pupo Moreno.
    His workshop became so popular that in the 1990s foreign drivers (such as Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher, among others) began commissioning his work.
    As well as painting helmets, Sid also left his mark on Formula 1 cars such as Jordan, Brabham Copersucar-Fittipaldi and Lotus. His work at Lotus was acclaimed by Colin Chapmann because he painted Mario Andretti's car in just 12 hours, on the eve of the 1977 Brazilian Grand Prix, after a fire.
    In 1999, Bernie Ecclestone, the head of Formula 1, invited Sid Mosca on a special mission: to paint a unique series of 50 cars to honor drivers and people connected to the world of formula 1.

    Both 2019 Renault drivers' helmets were arguably some of the best to ever grace an F1 grid.
    Nico's is both simple in colours, and bold in design. Instantly recognisable as his own.
    Then Dan's helmet; What needs to be said? It is unique like almost no other helmet has ever been. Colours that are almost unheard of in racing circles. A statement and a standpoint emblazoned on its side. It is an art peice more than a helmet livery.
    And despite your cries foul of drivers helmets being flashy and littered with sponsors, these two were almost entirely devoid of logos.
    You show those helmets to ANY casual F1 viewer and they'll know who's face is behind the visor, and that should mean something.

    Graphics, colour and designs are something that drew me to motorsport as a kid and is likely what drew me to graphic design as a career. I even worked at a place that designed custom decal kits/graphics for MX bikes in part of my career. I still love seeing new designs, liveries on racing cars. It is part of what makes motorsport great.
    Australian V8 Supercars do an annual "retro round" where for one race of the year they can re-create an iconic car livery for their cars as a once off livery but incorporate their current sponsors into that iconic design. Teams wear retro outfits/helmets/racewear and it creates awesome exposure for the team sponsors. I'd love to see something like this for Formula 1 (perhaps at one of the more historic circuits) once a year.

    70's - Lauda. Such a simple design, but the sheer overabundance of red and that small, centered, stark white/black logo of what could appear to be two crossed hammers was pretty intimidating. Of course, that decal was actually something far less terrifying, but if you didn't know what it represented and you only saw it attached to that helmet that was quickly approaching in your rear-view mirror, you might've taken it upon yourself to just go ahead and get out of the way. I'm not even necessarily a fan of that type of design (or lack thereof) but damn, did it ever work.

    Helmets are a way of identifying a driver when in the car. Why don't modern F1 drivers understand that? Changing helmets every race - they mean nothing now. The Icons of the sport are unmistakable - Andretti, Fittipaldi, Stewart, Hunt, Hill (Graham & Damon), Gilles Villeneuve, Pironi, Prost, Mansell, Senna, Coulthard, Jacques VIlleneuve, Frentzen, Schumacher, and the list goes on - there was never any doubt who you were watching driving the car. Modern drivers have lost the plot.

    Modern helmets won't have the historic value of the older decades firstly due to the amount of changes as discussed but also because they need to be identifiable in a split second from the grandstands. I will go with Keke Rosbergs later designs with the block blue and yellow on white.
