  • Let's turn today a Draculaura Monster High Doll into a beautiful Asian Princess in a gorgeous miniature handmade silk kimono. I also want to give this doll double jointed knees and this is the first time when I will make such a serious body modification. And I will also tell my final opinion on Liquitex Medium and compare it to Mr. Super Clear.

    I will be honest, on the one hand, I am happy you tried liquitex because you are always so honest when reviewing products you use (it's one of the things I love about your channel) and thus you probably saved a lot of people (including myself) the pain of actually trying another it themselves. On the other hand, I am sorry you've been through so much because of it. I understand how frustrating it is when your supplies aren't up to your standards. Lastly, I admire that you had the strength to start over. It was very brave of you! And it paid off as the end result is amazing!

      To be fair, there are lots of doll artists who prefer the liquitex/airbrush version over MSC.
      Liquitex is a dust magnet when applied too much at a time. I had this problem when I first tried it too. But you'll get a feeling of how much you need to apply, just like with MSC 😌

    SHe's so BEAUTIFUL! Lol I'm Korean and Japanese (Mostly Japanese), and I'm so happy that a diverse doll has been made! I was like- "Whaa?" At first when you chose the Chinese fabric for the Japanese Yukata (Or Kimono, which is what you called it, but they're both similar enough to me so whatevs! Kimono is more universal lol), but then I realized- "Asian Princess" and then it hit me- "Ohh I get it! Kind of like a mix of cultures! I like that!"
    I hope you make more cool dolls in the future! I'm definitely subbing!

Showing us your mistakes and frustration, give us feeling that it's not always perfect, and it don't have to be always perfect for beautiful finish. But what's more important, You're showing us Your determination and not giving up, and that determination also brings great results. As to accuracy, I can see some peoples' points - but I think any errors were definitely made innocently. I was pleased to see she wasn't done up like a stereotypical 'geisha' look, and had a more simply done face. The kimono was lovely! But since you were going more for Japanese, that should be stated. The food is adorable, and I'm glad you were able to get the knees to work! My suggestions would be to make the hair sticks a little smaller or thinner, maybe toothpick size, and make sure the kimono is folded with her left side over right, as the opposite is used in burials! The table could use some short legs maybe, and the hairstyle could be a little looser around the hairline, to cover some of the roots, and be more natural. She also wouldn't be showing her knees, but I can understand YOU showing them for all the work you put in!! Ooh, and maybe using the opposite side of the textile at the edges, to simulate an under-kimono...!
    No offense on anything, I've just learned a lot about kimono from a friend and over the years, so I hope I can help! And omg. ON THE SEALANT- I did a BJD face with I believe liquitex, or another sealant that was available in America, and I had the exact same problems - it gumming up, removing layers when I sprayed more, catching every piece of dust- I thought I must be going crazy because people said it was a good substitute, so it's helpful to know I'm not alone here lol. I will have to try MSC for the next doll I paint! My doll turned out lovely, but man, it was a painful journey. D:

      Thank you so much for this information! This is indeed something I didn't know and I'm really happy to learn it now! ❤️ Especially the information about the burial kimono style has blown my mind 👘👍 I've become smarter! 😎

    • @ChibiChidorii
      @ChibiChidorii 5 лет назад +24

      I agree with you about not making it a stereotypical "geisha" look. Her face is so pretty. But if the goal was to make her a Japanese princess then she should have a lot more layers of fabric and let her hair down or at least loosen it up. If she is just a japanese girl then she definitely needs more cute and flowery hair decorations since Japanese girls like to look fancy but also cute and playful! (Although the design of the fabric suits more a princess than a girl in a festival look).
      Also kimonos are used folded on the chest so it looks flatter, and the neck should be a bit loose so it flares out at the back and shows the nape of the neck. There's many tutorials online on how to wear and style kimono so it looks more realistic 😉 and yes she needs an under kimono!

