- Sergiu Klainerman is Princeton University’s most vocal and articulate dissident professor. Find out what this famed mathematician, a refugee from Communist Romania, thinks about (a) how the Marxist-Leninism education of his youth compares to the woke education of today, (b) the decline of academic freedom and intellectual meritocracy at Princeton and higher ed generally, and (c) the best way to reverse this decline.
His ratings of academic freedom given Moscow 1938 is a 0 and 1 is perfect. USA in the 70s a 1 (when he first came). Bucharest under communism: 0.3 (it was a high point while he was there). Princeton now: 0.4. U Chicago now: 0.8. Difference between bucharest and princeton is that everybody knew there weren't true believers in Bucharest. It was a game people agreed to play. Many true believers at Princeton now.
Just for context: at least with respect to GR, Klainerman is what lay people think the pop science writer Stephen Hawkins is.
