How fragile is information and the importance of preservation. Masterpieces like these were almost lost to history, and what a sad situation that would be. Imagine a world without Vivaldi's music!
I am in love with vivaldi recently without a basic background and understanding of Western music and instuments. Vivaldi touches my heart in a very strange way and The Four Seasons was and is my first and common companion. You have made me appreciate more of Vivaldi whom we hardly know about his life comparing with other great musicians or composers. The more one listens to his other pieces one realizes that he composed other pieces of music which are greater than this famous Four Seasons. I hope you could creat other programs which open more of the world of Vivaldi in such pieces. You really have created a very special program, and thank you very much.
fantastic! Normally documentaries age quite poorly, but this is gold. Once again the BBC proved to be THE best channel out there and as a german (very similar system, terrible TV) I'm very jealous!
Thank you so much for posting this video! As an old fan of Vivaldi, this video still surprises me a lot. It's so great to hear the insightful remarks by Hazelwood, and to see the places related to Vivaldi. The musicians also play passionately.
thank u so much it was full of interesting infos .. the guy also show full respect to the mighty vivaldi but he put the lights on the four seasons .. guys check for the ( la Stravganza ) made by vivaldi as well .. it's so inspiring .. will take u to new dimantion I was shocked that it was made on the 1700s that's so crazy !!!!!!
You will notice at the very beginning of the BBC Documentary when the man steps into the elevator suddenly the elevator drops at the same moment to the scene at the grocer store drops a box of cereal into the shopping cart. I thought to point to this movement .
Thank you so much for posting this.I saw the actual programme on BBC1 the day it was broadcast and fell in love with it. I hoped that one day I would be able to buy a recording or see a repeat broadcast, but it never happened. It wasn't subtitled, as this is, but no matter I can enjoy it as it is. It was advertised as - Vivaldi Unmasked (BBC1) - Vivaldi Unmasked traces the story of this incredible composer and musician and includes performances by the Music Of Venice Group and the Red Megaphones. If you do happen to find a recording please let me know. Thanks again, Dave
This video was broadcast on Greek television. Today the fascist Greek government has closed this channel. If I have some information, I will publish it on my channel. Thank you.
+ARv2 You are talking rubbish. This channel is the channel of the Greek parliament. It is alive and well. When it does not broadcast debates it often broadcasts documentaries about the arts. You are right to be concerned with the present Greek government of Syriza however. They are seeking, like all good communists, to control free speech and have just legislated that new television licenses will be determined by the Government not the regulator, and that these will be limited to four channels, as such are chosen by the government. They have also suggested that the radio and the internet need to be controlled by the government. Totalitarian loonies, the last communists in Europe. That said, a great documentary. Hazlewood as always is very good in providing context for the music and the performance is exceptional, as one would expect from these string players who are well known in the English (and Scottish) musical scene.
no sad at all, this documentary is interesting and charming I would suggest to anyone in the world to go to Venice and visit a tiny amazingly beautiful ex-church which is now a "free museum" about the life of Vivaldi.
Thank you "Alberto Gentili"! Interesting about the Masks, I doubt the girls were as bad as they depict here, as they were showing older women, the girls would have been younger, yes they were probably flawed but still youthful. And also, I am not surprised Vivaldi may have been a control freak, just listen to his work, it's intense, written by someone with intensity. Interesting documentary, thank you for posting.
27:23 isn't that the group "Vivaldi's Women" playing in the Pieta with the Guest Violin Soloist? And are they using Period Instruments or Modern Instruments?
I don't agree with any of the unrequested and totally whimsical comparisons between Vivaldi's life and the passage from "Le quattro stagioni". That is NOT the way a learned person should educate uneducated people.
The soloist is fantastic but the director has zero understanding of religiosity, the feelings of people in a church and the context of Vivaldi's music. He is clueless.

the best documentary I've ever seen, so far.

by far, the most under rated of all the "big" composers... should rank in the top 3 on all lists... but rarely does.
I strongly agree! You expressed it perfectly!
What an extraordinary talent!!! I love his music.
the woman solo violinist is incredible. wow what talent. thanks for posting this excellent video.

Vivaldi: “Perfectly placed notes pleasing to the ear.”
I am loving all these documentaries! Fascinating to get a better perspective on some of these composers.

The Four Seasons is Vivaldi's most well known, but he wrote so many more magnificent pieces such as his music for recorder.

It's a masterpiece, this programme
Very interesting insights into a very familiar piece.
What a nice documentary! I wish they could have used period instruments though.

nice doc...although the interpretation of the four season is almost bizarrely over-the-top

Big difference between "refused" vs "couldn't"
Why was it forgotten for 200 years?
to me the hunt sounds celebratory
Typical sad documentary about a famous composer.
I don't know one that isn't.
+FriendlyCroock really.. Lady Gaga. she is played at the Super Bowl
Lets stick with the music eh............
