  • I performed Philip Glass's Piano Concerto No.2 during Philip Glass's visit to Lincoln for the world premiere of the Piano Quintet "Annunciation" in April of 2018. My dear friend Ron Warren is the Native flutist. Tyler White conducting the UNL Symphony Orchestra.
Piano Concerto No.2 “After Lewis and Clark” (2004)
    I. Vision 0:09
    II. Sacagawea 12:15
    III. The Land 24:14
    Paul Barnes, piano
    Ron Warren, Native American Flute
UNL Symphony Orchestra, Tyler White, conductor
Piano Concerto No.2 “After Lewis and Clark” (2004)
I commissioned Philip Glass to write his second piano concerto back in 2001. My adopted state of Nebraska was preparing for the bicentennial commemoration of the Lewis and Clark expedition and I knew that Glass would be interested in a musical treatment of this subject. The commission was funded by the Nebraska Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission, the Lied Center for Performing Arts, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. The world premiere performance was given by the Omaha Symphony under the baton of Victor Yampolsky with myself as soloist and R. Carlos Nakai on native American flute.

Since becoming a Buddhist I appreciate Philip Glass' music even more. I've always loved it musically but I think it also has a Buddhist sensibility. Glass himself practices Tibetan Buddhism.
Glass' work has a mantra-like quality to it. Listening to it is centering and focusing if you approach the repeated portions like the words of a mantra to be given your full attention.

Great concerto. The orchestra must really have been tested with such a deceptively difficult, and fast repetitive accompaniment. The Land was especially ambitious. Did you add octaves in the first movement? I loved the native American flute. That guy did a wonderful job.
