    I have seen sentences such as: 你吃过早饭吗?
    I think this just means "Have you had breakfast?" and doesn't really mean "Have you ever eaten breakfast?"
    I think that with certain verbs, such as 吃 and 喝, 过 is sometimes used instead of 了 just to indicate the past.

      Yes, that's right. It's very tricky, and it's very important to expose oneself to the target language as much as possible to get a broad understanding.
