  • A 26 year old Aretha Franklin guest stars with 42 year old host Sammy Davis Jr. on The Hollywood Palace on November 2, 1968. Aretha @ 34:25
I wanted to share the full episode of this 50 year old in tribute of Ms. Frankin's transition. 1968 was Aretha's breakout year. Although she had been performing since her early teens, it was her move over to Atlantic records and the release of 1967's I Never Loved A Man LP (which included 4 number one singles, that Aretha Franklin was anointed "The Queen Of Soul"
This episode aired a few moths after the release of her 4th Atlantic LP, Aretha Now and two moths before the Soul '69 LP (all hit number one on the R&B charts).
Patterned after The Ed Sullivan Show, Hollywood Palace was a unique as a showcase for Black performers. ABC was a fledgling new network at the time and did well with shows geared to youth and black performers. Unlike Sullivan's show,, where it was considered an honor to interact with Ed Sullivan for a few winded seconds after performing, the series was built around a series of rotating hosts. Established legends like Sammy Davis Junior often utilized the opportunity to create magical moments of TV history. ABC also was the home of Shindig, Music Scene and inked a deal with Berry Gordy which would see his top acts star in a series of one hour specials, and Diana Ross guest host a Hollywood Palace that gave The Jackson Five their first national TV exposure (a month before Sullivan).

Makes me so sad to see the establishment playing races against each other so much these days when for over the last 60 years we have all admired so many dark skinned ppl on TV. From this vid to Sanford n son to the fresh prince of Belair. We all know all white ppl loved the jazz and blues the darker skinned ppl put out thru the 50 60 70s. And when hip hop started that all white kids over every black rapper how many albums did 50cent sell? Half were to white ppl I know this. People need to grow up. This race crap has degregated both sides and its a crying shame. A true crying shame. Noone has hate in the ways the internet has projected. Please educate ur children people. We are all one ppl and have been for a long time. It makes my heart ache and has been only an injustice for us all.

Excellent blast from the past! So awesome to see Sammy Davis, Jr. The song "Little Brown Boy" was perfect for its time and is, unfortunately, still relevant today. To hear the song "Every Boy Can Be President of the United States" with a multicultural cast, including a girl, seemed prophetic for the future election of Barack Obama. And, the Queen herself, Miss Aretha Franklin, was so beautiful. And that voice, The Voice, epitomized the soul of our people. Thank you, beloved Queen~

I was cringeing at the "every boy" line. The token little girl was permitted to add "and me"' but it still hasn't happened in the U.S.A. We had a great Prime Minister in Australia. Julia Gillard. She was hounded and vilified by powerful men. Apparently we weren't ready either. Go New Zealand!

    • @truthbetold4178

@@MandyRRAh ... "Every boy" didn't bother me at all. Personally, I am quite happy with strong, capable, male leadership. Perhaps we'll someday have a female President here in the States...sure glad we didn't with Hillary Clinton (although I despise Trump). Elizabeth Warren may one day be our choice... she's bright and strong, without trying to be mannish...we'll see. Glad you guys have had successful female leadership. No doubt, we're capable. ☺

@@ericmoore3791 you're being real weird in alot of these comments. No offense bro but women don't come on here too get hit on by random dudes that know nothing about them other than a tiny picture that may not even be them...all they're doing is posting commentary on videos, not trying to exchange names, emails or their personal Facebook page with you.
Frankly, I doubt you get very far with this approach and you should rethink because I notice every comment you leave like that, the woman you're speaking too stop responding to you immediately after. They seem very noticeably uncomfortable and weirded out by your comments asking them for personal information. Just like this woman above And she's not even the only one you've done this to on just THIS video- let alone, on multiple videos across RUclips. It's weird man.
Just trying to give you genuine advice in the nicest way possible yet I feel like I must be blunt about it as well so you understand. But you're probably taking it as though I'm being a prick to you and picking on you but I'm honestly just trying to give you good advice and trying to save you the embarrassment of what you're doing and how it makes you look. A dating site or a chat forum meant for that would probably serve your purpose more. I think you must be a lonely guy to do this kinda stuff so I hope you're able to find a place that's more welcoming of talking to you and you're able to make a friend.
