I can't thank you enough for this information. I purchased a low klm county 2014 Forester in immacullate condition, but bacame concerned about the number of times the DPF light was coming on. The OBD2 led me to the problem. The attempted Re Gens were double of the completd ones, and my first Re Gen using the OBD2 showed that it cut in at 66%, but cut out at 32%, showing that the DPF had a blockage that had accummulated over time. I then set about making sure that subseqent Re Gens were carried out to their full extent, and every one cut out a lower level than the 32%. Using this technique, I got it down to 18%, when I discovered a product made by Penrite called Environ+ DPF Cleaner (A Fuel addative). To date, most of my Re Gen distances were between 80 - 100 klms. On a trip, and when the fuel level went down to give me the maximum doseage concentration, I added the Penrite. The distance to the next Re Gen was 512klms and that cut in at 66% and cut out at 2%. Heaven knows what the original blockage figure was, as I had already knocked up a few long trips before hand, and the DPF light comes on way after the 66% figure, but for $55 for the OBD2, plus the software & addative it came out at under $100. I have eliminated the problem without a spanner going near the car, and any stationary diagnostic tool couldn't have shown up what the live read was showing.
Ah that's awesome to hear! And great to hear the effect of the DPF cleaner. Yeah it sounds like your DPF had a bit of a hard to clear blockage that the cleaner sorted out for you. Great advice for anyone else struggling with similar issues 👍
Thank you very much had my dpf replaced on forester 2014 by the dealer and for the next 3 wks dpf light back to flashing with engine light so booked to go back in in 3 weeks time. My car has no boost or low boost when accelerating. Few searches online and found the problem split pipe between intercooler and engine. Then I came across your video. I ordered everything I needed set it all up I managed to get SAR down to 49% just by driving took it in to the dealer the very next day to reset ECU they did a forced regen to clear everything took it home change oil and filter. After about 1005km since last regen it got to 65% and did an active regen count 1 and also resets kms running distance since last regen. Now I can monitor SAR till it gets to 64% then take it on long drive on the highway. Again thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
That's great to hear! It's been almost two years now for me with the monitoring using the OBD2 scanner and you get a really good feel for it after a while... and work out how to manage it and even how to drive to maximise the burn. I basically just make sure when it's on around 65% I take it for a longer drive. So if I am getting home and it's on 64% I'll have a think about whether my next drive will be short or long. If I'm going to do a long drive, I'll just wait till then but if I know it's only going to be a short drive, I'll just keep driving for a bit and let it do a burn... or most of a burn.
Thank you very, very much for putting in the time and effort to make such a thorough explanation about how to manage a Subaru DPF. I am still learning about mine and your RUclipss have given me a great head start. I wish I had known all this when I first got my car. I have been having a love-hate relationship with my 2011 Forester, I love it when it's working properly and then I hate it when something goes wrong (like the DPF). Since watching your RUclipss, setting up the app and learning what conditions are necessary for a DPF burn-off I am starting to feel a lot more in control of the situation. Because of that I am able to get a lot more pleasure out of my driving. Thanks again.
Thank you very much D Headly for posting this very informative video. I have a forester diesel 2016. I live in Melb. I normally drive for 30-45 mins. every 2 weeks to do a burn. I’ll now get this OBD2.
legend! thanks for sharing that. Love our diesel forester but have beentrying to figure out how to manage the DPF. This was super helpful. Thanks again.
Thanks so much for this excellent video. We have a 2015 manual turbo diesel forester which has been great apart from constant DPF issues, mainly due to shortish trips to work and despite a few annual road trips. We used too just rely on the dash fuel consumption graph to indicate a likely burn, but the combo of the OBD and Torque Plus has worked a treat to ensure complete burns and it's great to monitor real time how the process is performing. Loving that 0% soot result! Cheers.
Just an update adding to my previous post. With another Snowy trip coming up and having read that Shell, BP & Caltex all claim to have an additive in their diesel that makes it clean and protect your engine, I thought I would give it a go. (cost me an extra $3.00 to fill the tank over the no name independents), Having done cartwheels after my initial post, where I got 512klms between regens, on this trip I had only one regen 910klms , & the fuel economy over the trip, went from 6.4L per 100 klms down to 6L per 100 klms, so I actuually got an extra 4L of fuel over the 1000klms travelled, that equates roughly to $8 worth of fuel, so I'm $5 in front. The best news of all was that, for the first time since owning the car. I saw 0% Soot Accum. after the regen.
I'm trying a lot of different obd scanner on my Forester SH 2011, at the end the Foxwell FW102 with Android App CarBit did the best job for me. But good to know, there are some other options too. Thanks for sharing.
Great informative video thanks Mr Headly. Looking at cleaning my DPF and using the same monitoring method for 2013 forester. Have you trailled any fuel additives to reduce soot accumulation? Have you trialled different oils when doing your annual oil change? E.g I spoke to a knowledgeable person at repco and they mentioned low 'SAP's' oil is a must for any DPF diesel engine. (SAPS = Sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur content). Thanks again for the great content. Cheers
Cheers Davis, no I haven't experimented as such with fuel additives or different oils but I did put a diesel upper engine additive through once. I haven't had any issues for 18 months though now so haven't had reason to muck around further. All the best with your clean👍
How to add that DPF page ? Buying a Obd2 and this App not diificult , but configurating the app for DPF is not explained also not on the mentionned page
No sorry but it would be helpful as that can set the DPF light flashing even when soot accumulation is low. If anyone finds it... it would be good to share! The fix btw for the light flashing due to oil dilution is simply to follow the process for telling your car you've done an oil change.
Really useful and great video. I have a question how did you configure the Regen in Progess display with on/off status? I have got the other dials configured but cant work out the settings for that one.
How to get the on/off button: Go into Torque Pro's 'Realtime Information' screen, (the guage icon) Press and hold on the screen for a few seconds until a menu pops up near the bottom of the screen Choose 'Add display' Scroll all the way down to third from the bottom of the list of available display types Find 'On/Off display', (third from the bottom, (in mine at least)) Select that display type and proceed to 'select sensor and continue ...
Thanks for the video. I have a 2013 Diesel Outback coming up to 170000km and haven't had any problems yet. However the car does get a 200km run on the highway every two weeks. Does the DPF light come on when it does a burn. I have only seen my light come on once since I've owned it (30,000km I have done).
The light doesn't come on when it does a burn... only seems to flash when it's getting up to 85% soot accumulation or something like that and can't do a burn or has tried a few times but hasn't as yet been able to get the soot accumulation down. It can also come on (flashing) when it things the oil dilution is too high (I'll post another video on that but the fix is to tell it you've done an oil change). If it comes on solid (not flashing), it will want you to do a forced regen burn, which you'll need a more expensive OBD2 scanner to do (or a mechanic who has one).
Sorry I don't know if this is available on iphones or not but the name of the app I'm using is Torque - Engine management diagnostics and tools. The icon looks like a yellow engine light and it says OBD CHECK on it. Cheers!
One question: have you managed operation temperature of the coolant? In my case it often comes over 90 degrees and all the circuit is fine with new water pump, coolant and thermostat
Hi there, yes you can monitor coolant temperature with the TorquePro app - though to be honest, I haven't really paid much attention to mine. I'll try to remember to have a look at what sort of temperature it's reading next time I'm driving. cheers
Sorry Andy, I don't know the answer to that one. Perhaps you could try one of the other OBD2 scanning apps? But you'd want to check first whether you can put in your own PIDs. Cheers!