    • @seir323
      @seir323 5 лет назад +7

      @@ChibiChidorii All very good points! Would the darker red color be more suitable for a woman than a girl, or for winter time? And yes, definitely if she's a princess in the literal sense, she'd have a lot more layers and different hair, but if you're using the 'any girl can be a princess!' philosophy, then I think this can fit that. :) She's a fancy lady either way!
      And yes! Re: under-kimono, though, I've definitely seen on dolls (from Japan) the illusion of an under-kimono created with clever trim, and the obi attached as a premade piece - since fashion dolls are so small, you don't want it to get super fiddly or bulky (not that it's impossible!) There's a lot of clever tricks out there that can make it pop and add a little authenticity.

    • @ChibiChidorii
      @ChibiChidorii 5 лет назад +12

      @@seir323 seir323 actually yes! Darker and duller colors are mostly used by older and married women, and also their sleeves are shorter. Youger girls are expected to wear pink or really bright colors and have longer sleeves, although now with how fashion works, crazy patterns are also considered youthful and very fashionable. I say she looks rather fancy and mature because the fabric is a warmer red than the classic red kimono and most importantly has a lot of gold in it (it is actually very similar to a kimono i wore in Japan for a contest lol) which makes it look like it is for a special occasion instead of just going to a summer festival or tea ceremony.

    • @completedisaster2475

      i know this is a pretty old comment, but another thing i think could be added in terms of accuracy is the chopsticks in her hair. people do it on occasion, but it’s mostly just for convenience if you need your hair out of your face- considering she’s a princess, she’d probably have some fancy hairsticks on hand and would have no reason to use chopsticks.

    She’s beautiful. I used to move a lot (I moved a whopping 10 times over 2 countries and 5 states before I was 11 years old!), so I got to see many cultures. My dad used to always bring back the greatest treasures from the places he went for missions and I’ve always treasured them. One of the reasons I love this channel is you aren’t afraid to rip apart a white doll and turn it into a black doll or a black doll into a zombie doll. You are insanely creative.
    And I deeply sympathize with the liquitex debacle! It’s like getting a new formulation of your beloved colored pencils and going, “WTF is this? What did you do to my pencils?! I DEMAND MY OLD PENCILS BACK!”

    I’ve been binge watching your videos for the last couple days and I’m usually not into videos like these but watching the effort and love you put into all your creations is so nice and comforting to watch. Not only are all of your dolls so beautiful but as a half white/ half Asian person myself, I love watching the effort you especially put into making dolls that aren’t white. While I understand the reservations some people may have about you putting an Asian doll in Asian clothing, I think it was a perfect choice because it isn’t often you see a doll that is specifically Asian in a store or specifically any race that isn’t white. I love all of your creations and appreciate the love you put into each one!

    Honestly I really liked the first face. The expression made her look so sad and desperate which was really adorable. I can see that the quality looks worse but I feel like it looks more realistic that way, she kinda looks like a porcelain doll or something because of how the sealant turned out. The second one definitely looks more brave and fierce like a true leader but the first was so freaking adorable.

    That doll is gorgeous. Absolutely a work of art. I just have one small critique, if you could call it that. If you make another doll like this, have an underskirt, it would hide the knee joints and make it look seamless. I'd love to see you make another and fashion it to look like a traditional geisha, there are some amazing videos of modern day maiko and geisha that you could draw inspiration from. All in all I really enjoyed this video and the doll is exquisite.

    It's sometimes the hardest thing, to start over on a project. I personally hate doing that, but it was needed. I say, stick with what works for you. I've seen other customizers who try a product for the first time and it becomes a hassle every step of the way.

    I like Liquitex because even outdoors with a mask, MSC (and most sprays) gives me an awful cough and debilitating migraine. I do also work mainly with paints and some pastels, so that could be why I think Liquitex is a great alternative. Honestly, any matte sealant or varnish dabbed on gently works well for me.

