I am late but gold actually defeats Lance in johto games. But protagonists doesn't get title of champion in games until the older gives them their post.

Gold can have Ho oh, Lugia or Suicune. But, as ash doesn't have legendaries, gold won't use them. Only trainers like N uses legendaries

@bill cyphur actually Ash has won in the Alola league despite the fact that Gladion had the Solar system level Silvally on his side and Gladion could stomp Trainer Red without Silvally also Ash is by far the better strategist know someone like Steven Universe(I’ve actually made a battle between him and Alola Ash obviously Steven stomped)would be more than capable of stomping Ash but Gold no not even close his precious mentor Red is way weaker than Ash the only reason people take him more seriously is just using PIS and cheap Ash memes to make him look horrible as a trainer
