THANK YOU for talking about the OK KO crossover. Sonic was an horribly narcissistic jerk in this episode, and made it seem like he never cared about Tails at all. Sonic constantly gloating about how great he is, replacing his best friend for a random kid he just met… it’s by far the worst Sonic portrayal ever and is so disrespectful to his character. This is meta era Sonic at his worst.

That's an extremely fair opinion on the Crossover. One could argue it's not meant to be taken entirely as fact and super seriously since it was a one off crossover special for an otherwise unrelated cartoon. I mean, Sonic here is caricatured and has some traits pushed to 11 mostly for comedic effect and cool action. However, I do completely understand the frustration that comes with Sonic not being portrayed as he's supposed to be, as he has been portrayed incorrectly more and more often as the Meta Era continues. To some degree, I feel the same way. I completely prefer the Heart that Sonic and his stories had during the 2000s and most recent media, including this, has essentially forgotten about that. Of course, I still loved the episode myself, but a little part of me was kinda sad they went with the Meta Era characterization. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's his Worst Portrayal, but it sure isn't the best.
    Great video.

A big issue I have with this episode is Tails’ conflict.
The show seems to believe that Tails being Sonic’s sidekick is an actual job (even though it isn’t). Tails being extremely insecure and clingy about it is extra insulting, because Tails shouldn’t care about it in the first place.
Tails is Sonic’s friend, who shares heroic attributes. In purpose, he is a sidekick, but in-lore, he is as much of a sidekick to Sonic as Bucky is to MCU Captain America during the Infinity Saga; a tag-along with his own trials who helps out a friend where it’s necessary, and not because he SHOULD.
I think it would just be nice to see an independent Tails who helps Sonic because it’s the right thing to do, and not because of an arbitrary sidekick label.

I still like the part where tails taught k.o. the spin dash. I heard that tails was the one who invented the spin dash or I believe that the sonic 2 manual states that tails came up with it. Either way the show kinda shifted tails characterization in lost world and made him start off as a jealous sidekick to a relatable/approachable mentor figure to k.o.
Sonic even compliments tails later on and he didn't end up being an egotistical jerk like in lost world. So I wouldn't say it's the worst portrayal of tails. Just solid as the show's canon.

I seriously question how writers can get Sonic’s character so very wrong! When it comes to Tails, Sonic is often the guy that praises him the most, Roger knows that well to the point where Roger’s Sonic constantly praises Tails in the Twitter Takeovers, not to mention the fact that this is supposed to be an adaptation of the same character who “doesn’t need a reason to help a friend” (sure that is an Unleashed quote but it IS still canon). If this had been Boom Sonic, then sure whatever… he’s an over exaggerated version of the more egotistical side of Sonic’s character… but they used actual Sonic in this show. Heck, even Sonic X was more accurate than that, and even gave him some attitude without being an ass. All in all, I hate how they handled Sonic in this episode.

He never even handed over any Chaos Emeralds in any of the games he was tricked in despite him getting his hands on them quite easily. Not to mention Angel Island literally falls out of the sky and starts sinking into to the ocean when the Master Emerald is removed, there is no way he would just risk that for a museum exhibit. @Kian True, once again it's certainly how someone might interpret it. Sonic when around his friends, is very kind and caring, and that's the problem with the more recent version of Sonic. They make him out like he is solely a sarcastic and arrogant individual who is only interested in inflating his ego. The fact that the newer Sonic has been known to ignore, and even downright doubt his friends at times is pretty sad. It's not too late to correct Sonic's current personality, but they need to stop investing all their chips into making Sonic overly confident, and make him go back to caring about his companions.

i disagree about the point about why sonic is arrogant during the sonic-eggman dynamic
    Mini analysis here but;
Sonic does not always know he can beat Eggman. When the going gets tough, Sonic also knows when to throw on a game face (i.e Egg Beetle and Egg Dragoon).
I feel like the real reason he’s cocky towards Eggman is because that arrogance and assuredness is how he deflects pressure, and how he alleviates the people around him. He’s a free-spirited guy who defines self-assuredness. Even when he isn’t sure if he’ll win, he tries his best and puts on a smile, because that’s what he can do.
Even against Merlina, he smiled, with his legs shaking, because that determination is all he could do, and all he believed he should do.
In tandem with the video essay, I believe that Sonic’s arrogance should be used in a way that alleviates others, and helps him directly challenge even the most terrifying odds.
I definitely agree with you, but I wanted to throw my two cents about the Sonic-Eggman dynamic, because I feel like Sonic belittling Eggman like he does in Colours is not the right way to go about it.

