    Living in Tokyo for 2 years now, the Japanese have mastered this. In fact, you should never outright disagree with anyone, agree first and then add another perspective so to say.

      Yes. As i worked as an English teacher for children in Japan, i was taught in cultural training that children will very rarely say "i don't like...something" instead they will grimace and change the subject, or point to something else they do like or want. This is most visible in women, but seems to vanish the more superior a male positions themselves in this culture.
      Overall a very socially cultivated world and I've actually adapted this mindset in my efforts to be more positive. Because if you don't focus on what you don't like, but rather on what you do like, it results in an automatic increase in positivity!
      (Not sure if my message vanished as a glitch or Charisma brought my message back by choice, but thank you if you did)

      I've absolutely found this to be the best way to deal with ANY conflict. Agree that their position is valid (even if you internally believe the opposite), then add your own position in a nonconfrontational way and you will ALWAYS get a positive reaction.

    • @margaritanoir
      @margaritanoir 7 лет назад +6

      Snowy Killjoy it doesnt work with everyone.. some just want you to agree.. I had a debate with an online friend and they outright blocked me. I think cause I asked questions trying to understand their position while saying what I know. They just said "you know nothing about this, I know better, you just trying to win this argument" The whole thing was objectively petty but it shows that some ppl can be pretty insecure and have the need to completely dominate..

    • @MsButterflysting
      @MsButterflysting 6 лет назад +1

      margaritanoir same here. Had the most obnoxious person telling me that a third person who self identified as queer, that both he & I were wrong in the terminology. She kept saying there's only gay or straight. I only knew the term for queer as two spirited, I was not trying to argue, just said those words were what I knew & that is what he called himself. Was like she was saying he doesn't know how he identifies through me.

      However, how do you mean "aspiring"? If you mean you haven't started writing yet but want to then you should perhaps start a blog to get followers or maybe go into it head on and start writing the plot outline for your first book. Maybe you can even find a job writing articles which would be ideal.
      You're not getting any younger. Turn that "aspiring writer" into "currently a writer" today! :D

    I would use this same clip to show how NOT to get people to like you. Had I been in the interviewee's place, I'd have never wanted to meet her again. Everything she said cheapened what he said, and came across as an attempt to fit in. I'd rate her charisma (going solely by this video) very low.

      All you can get on a bad video about something is bad information, if you're really interested in that information, go to look where the info is sound and clear. For instance if you want a good example of politically correct, you don't watch a Trump video. Not to throw politics into the matter, it's just the first example got into my mind.

    I think the only reason the woman's social skills seem barely acceptable is because Tom Hiddleston is walking, talking charisma. Also, it's actually a really instructive video if you look as it as a lesson in dealing with awkward small talk. Tom navigates brilliantly.

  • @donthasselthehofff
    @donthasselthehofff 9 лет назад +381

    To be honest, i don't think this interview is a good example. Contrary to what you said, she doesn't seem authentic at all to me. She is trying way too hard and i think Tom realises this himself. You can tell by how he reacts, after she completed a sentence. That "okay" in the beginning for example or that 1 second of confusion in his face followed by a "yeah... maybe" in the last scene. Her laugh also sounds very forced.
    Anyway, that's just my interpretation. I still find your vidoes to be very interesting, so keep it up and have a nice day. =)

      @Charismaoncommand  9 лет назад +30

      +Charisma on Command If you watch some of Tom's other interviews, he's very long winded and passionate about his roles and film. I think he's probably just tired of talking about the same thing over and over without really getting to add any insightful commentary. Also, I'm not sure he's the best with back and forth banter, so this may be what we're seeing here.

    Actually, this technique works very well. People just find this woman annoying because, while this is indeed a very effective method to be more likable, this woman here was trying too hard. The method alone cannot save you from the consequences of cringeworthy jokes, talking way too much and talking over someone, coming off as offensive (and by that I mean you can use that innocent little "poke at their ego" approach, but on this video, the woman wasn't very subtle in her words and it's obvious in the awkward expression on Tom's face that he was slightly uncomfortable by what she said). So truly, it's a great technique to be a likable person, it all just depends on how you use it.

    this one was definitely a miss. This girl came off more obnoxious, then anything else. From her hairstyle, and interrupting his stories with stupid jokes it just comes off as weird. It only seems like she is doing a good job because hiddleston is handling her stupid remarks with such grace. She is obviously trying to hard to impress him and her boss that she is forgetting to do what an interviewer should do, and that's ask questions and listen.

    I really learned a lot about what it is that makes people dislike me initially (basically I LOVE talking to people about things where they disagree with me, it's so much more insightful and stimulating than this small talk as described here, but I guess it would be wise to first get people to like you...)

    When I first watched this vid I agreed with the comments below, that the scene appeared awkward. I initially hated this vid because of it but it did have good points, just bad at showing them. I have now stumbled across the original vid that they clipped from. It is not anywhere near that awkward! It actually is a good example of these tips. Just somehow in the editing of this vid, the original context was lost. I suggest going to watch the full interview vid to see these in action. ruclips.net/video/6QQmO-3_uIY/видео.html

    I do not believe that he felt endeared to him at all.
    In my eyes, he came across as someone who is forced to be in the presence of a person who is painfully intense and causes one to feel somewhat uncomfortable. She is making such an effort to make the interview loud and upbeat that if he didn't smile it would come off as awkward.

    Problem, I know when people try to make me like them. I call them on it. I prefer people who are honest and simply don't care if I like them all not. And sometimes I like them and other times I don't.

    I've actually liked quite a few of your videos - but to me, in this video, he did seem a bit annoyed or irritated - kinda subtle but that's the feeling I got almost in all the four examples.

    See personally speaking i don't like when people do this. I can see them doing it and even if it's authentic to them it makes me feel like they're just trying to hard to be liked.. Although i suppose that's what you were getting into in regards to building respect with disagreement it just seems connected to me because the technique you want to employ varies from person to person and setting to setting. Also body language and conversation topics can do a hell of a lot to manage peoples perceptions of you over the long run which enables the use of techniques more broadly.... Or to put that another way you can do some "yes-and"ing without making yourself look weak with the use of body language, the monitoring of enthusiasm and the topic for conversation.
