    SD cards don't seem too terrible! How has been your experience with the micro sd card on the Steam Deck?

    • @revmaillet
      @revmaillet Год назад +6

      I haven't had a problem. I have an evo 512. As long as you make sure its and A2 U3 then the speeds should be perfect. Also, set your downloads to be limited to your max router speed. I have mine set to 300000 so it goes as fast as my internet.
      -edit-
      The A does matter... its the performance of the card... A1 has a minimum random read of 1500 IOPS and a minimum random write of 500 IOPS while A2 has a minimum random read of 4000 IOPS and a minimum random write of 2000 IOPS. and trust me I can feel the difference in the a1 and the a2.

      @@revmaillet Agree for the most part. The A number most likely doesn't matter to the average person IMO. For the steam deck, I think the U number is the more important number. Just my thoughts is all. Thank you for watching and I appreciate your input!

    Thanks for the video. I was finally able to get a Steam Deck on sale during Steam's Summer Sale. I got the 64 GB version for 10% off and around the same time, I was able to get a 1 TB San Disk Extreme Micro SD card from the Amazon Prime sale for under $100 shipped. Incredible values all the way around. The only downside for me of the Micro SD card is that a portion of the game is still saved on the internal memory of the Steam Deck. Even with a couple of big games I have downloaded onto my Steam Deck, I did not run out of space on my Micro SD card but I started to run out of space on my internal memory. Later down the road, I will upgrade to a larger SSD. Again, thanks for the video.

      @malcolmar 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@JTheraos I was thinking about a quick and easy way to expand my memory right when I got my Deck because I have a ton of games on Steam. Prices have changed very quickly in the Micro SD space especially with the release of the new 1.5 TB micro SD Card. I originally bought the faster San Disk Extreme 1 TB card for my Steam Deck and love it. You pay a little more for the ease of use but since then I also bought a 1 TB NVMe SSD. It was actually cheaper than my micro SD card but I did have to take my system apart and reinstall the OS to use it but having close 2 TB of gaming on the go is great. By far, the Steam Deck is one of the most consumer friendly portables out there. Now I am hoping I can get that beautiful new OLED screen for my Deck and install it myself.

      @@milescarter7803 both WD models have a MUCH higher power draw than the Lite-On. While it's not USUALLY a problem, people have reported issues when the deck wakes as well as during large load operations. Nobody has nailed down whether or not the additional power draw is the definitive source of the issue, but the 2.5a WD drives are a common factor among all those reporting the same issue.
      The Kingston drives Valve sources are 3.3v/1.0a
      The Lite-On is 3.3v/1.1a
      The WDs are both 3.3v/2.5a
      The WDs can pull DOUBLE the power of the stock drives and this is one of the primary reasons Valve warned against upgrading your SSD yourself.

  • @surrealchemist
    @surrealchemist Год назад +4

    The Deck only supports UHS-I. It would be nice in a couple years when they release a new version of the hardware they support UHS-II or UHS-III, it would give more options for faster cards. You can still use them in the Deck but you won’t get the full speed. I don’t think UHS-I cards do actual V90, it will fall back to UHS-I speed. Those ratings are for video use, and the way it writes/reads and size of files is probably different anyway.

    • @pistolpete_nap
      @pistolpete_nap  Год назад +2

      Yes, you’re exactly right! This is why I addressed that in the video. If you buy a super fast micro sd, it most likely won’t take advantage of those speeds because of UHS-I.

    • @pistolpete_nap
      @pistolpete_nap  7 месяцев назад

      I don't believe you'll get the max speeds of the card. Steam Deck only supports UHS-1 SD cards, which means it is limited to 100MB/S read speed. Therefore, the SD card you select doesn't need to run faster than 100MB/S.

      That isn't necessarily true. If you are playing these games on a break at work (which is a good use for a Steam Deck anyway) then every second matters. The faster, the better, because that means more game time.
      More space means more games to choose from. I see both as necessary for a better experience with the Steam Deck.