Very helpful. Thank you!!!!
I have a wifi OBD2 reader and torque is not showing any info.about dpf of my 2015 forester, do you know why?
Use the config of Subaru 2010 CVT/AT, works!
So very helpful, thanks. A question: do you know the pid to estimate oil dilution?

good ivideos mate, wondering hows your DPF lately, still doing alright?
Just gone one year in and it's all good so far.

Have a nice week!
if you have to constantly do regen burns is this care fit for a purpose according to law???? :(
That's what they're designed to do. Mine seems to do one every 90-100km on average.
I can not find Torque APP on my iPhone mobile. Is it only fit on Andiron system mobile?
Sorry Andy, I don't know the answer to that one. Perhaps you could try one of the other OBD2 scanning apps? But you'd want to check first whether you can put in your own PIDs. Cheers!
Can you make film to show the setting DPF PID for Subaru Forest 2017?
My car is also an Auto. Don't think this would make much difference with DPF, however I rarely get over 2500 revs
Hi Dan what app is the best for a iPhone
Sorry Mark, I'm not sure. Anyone else found a good one for iphones?
You really need the ash percentage dataas well to monitor the dpf health.
did you find a custom PID for that as well? thanks
Hola amigo muy buen video felicitaciones sabria decirme alguna manera de regeneración forzada con esta app?
No lo siento, esta aplicación no realiza una regeneración forzada.
Why not replace the DPF with a pipe? Never have to clean it!
