Bent piece of rail to manage fishplates?! Worth watching the video for that alone. Great to see a big chunk of progress. You must be well pleased. 😀 Funny how things suddenly ‘happen’. Off to find your tips on double slips now. 😳

This brings me back to an accounting class I had many, many years ago. We would all get excited, and the teacher would just smile, shake his head, and say "boys, boys, the balance sheet is SUPPOSED to balance!" However, I have experienced many things since then that didn't go as they were supposed to. I liked your joy when things worked, and dismay when things didn't. Such is life. Great video.

    Hi Charlie,
Thanks for the shout out Sir! The old AR1 also caused havoc with Electronic Circuit breakers! The speed of the electronic CB's would trip quicker than the old relay could swap the polarity! Luckily , you can adjust the trip time on the NCE CB's so I had to "slow" them down to give the old AR1 time to trip! Good job on the new work and thanks again for the reference!
    CHeers Gregg.

Some years ago I had a layout in the attic of the house my wife and I lived in. However, following a divorce, not only the wife went, but the house as well. So no more layout. I've been watching you build this layout (never miss an episode) and it has (almost) served as a substitute for my own model. Thank you Charlie, for providing this railway modeller's methadone!

Hi Charlie, I'm 77 & just starting out to build my first model railway. You are an inspiration to us all old & young. I watch a lot of model railroaders to get ideas but you are the yardstick to go to. Your not afraid to make mistakes & show them on camera, who else does that? In the end like it or not it all works. We all have our own ideas on how to do things right or wrong but if we don't go far from your ideas it will work out. I am planning a two level layout in a 14' x 14' room as i've been forbidden to enter the loft on safety grounds. It will be all DCC & Peco code 100 track with electrofrog points & seep motors (cost wise) as there are 50 of them. The electrics frightened the life out of me but watching your video's & one step at a time I'm sure I can get it working. This is a big thank you for all the help you give. Long may it stay, we all need you. Regards, Robin Cook.

So glad you managed to fit a reverse loop in, Charlie. Will make a world of difference and add a lot of interest to how you can run your trains. It will take away the 'tail chaser' element for some trains, with anyone viewing the layout not knowing where the train will appear from next. It will add so much realism, you will be able to disappear down one helix, run around the reversing loop, then maybe wait in one of the roads of the fiddle yard for a period of time, before reappearing back from the direction it disappeared in the first place. Certainly a fantastic addition to the already great layout!

Your fishplate fitter is simpler than mine. I soldered a short piece of rail at about 60 degrees to the end of an old screwdriver. My other gadget is a modification to a pair of flat nosed pliers. In the centre of one jaw, I ground a slot just wider than the width of the top of the rail, and deep enough to reach the foot of the rail. The other jaw is un-touched. This gadget allows easy removal of a METAL or PLASTIC fishplate from a piece of track by locating the slotted jaw over the rail at the end of the fishplate, locating the other jaw at the end of the rail, CLOSE the jaws and the fishplate is removed without damage to fishplate OR fingers! Glad to see you are wearing your toe protectors when moving boards !! I think the sound and improved loco control with DCC is wonderful, but all these electronic boxes leave me cold. I wired some extra sidings with loco sensors, went back to it 2 weeks later after tweaking back muscles under the boards, and could not remember what I had done! Age catching up. Why can't we afford to do our hobby when young and fit? Anyway ,enough of my whinging. I think the high level return loop is favourite.

Hi Charlie. Excellent video as usual. You keep the banner of the hobby high!
If I may come with a suggestion for your numbering of your swiches.
Use three numbers for eachswitch instead: First number being the same as your board ( number them 0 to 9 instead of 1-10). Then use the following to numbers for the swiches.
So #706 would be the swich 6 on table 7.

Charlie, you have worked hard on Chadwick, and it has been well worth the time of the build to get it to run smoothly. You have accomplished a lot on the layout through all its stages of building so far. I enjoyed seeing the rolling stock making their way around in a full circuit without any real hiccups. You should therefore give yourself a big pat on the back. Being Northern Irish, just make sure the bro 'Pat' hasn't had a bigger feed of Guinness and a jumbo Ulster Fry or he will be too weighty to carry (He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, LOL).

    VERY GOOD VIDEO
I will again have to watch it a few times before it sinks in but your wiring looks a lot tidier than mine so I need to improve in that direction but thanks agian Charlie I live in Thailand and I can not just pop down to my local model railway club for advice , so your videos are invaluable to me so Thank you very much

Great to see the progress on the layout and the thrill of the blue Pullman making the run all the way round. It is encouraging that you leave the bumps in the road in such as the duplicate addresses as it helps us home modellers see that even the best make mistakes. As for the next video helix two would be my preference then you can have even more fun with the longer run. 😃

So I'm hoping some scenery round the top station is next or soon.

Gosh Charlie your wiring has improved so much over the last 18 months that I have been watching your videos. The component layout is much better and you have come a long way towards using wiring harnesses. The layout seems to be far more reliable, easier to expand and ultimately more enjoyable because of it.

Another great video Charlie. I think what I like most about your videos is the explanation of what works, what doesn't work and what you do to get around the issues. Though I run Digitrax command stations and throttles I do use Dual Frog Juicers for my reverse loops. Works well for me. I did notice something. You have about 10 -12 inches of isolated track between the turnouts and the reverse loop. With a little more wiring you and a couple more Digitrax devices you can automate throwing the the turnouts into the correct position as the train hits each of the track sections. There is a video explaining how to do that on a reverse loop from either direction. I will look for it and post it here if you want to view it. Let me know.

    • @ChadwickModelRailway
      @ChadwickModelRailway  2 года назад

You make a very interesting point about the automatic throwing of a point.
However, using train controller, I don’t think that’s appropriate. I would hate to think the point would throw if another train was coming off the helix.
      Regards Charlie
