Welcome to the show. Today we’re looking at a handful of highly capable reverb units that go far, far beyond the sounds and textures of a simple spring.
Indeed it wasn’t that long ago when it would be pretty unusual to see a reverb pedal at a guitar player’s feet. Today they’re relatively commonplace, but if you need a bit of guidance and inspiration on how to get in the verb game, this show is for you!
Yes, we spend a disproportionate amount of time on the Poly Verbs. More on the Mercury X would have been good. Maybe when Dan has had chance to explore it more we could follow up.

I remember when the ehx holy grail was the only real option I could buy locally for a reverb pedal when I was first trying to find a reverb pedal. Amazing how far we’ve come since then.
People still use the holy grail. It held up

You guys should check out the ALABS Cetus reverb. It's a great reverb for only around $120 (I've heard good things about their others as well, but I haven't tried them). It has 2 really cool unique reverb sounds. One literally adds the sound of ocean waves to the reverb trails and it's so cool! As soon as I heard it, I thought of Mick's reverb IR experiments with unique stuff like his acoustic resonating or dog barking etc. Gives me ideas for other interesting "sound effects" that could be part of a reverb IR.
I dont know why the night sky doesn’t get more love, to me just the wet mix and dry mix knobs make it one of the easiest reverbs to dial in

The Big Sky sounds even more spectacular than the first time I heard it many years ago.
I owned a BigSky for 9 years and recently upgraded to the MercuryX. It’s a totally different level. MercuryX is so inspiring and magical. Could not recommend it enough. Well worth the steep price
Do you use analog dry through? How do you deal with lack of spillover if you do?

I'm a serious reverb and delay junky. That Poly Verb is the most exciting reverb thing I've seen in a long while. I'll end up getting one. Thanks guys, for breaking down the creation of algorithms into that pedal. The idea of that capability is quite limitless in the sounds you can invent or capture. My imagination runs on stuff like that.
Holy moly! This is my favorite TPS "pedal" episode in a lonnnnnnng(woof) time. Such beautiful sounds, and so much comedy. This is really what sets you guys apart - the joy of discovery and sharing with 386K of us. I can't say enough about how wonderful and fun this was. Also, I have gear lust again. The choral reverb setting is alllllll over my music. It’s amazing. The walrus audio slo is sick too

I really appreciate you two including that Oceans pedal. I've been looking for a bit of justification for my reverb choices... I bought my Oceans 11 years ago (for the shimmer) as an addition to the spring reverb in my amp. I've since bought a Neunaber Wet, and a Slotva, and the oceans box always comes back to the board. EHX managed to cram a really natural sound into a very affordable device. Thanks for absolving my guilt!

I spent years buying chorus, flanger, phaser and a ton of other pedals when the whole time all I needed was a Strymon Flint. I'll never get rid of that thing. Love Reverb!!!
They're great. I notice you see them on so many pro pedal boards. Maybe more so that the Big Sky. It's not just the Flint pedal, thought it's a great one. It's combination of a great reverb, and a tremelo. It's why people love the Fender Deluxe Reverb. It's reverb and 'vibrato' circuit are maybe the best thing about that amp. Mercury X is my favourite pedal these days. Would love if UA woulda add tremelo algorithm to the Del-Verb, that can be switched in instead of a delay, with some kind of magic foot tap/button press sequence. Because it's my favourit Spring algorithm, and the plate is great too.
I find myself using the Harmonic Trem on the Flint all the time
Similarly it was amps, overdrives and fuzzes for me but then I had a realisation that it was delay, reverb and then the pedals like Keeley’s 30ms that truly make a difference in bridging the gap between amp in the room versus recorded sounds. Pedals that are akin to studio pixie dust
@@ribbonsofeuphoria5744It depends on the guitar, but for spikey single coil guitars, especially Telecasters, I find an always-on compressor pretty essential too.
Plus it has the 80s verb. For spring I’ll always prefer a real fender but the variety of tremelo plus the 80s verb and a solid digital spring it hard to replace

Thanks guys, this week I joined ye in wet/dry/wet heaven. Got a Marshall Studio ST20 to use as dry amp. To pair with VOX AC L/R wet amps, that I used in stereo before. Love my Mercury X. But I still love my Del-Verb too. It has my favourite stereo spring algorithm. It's hall and plate is great too. So I've switched the Mercury X over the sends of my mixer to use with my synthesizers (Prophet, Moog, Peak, GR-1, Digitone), instead of the guitar. Because Del-verb mostly did a great job for guitar. And I can use Mercury X with more sources, and in mixing, if it's on the mixer stereo sends/returns. It's almost too powerful to dedicate to just one source - it's my main studio reverb now. Yip, Mick just said same about his CXM, that computes. And yeah, like Eventide ... but better in some ways, and cheaper.

I really don't need massive programibility, but it's really cool to see that effects are still evolving in terms of both the creative and interface capacity.
I fell in love with the sound of the Mercury 7 when I heard you guys demo it, also OBNE's Black Fountain some years ago.
Sometimes a thing just grabs your attention.
I'm still working on making use of those noises, that's a journey that will last years, so money very well spent.

Love the Crimson at the top 😅!!! Seductive. Massive presence and character without getting in the way. The most organic way to turn the guitar into a synth like sound.

This has to be one of the best TPS episodes, ever! I love your IRs, Mick! Laughed myself to tears more than once! Also, the ideo to use the guitar body as a room is genius. Would be interesting to tune that guitar to an open chord, use that as the key center of a song and see how the reverb fits into the song.
Seeing Mick doing all that new fangled computery jazz like a pro does my DSP (I mean heart) good. I can’t wait to see a Jet Revelation reverb on this show. Super powerful, small package. Love the poly verb.

