Beginner Knitting with Marly Bird and Marly's Mom Lesson 1

- Marly Bird gives her mom a private & public knitting lesson! When you all watch, you will see, it is like looking in on a beginner knitting class...so much more than just the 'run of the mill' RUclips, down and dirty, learning video (I have those too, if that's your thing of course!). I hope you all will learn as much as she did! We had a lot of fun and a lot of people who have watched the videos have said that they had fun, too. The lessons are personable - it's almost like you're getting my one-on-one instruction on how to knit, except that you're doing it through watching Mom learn.
*Again, this is a video of Marly teaching a full CLASS to her mom. This is NOT a quick how to video. It is best to watch this series and work along with the video to learn how to knit.
Once you've watched Lesson 1, be sure to watch the 'In Between Lessons, Lesson' and then Lesson 2 so you will know how to purl, read your stitches and how to bind off your work.

Marly you taught me to knit. These videos are wonderful because it shows new knitters it is okay to struggle. Thank you for the wonderful gift of knitting and for teaching me to be patient with myself in learning. Love all you do for us.
I just have to say that I have learned a lot from you Marly. I started watching your channel with the loop-it yarn and you made it so easy. My daughter had sent me a link to a different person so show me how to learn traditional knitting and I just couldn't get the hang of it. Hi there Marly ; It's really nice to see that you are teaching your mom to knitting. I had learn to knit when I was around 5-to-7yrs.old. But as I got older in my teens I kept loosing my patience with my knitting and then I gave up on it. Until I was in my late 20's and I had children of my own and I had taught them how to do the craft of knitting as well as crocheting. I am now relearning as well as teaching my grandkids how to knit. And It brings me back to how I learn to knit. It is fun to try to remember to I learn to knit. Thank you very much.

I already know the absolute basics of knitting, but I watched the video thinking to pick up a tip or two. I did learn one thing NOT to do, but the interaction between you and your mom was worth watching it even if I had learned nothing. The two of you remind me of my mom and I before she passed. Enjoy every second you can together. Your closeness is obvious. That is not as common as we think. LOVED watching!!

I can't thank you enough for this tutorial! My mum passed away 3 months ago 😔 and we're going through her things and I came across her old knitting. She was part way through making this hideous jumper with a pattern that was in her head. Being her only son I wanted to keep something of hers that I could wear. I have no idea how to knit, but with your awesome tutorials I have learned how to tie a slip knot, cast on, knit, purl, rib and cast off. With this knowledge I plan to unravel Mum's project and turn it into a scarf and beanie. I loved watching you and your mum working together. Thank you once again.

This is an awesome tutorial! Just attended your Michael's class and for the life of me I couldn't even cast on 2.😁 I have completed 10 rows now and although it doesn't look pretty, I feel with time and a ton of practice I can knit. Thank you!

Thank you a hundred times over. I've tried and tried to learn to cast on and could never figure it out. I'm such a visual learner and no other tutorial has been able to teach me. I feel confident and excited and all the other feels. I was just about to give up so again thanks so very much.

OMG! Its was like watching myself when I first started knitting! I love this knitting series and wish I would have discovered you earlier. I have been struggling with learning to knit for about 2 years, watching videos', reading books, etc. I have finally got the knit stitch down but I have given up so many times because of dropped stitches, extra stitches and had to rip out so many times and start again. You make things so much easier to understand, can't wait to watch your pearling video as I can't seems so uncomfortable to me that I feel I must be doing something wrong. Thank you and your Mom for taking the time to teach us older learners a new skill :)

I want to learn to knit. I'm a crocheter for years. My Grandmother taught me too. I'm left handed. She was right handed. Now I wanted to play along with you guys. I hadn't any knitting needles BUT... I had wooden pencils and scrap yarn. Yeah it works, not too slippery and pencils have flat edges. That was cool. Today MLK day I'm heading off to the M store not the W store for needles. Ps It's ok to be " Marly's Mom". For many years I was "Mary's Mom", Not Ms. C or Ms. D. See Ya.

As this was my first time learning to knit, I'm impressed by your mom, this was hard! I had the same confusion about many of the same things, such as the last stitch being 'wierd' or loose, or splitting stitches, so thanks for taking the time to explain all those little things too.

Really enjoyed the time spent teaching ur mom. I use to knit when I was a young girl. So I picked up crocheting and very advanced into it. But now I chose to do something different. Very rusty I might say. But you are a great teacher. I subscribed to ur channel and hoping I can get to learning a lot with u. Hoping ur mom is with u as well. I love your mom. I just made my wife a ribbed scarf last night it was my first crochet project it came out perfect with nice straight edges and I did the tassel ends I think that is what they are called, little string ends. My mom showed me how to do a lot of stuff when I was little like sew, crochet, clean, and cook. She said she wanted to make sure I knew how to do everything because most women now a days don't and she was right my wife did not know how to do anything when I married her lol. Of course I was 19 when I got married and we have been married for over 26 years. I would post a pic but she wore the scarf tonight. I used my mom's crochet 5mm and she had a whole grey Redheart yarn that is how I found your channel. I was wanting to learn knitting also because the style looks better. Yes, I am a man but I like to do crafts. I can draw, paint, and play music also so it is just another thing to learn.

Been crocheting for 14 years this April, still kinda new to loom knitting- which is actually easier than needle knitting. I need to find short knitting needles like those, all I have are the ones as big as the afghan hooks.

Ok, I'm coming to this video way late in the game, My mom passed in 2006 and we never learned to knit together, but she did try to teach me to crochet, not a successful venture, thank goodness for my paternal grandma who had the patience of a Saint. I have learned all of my crochet stitches from Marly and Mikey from the crochet crowd as my Grandma only knew how to do the basic granny square. My have things changed. Knitting has its challenges as I don't have the best use of my left hand (I have MS so horrible dexterity in the left side of my body) so I'll probably have to stick to loom knitting (I know most people don't think of it as real knitting, but it is what I have to work with and I have made beautiful hats and scarves.) I want to pick up needles just to try again with these videos, if for no other reason than the closeness and the wonderful interaction you had with your Mom. So heartwarming. I'm crying here missing my mom so much. I am sure not to get far with the needle knitting but it is a warm heartfelt moment between Mother and Daughter that I'm seeking. Thank you, Marly and Your Mom.

These videos are so cute! Even though it took me a while to watch them because I had to wait to get some knitting needles, the post of these on the Red Heart blog came at the perfect time, the day after I'd decided I wanted to learn to knit. And they're the best learn-to-knit videos out there--this is the only one where I actually figured out how to cast on! You two are so helpful and fun to watch :)
Would you ever consider doing one of these for crochet as well? I already know how but I think it'd be fun to watch you teach your mom to crochet :)

this really helped me alot im an expert crocheter but i wanted to expand my yarn working skills by learning to knit but i was getting so confused this really helped clear some of my confusion
