This is a game that you don't even realize how fast the time goes by. (Especially with the steam engines) Because you are so busy watching your speed and making sure your points are set that going for one place to other take a half hour
Fun fact re: the boombox, you can create custom playlists that can be purchasable as mixtapes and add internet radio stations to tune into. Consult the ingame manual from the title menu or pause menu for more info.
The whole journey from MF to HB without functioning train brakes was nail-biting. (When you connect the brake pipe, you have to open both sides. You kept the one on the locomotive closed so it couldn't actually control the brakes on the cars and that's why you were so confused about the handbrake warning light.) Derail valley is the best train game I've ever played. Once you learn to drive the steam engines and you manage to pull heavy trains without blowing it up or derailing, it's one of the best feelings I've had playing videogames.
Just wait until you unlock Hazmat and Military jobs. Just to name a few, you'll be able to haul acetylene, tanks, ammunition (warning: very sensitive, very explody), depleted nuclear fuel, and //CLASSIFIED//, the last one being a bio-hazard.
Be careful, for people of your flavour of neurodivergence, this game is a slippery slope to becoming a rail enthusiast. (speaking from personal experience)
@@callsignapollo_ Hyce is great, what might those two other games be btw? Haven't really found many that scratch quite the same itch as this one ...oh god no one tell treasure panda what a dutch drop is
@Kyuschi steam and steel and railroader. Neither are really in the same vein as DV, though railroader certaily has the same feeling of shunting around a yard you get in DV, but S&S is more... railroads online but in roblox and european. I think DV fills a really specific kind of niche that a lot of other train games dont. It has some of the best steam sim and train handling mechanics, yet it is arcadey enough to encourage a high-risk high-reward playstyle. Being built for VR makes all the controls have a great tactile feel even with mouse controls, and the constraints of the railroad are so dangerous and constantly shifting to keep your attention. I cant say there's another game that does it quite the way DV does. Railroader is much more top-down ops coordination (although you *can* run an engine like in DV theres no benefit to it, and the alignments are all really tame and realistically built) and you end up letting the AI do most of the work as you run multiple trains. S&S is all about building your own lines between industries, as realistic or as insane as you prefer, but with only slider-based UI controls. Both are also highly improved by being multiplayer, and the shenanigans involved when you have two or more casey jones-es as engineers
Most engines arent german, and are specifically post-soviet yugoslavian. The S060 and S282 are both USATC engines (S100 and S200 respectively) , the DM3 is a british engine that had been exported as a harbor engine. DE6 is a licensed domestic built version of an EMD SD series.

You might be interested in the autohotkey script that means you can just press a key to shift up and another one to shift down.
