Which of these steps do you think is the best way to read more manga? How else can you become a better manga fan?

    • @AuraKingVedant

Stepping out of your manga comfort zone definitely, I was personally not a fan of any
      1. Famous/Hyped up manga (I know this sounds stupid) and
      2. Comedy
But trying out both of those thing now have lead me to two of my Favourite mangas of all time being Chainsaw Man and Kaguya Sama
(Also started reading Akane Banashi on your recommendation {really liking it} which isn't something I would have done before )

What I think works is reading the big stuff first like one piece mha berserk etc. and then read series in whatever category you like.

This may sound counter intuitive but I got more into manga by reading the most obscure/niche things I could find. Stuff almost no one would talk about. Basically the schlock of the industry. And I love them. More so than most big publications you feel like you’re reading the authors fever dream without almost any limitations. They’re messy, raw, unfiltered….actually terrible. But so entertaining. And when you read those it makes you appreciate the manga written by the masters who can actually tell a good story. Plus those same masters who can expertly break the rules they learned to give an edge to their work like the rawest of trash.

@@ShonenOuji if you really wanna jump in the deep end, there's cult classics like 'Pumpkin Night' or a recent trash favorite of mine 'Killer Shark in Another World'. Or if you want something that's a bit more high brow but still out of the mainstream, literally any of Oshikiri Rensuke's (Hi Score Girl) other projects, his horror stuff like 'Misu Misou' or 'Sayuri'.

Still haven’t read Rave Master, I’ll hopefully get to it at some point, I love both Fairy Tail and Edens Zero, with Edens Zero being my favourite of the 2. But I hate the spines of Fairy Tail, that brown/red colour just doesn’t look nice, especially since I have them on a shelf beside One Piece which is nice and colourful, both series take up a shelf running the entire length of the wall haha.
But the spines of Edens Zero are really nice, the white spine with different colour writing on each volume, Kodansha are not very good on spine design, all the worst looking spines I have are Kodansha, the Fairy Tail, Attack on Titan regular spines are awful, the colossal editions aren’t great either. And then one of my favourite manga The Witch & the Beast have ugly spines too. But they do have my favourite spine, Bakemonogatari, well it’s published by Vertical, but it says they’re a part of Kodansha.

This conversation kinda spills into other reading materials for me. When I use to buy comics, the comics I enjoyed were Batman titles, probably because of the mystery, action aspects. The novels I enjoy are more mystery, romantic, drama, or horror type books, but I do like reading non fiction type materials as well. I enjoy learning about things. What I've tried personally in the past to read, and did not like were things like fantasy (harry Potter I couldn't read past the third book, Terry Brooks type books) I just can't get into fantasy type stories, so I save those for viewing only, like anime format or movies. So I know what in general I would like to read about. What also helps is to go to the book store and check out the section and read maybe a few pages/back covers or actually flip through the books. It has to be good for me to spend my money on, so that's the other factor.

Sailor Moon was my first manga ever. And I still own those copies and even bought the newer editions. I always recommend a shoujo before Shonen because Shonen can be intimidating for newer readers. Start simple with as few volumes then jump into a huge series

I actually hate doing it in that order, I much prefer to read the manga before watching the anime, I prefer knowing the story before seeing it brought to life on the screen. But yea for a new reader your way is definitely the way to do it.

Hey there! I really appreciate your content on how to start reading manga. However, I was expecting more of a guide on how to delve deeper into manga. Let me explain: I've read Dragon Ball, a bit of Naruto, and Death Note. I think the medium is fascinating, but now that I've started Vagabond, I feel like I'm missing something. It seems there's a layer of understanding that's eluding me. I hoped your guide would shed light on this. It might also be a matter of developing taste. Furthermore, you might have already addressed this, but exploring how to consume manga effectively would be invaluable. I'm a big fan of books, but the convenience of an e-reader is undeniable. I'm using a Kindle Paperwhite, which is fantastic, although the screen feels a bit small. An 8 or 10-inch e-reader would be ideal.
In any case, I really liked your approach to manga. Keep up the good work.

The first manga I read was Berserk, and that was because I seen a resin statue of Femto and thought it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen, I had to learn about the character so I bought the manga & I was utterly blown away, it was the most amazing thing I’d ever read. Up to that point I had only read comics from DC, Image, Dark Horse etc. I was buying over 40 comics per month, and within a year I had dropped every single comic and switched totally to manga and haven’t looked back.
But the first manga I read is still my favourite, it’s just on a completely different level to everything else, nothing compares with Berserk.