References like these can feel very shallow, surface-level, and basically just a way to tickle the fanbase's nostalgia bones. I'm honestly afraid sonic will become this "Remember green hill? chemical plant? spindashing? the OVA?" no matter how obscure a reference may be, doesn't distract from the fact that the actual media itself needs to be able to hold its own.

Now, for the idea of sonic not being the most fleshed out and interesting character, I mean, yeah. The show is a comedy show, so they aim to make stuff funny, and they only have a couple minutes to do so, not to mention this was a one time thing, so I’m not even upset about Sonics characterization in this episode. By the end he is really cool, and the big yawn was funny af bro.
The only part that got me thinking was “huh, why is sonic just chillin sleeping? He’s not gonna try to help him out?” But you gotta remember, KO offered to go first to save his friends, and sonic tried to explain how to do a spin dash, but he isn’t too great at explaining, giving tails room to teach KO.

Holy cow! Thank you, Sonicsta! I knew that there was something off about Sonic in this OK KO crossover episode! I knew it! XD EEP! :)
The thing here is I knew that Modern Sonic was far different compared to the Sonic from that episode yet there have been times where I would talk about how Sonic hadn't been portrayed right in the 2010's and people have said that Sonic has always been that way or that I wasn't used to his portrayal of him from back in the classic days since I became obsessed with him during his modern days. Heck I even hear this said about Sonic when it comes to Sonic Boom.
It's because of that that I get so confused on whether or not Sonic is out of character or not.
But yeah I love that OK KO crossover episode but everything that Sonicsta said in the video bugged me big time too like he would risk his life for KO before he got roboticized and he would be worried about KO's friends and love the praise that Tails gets and not make everything about himself.
It especially hugely bugged me when KO is trying to do the rescuing himself to go over that hoop to save his friends yet Sonic does absolutely nothing and sits at that chaise and drinks that drink referencing Sonic OVA but then it's Tails who helps him out and not Sonic by telling him how to use a spin dash.
While I also do love the scene where Sonic tells Tails that he is his best buddy and not KO a part of me can't help but feel like the episode didn't do well at building up to that no matter how entirely sweet I find that scene to be.
I'm so glad that it's not just me so thank you, Sonicsta! I knew Sonic was awesome! Always have always will! EEP! :)

I remember when I first watched the episode and thought it was great but saw a lot of discourse on Sonic's potrayl. While I didn't understand it at first because of my love for OK KO and the Sonic references packed in but on a second viewing it became very clear. This Sonic embodies all the bad traits of the 2010's. Soley an egotistical attention hog who disregards any feelings his friends have.

It may not be the best portrayal, but I still think it's far from the worst when we have the Fleetway Sonic who pretty much always treats Tails like a pest, or the Colours/Lost World interpretations which can't even make the exaggerated personality traits work for the sake of a joke. OK K.O. Sonic may be arrogant, but he still has his moments of showing his heart's in the right place and telling Tails he could never be replaced in the end. I think K.O.'s fanboying just stroked Sonic's ego too much to the point where he got overly self important.

As a big time Sonic fan, I was very disappointed with the way how he is portrayed as a character, because what separated him from the lore in 2000s vs 2010s is that he's a drifter with an attitude and can be temperamental when injustice take place but part of the charm that makes him likable is he always come through to put others before himself, in this version however; he's Self-absorbed and arrogant beyond reasonable doubt and would constantly put others in harms way and benefit from it.
I'm just glad the theatrical motion picture films help reiterate his development on the lime light, especially with his dynamic between Tails and Knuckles.

ngl OK KO's portrayal of Sonic seems like the writers just looked at a cutscene from one Sonic game and was like "oh, so we just have to make Sonic cocky. Ehh good enough" and just made him unbearable. He's a narcissist, he's self-centered, he's insensitive to how what he says and does hurts the people around him, but hey at least they put Sonic OVA cameos in the episode so all is well right?

For your first point where you questioned why he let K.O. go first, keep in mind this is the main villain of the show who K.O. basically fights on a daily basis and i'm pretty sure this was later on in the series where he got better at fighting while sonic had never met the guy before so maybe he just assumed K.O. would be fine. Other than that yeah he was kind of a jerk but tbf it WAS a one off crossover episode in a mostly comedic show so it makes since they wouldn't have put too much effort into his writing. The show overall is very great and i highly recommend watching the whole thing if you haven't, the characters are all really charming aside from sonic and it's really funny at times, plus the action scenes are really cool for such a simple art style.

Like Sonic being a jerk and not paying to much attention until the very last moment are also very much present in the OVA and in AoStH.