    Hi Poppen,
    I appreciate you going out of your way to diversify your doll portfolio. We definitely have the same problem in the United States with most of the available doll sculpts being white/Caucasian. There are even more fantasy sculpts (looking at monster high here) than sculpts representing people of color.
    That being said, I have a few thoughts I would like to share with you and the comments section at large (because there are a lot of doll customizers watching as you said). I am going to use examples from your channel here, but I am not attacking you, I just want to give actual examples rather than being vague. I’ve seen others (myself included) do the same sorts of things in their art as well.
    When you make dolls of color their main themes are almost always that they’re not white (Asian Princess, Big African Beauty, etc.), whereas when you make white dolls they can be anyone (ice queen, pirate, Little Red Riding hood, etc.). Only focusing on the race of a character or doll when they aren’t European (white isn’t a race) makes it seem standard and all non-white races are ‘weird’, ‘exotic’, or different. This simply isn’t true (also, monolid or ‘hooded’ eyes are no less normal than ‘regular’, or double lid eyes).
    Also, when a doll’s theme is their race, their character and design are more likely to be composed of stereotypes (this doll must be a princess, she kneels at a table, etc) some of which might have seeds of truth in the actual culture the doll is representing, whereas others might not (China and Japan are not the same and their textile designs are not either, and putting chopsticks in a Japanese woman’s hair is the same as if I pulled an Ariel and stuck a fork in mine.). Regardless of how a stereotype came to be or how harmless it may seem, it does hurt people because others have a harder time accepting who they are if all they see the person as is a bunch of stereotypes.
    One final point I would like to make is that doll designers, please be careful not to accidentally further a form of oppression that people in marginalized communities face in their lives. Things such as lightening a doll’s darker skin (as we said earlier, darker skinned dolls are a rarity, comparatively) or straightening a black doll’s natural hair. Whitewashing is a huge issue in western media, where lighter-skinned people of color are more accepted by white people because it seems closer to our skin tone. Black women and girls are penalized every day for not straightening their hair to more look more like ‘normal’ (white). When we change dolls in this we way, as white doll customizers, we are furthering the message that people of color are not pretty as they are, that only light-skinned and straight-haired (and skinny, but that’s another topic) people are worth recreating in our art.
    I’m writing this long-a** comment not to attack you, or any doll customizer, or anyone’s dolls but to shed some light on something that isn’t usually talked about. I have made a lot of mistakes regarding race as a writer, but I have learned from them. I am hoping that we all can learn from my hard-won experience and errors and maybe avoid repeating some of them.
    Thank you for reading all of this,
    Sarah
    PS: As a white person if any person of the races I have spoken about in this comment feels that I have crossed a line, please let me know. However, I will only defer to PoC in this matter as this is their real-life and it’s only the youtube comments section for the rest of us.

      Thank you for your comment! You are right of course! First of all the doll market should be much more diverse. Right now unfortunately I cannot hide my excitement when I'm working on some not-Clawdeen-Wolf doll with a deeper skin color and the ones with hooded eyes just don't exist approximately (a couple of stiff fashonistas, made to move fashonistas don't exist here) and it becomes a special feature of a makeover. And I always think in toy shops 'damn, it must be really frustrating if you are an Asian girl or a girl with African routes and you want to buy a pretty doll that looks like you because there's just none, all of them are blond white and a couple are white with dark hair. There are also a couple of green and purple Monster Highs and maybe Pocahontas from Hasbro but looks like she's swallowed a stick - choose dear girl of color, enjoy, which one you want to look like most 🤬🤬🤬'. So when I make these 'ethnic' repaints I have some sort of a feeling like 'come, I will make finally a doll that will look like you'. The hair of the holidays Barbie I've straightened just to make the change more drastic, I loved her hair and I told in the disclaimer because I knew there would be lots of comments but there were anyway lots of comments about it 😂 but we should for sure put an effort and change the situation. Every girl deserves a doll that looks like her! 👧👧🏻👧🏿👧🏼👧🏽👧🏾❤️

      Xial Amyrson I agree. It’s not an actual person, it’s a doll, a work of art. It’s not a historically accurate piece meant to be on display at some art history exhibit. It’s perfectly fine in this context of doll customization.

    • @Irrelevantspace
      @Irrelevantspace 5 лет назад +81

      The ‘chopsticks in the hair is like a fork in mine’ isn’t quite accurate. I understand that sticking chopsticks in your hair doesn’t make sense but what I’m sure happened here is a simple misunderstanding. People see the large hair pins Geishas use in their hair and think “look giant chopsticks!” So you have to give people some leg room when it comes to other cultures. Not everyone is highly educated in tradition from other countries and cultures, some are still learning about the rest of the world and what everything is.