I don’t see Ventris make the big time shows too often.
Mick’s comment about needs (features) says it all. For most rock/blues. It seems like the Flint (not even the blue sky) covers the bases. I also agree with his comment that reverb is spaces.

The poly stuff was brilliant
I love Verb. My collection has a lot of the industry selections. Cloud, Realizer, Tre-Verb, Spash, HOF, Topanga, even made a couple. But the one that truly surprised me was the Mooer R-7 imho best budget reverb on the market.
That Poly Verbs is amazing - seriously considering my life choices now...

Lately I have thing for stereo reverbs (unlike stereo delay), so Im looking forward to enjoy this episode.

Thank you so much for all the work put in this. The most unique feature of any pedal was shown for the first time in this episode, and that’s when the Poly became an archive of stories. Imagine when you’re on a stage and you recall the preset of your private kitchen or a murder barn or the room of your child. It will affect your brain and your playing I guess. Also, collector of reverbs seems such an Alan Lomax experience. Anyways, thanks again. I loved watching this.
I've bounced around a lot of reverb options, from the Old Blood Noise Procession to the EHX Oceans 12, Strymon Big Sky, Walrus Audio Mako R1, but nothing beats the simplicity and amazing options of the RV-200. It just works, presets are easy to build, set, and recall, and it does everything extremely well.

This was the BEST!!! Totally raising my hand to be amongst the ones "desperate to hear it". Reminded me of growing up on the farm and experimenting with all manner of blowing things up, welding them together, creating canon. How incredibly cool was the Poly Verbs journey! Long may the Shit Store ride!! Dan totally adapted his playing to the Murder Barn. I can definitely see going back to the Shit Store and recording Mark II. Ever drop stones down a deep well? Ours was pumping at 1,200 feet... Amazing episode.

I recently spent 3hrs in a rehearsal studio programming my Neunaber Illumine through the Boss ES8 and there is no way I ever, in a million years, would have gone close to that territory without you guys. Sorry I'm not using GigRig but I will soon invest in the Three2One. You're legends and we love you.

It's insane to thinking about the first reverb show has grown to the IR capture! So cool!
I love my reverb I've got but a friend made it me during covid and I'm quite sentimental towards it and don't want it to ever die
My favorite natural reverb I have stubbled across was the "high end" acoustic room of the Guitar Center at the South Center Mall in Tukwila, Washington, because every time you hit G, A, D, or E the 30 instruments on the wall would all resonate along with you and ring out in a kind of "swell" reverb. It was amazing.
With the Boss 200 series, you can enter the configuration mode and increase the number of available presets via the front face button. By default it is set to 4+manual but you can increase that. The DD-200 I have I keep at 8+man available via the memory footswitch
Mick, you have out done yourself with the homework on this vid. Brilliant! Capturing the IRs was fascinating. I thought the Kitchen IR (balloon trigger) was particularly good. The reverb of your handclap at the shitstore was crazy! Nice work. Of course, Dan’s ambient deep dives are always great to hear. And Rosie…what a pooch!

Just got to the RV200 part. I have the OD200 and I'll vouch for the good mix of "top panel" utility and under the hood flexibility. Nice to see this range of pedal getting some love.
If the Poly had real sliders and buttons instead of the touch screen controls, that’s the one I would get. But since it doesn’t, I’d go with the Boss reverb.
That's a good discussion. I've never cared for features that much in a pedal. Always preferred pedals that do a single thing very well over pedals that just do a lot of things, because I know i will only be using one sound anyway. I've even build multiple pedals that only have a single knob (which actually is more work, to make it work well).

The EHX Holy Grail was my first reverb pedal, which I happily traded for a Thorpy Muffroom cloud. That little one is great though, with that pre-delay knob! I always prefer a longer one, so your initial note is clearer. Boss did a great Fender spring pedal that is discontinued, but I expect you can get that sound in the REV 200. The Poly is amazing.

Great episode Lads. There’s no question… each of these digital reverbs have their own sound. I have the Strymon Trifecta and love all three. The only thing I’d do differently is possibly go with the Boss MD-500 as I think the Boss modulation sounds are bit closer to an analogue vibe. On my small practice/fly board I have some drives connected to a Quartermaster going into a Line 6 HX Effects and while this setup works, I find when I play through it I miss the sound of my big Schmidt Array G3 based board. There’s no question that this is a golden age of effects and there’s an option for everyone.
Well a bit of a different topic guys but i was watching a pedal pawn Texan twang video when I hit on an idea. I generally use a couple of drive pedals into a clean amp a ds1 and boost it with a tube screamer or a blues driver. The Texan twang to me seems like a kind of treble boost. having used and loved the boss pedals for years I know the tone control can be really sharp past 9 o'clock on the blues driver. So I thought I try to use the blues drive as a kind of treble boost into the Ds1, I put the level past half way the tone nearly all the way round to three o'clock and a bit of drive about 9 o'clock, well massive smile on face it sure does give you this massive clean driven tone aka Stevie Ray. Job done guys worth a try.

I watched this and was moved to buy some merch.....it turned up 2 days later - it was an amazing unboxing experience ...it was like getting a new iPhone - whoever packs your merch deserve a raise!! I want to buy more just to unbox it! and I love the pedals on here reverb is my favourite!

It really doesn’t matter if my reverb pedal has a tone control Mick I absolutely cannot “be really bright or really not bright”… I’m afraid I only have one “brightness” setting! 🤔😖😜
