    I really liked this album. It just came across to me that this was an album they had a lot of fun with

      Exactly, after all the struggles over the years, they'd finally learned to relax, just be themselves, have fun, & play what they liked to hear. For the first 20 years of the band, it was a machine, constantly striving for evolution, never taking a breath or stopping to look back. "Burn the past & strive for the next thing", after all that time it led to a major identity crisis & near implosion of the band. With St Anger, they had no idea where to go now, so they just poured all their raw emotion f everything they'd jut gone through into it.
      With DM, that was the first time ever that they looked back & acknowledged their roots (besides covers) After all the turmoil, they were trying to find themselves again. So they decided "Let's try to be like old Metallica again" Let's listen to what we used to, structure like we used to, etc. It was a very genuine attempt by them to get back in touch with what made them who they are, & I adore Death Magnetic, it was the first record that came out after I was a fan, & I still spin it frequently, but it was by its very nature somewhat forced & contrived: you cannot turn the clock back, no matter how hard you try.
      HWTSD is the way it is because of St Anger & DM. SA was the great reset, & with DM and the surrounding tours, you could really bear witness to them finding themselves again. After all that growth, & going back & celebrating their legacy & roots with all the 'full album anniversary' shows, songs that hadn't been played in 2o years (or ever) coming into the sets, they finally found themselves in a place to say, instead of "Let's be old Metallica", it was "You know what? We _are_ Metallica, let's just be that. Let' just make the most 'Metallica' record ever"
      The reason I love HWTSD so much is the same reason a lot of people don't: It's not pushing anything. It's relaxed, a band just having fun being themselves & rocking the fuck out. I view it as the culmination of everything else up to that point, the Modern Metallica defined. 72 is case-in-point: it's not revolutionary, it's iterative. It's by and large HWTSD-2, & by their own admission fully intended to be. When you've finally found the formula, why toss it?

    The thing is I like 8 of the 13 (delux). When I think that MOP and RTL are only 8 songs each then I've got a really good full length album when I toss the songs I don't like.

    It's a good album. The problem with people is that they just don't seem to be able to get into anything that isn't totally striking and and obvious "hit" candidate.

    Good review. I'm a Metallica fan, but I almost never listen to this record. Hardwired..., Dream No More, and Spit Out The Bone are the standout tracks for me. But there are too many songs I actively dislike, such as Atlas, Halo, and pretty much the whole second half of the album. It's just too sing-songey. Trying to become a metal version of modern Coldplay with stadium anthems that ring totally hollow to me. None of the urgency or danger of raw Metallica. I do feel 72 SEASONS was a dramatic improvement in song structure and seriousness of tone. Very few songs I actively dislike on 72S. Not a fan of Inamorata (I know it's "everyone's" favorite return-to-form track - but not mine)... it feels like Metallica's ode to Tool's 7empest as a contrived caricature of their sound. Does not feel authentic. "Hey, we gotta close the album with a proggy, epic 10-minute song that every fan will love." No.
    I'd be interested in your review of 72S.

    I enjoyed metallica in my youth. Ride the lightning, kill em all, master of puppets, but man, these last 3 albums have been trash honestly. Idk if its james's voice or kirks weak solos with lar's basic drums. They just dont have the grip they used to have 80's and 90's.
    I know, their bank accounts say otherwise.

    • @ashwyne
      @ashwyne Месяц назад +1

      Death Magnetic have some of Kirk's most complicated solos? Also James vocal range has almost doubled in the last 3 albums since he began vocal training.
