The non stratocaster player who used this pickup was Johnny Ramone in his famous white mosrite (when the original single coil bar pickup died, he had a new guard made & a dimarzio FS-1 installed at the bridge). Was his sound from the mid 80's til the end in 96.
Top-end on 5he bridge is much warmer with the new pickup. The Guitar sounds perfect now. Like the change a lot. Does'nt hurt the ears, that Di-Marzio is a Gem.
My 92 Strat Plus has the Fender SCN pickups, while my second '91 Strat plus has the original Lace Golds in the neck and middle, and a Lace Silver in the bridge. My Classic Player 50s Strat has Bill Lawrence L280 Noiseless pickups, with the 57/62 pickups currently in storage.
Knopfler used the FS-1 pickup in the neck and sometimes the middle position. I got a Greco strat where I have a FS-1 in the neck its sounds fab I lower it as it quite powerful, but it has a great nasel quality to the tone, fat 50s in the mid and a Tonerider city Limits in the bridge !
Actually i have one in the neck and the middle with a Tonerider city limits in the bridge and they sound AMAZING ! Even the inbetween tones !@@gabrieleguidoni2867
and The Edge from U2! Interesting that at least 2 of the guys were using the 2nd position "in between" so that pickup must be a really nice compliment to the middle PU
The new set sounds a bit hotter, yet with more clarity. The dimarzio on the bridge has a nice bite to it. Good swap. ☺️ // plenty of light in the room. Great 🥰
I have fender custom shop 69s in the neck and middle and a Seymour Duncan SSL-5 in the bridge they are very versatile and sound amazing with fuzz and univibe they also ring out beautiful with chorus and delay
BTW the Fender Supersonic is a great amp. Very warm with a nice clean tone and excellent gain, very versatile and works great for single coils and humbuckers.
I'm still using my text Mex pickups. .you've gotten me interested in these 69/s....I have 62/s in my tele and I think those will stay in that one awhile longer but thanks man those sound great..
hello mike , it sounded ok to me , there so much choice when it comes to pu's , and with the years the preference will change ( as i found out over the last 40 years ) , at the moment i have fender tex mex pu's in my parts stratocaster . They do the job well if you;re into blues / classic rock sounds , i didn't want to spend to much money on my partscaster and these tex mex pu;s are the cheapest official fender pu's i could find ( and i also read many good reviews on them btw ) ,so yeah , together with the full size 250 k alpha pots and 0.047 uF orange drop cap , they give me a real vintage full sounding strat vibe . I spend about 550 - 600 euro on this parts strat , wich for me sounds just as good as all the other ( way more expensive ) strat's ( even including a custom shop one ) i haved owned in my live .
that bridge sounds great! I got fat 50s on my American Strat and I love my Neck pick up but hate my bridge pick up! I also got the True Velvets on my Player Strat cause I could not stand the stocks. Thank you for making this, this FS1 might be the way to go.
Im in the exact same situation! Love the True Velvets on my Player Strat and have the Fat 50s on my American but hate that bridge. Think FS-1 is the way to go here.
What's wrong with the Player strat stock pickups ? I thought they were ok, a little weak and noisy but all singles are :/ I think they sounded mostly like the typical fender single does ? I liked the FS-1 and the Fender noiseless Gen 4 "singles" better though and the fender Noiseless are quiet like a humbucker but still retain some of that Fender strat sound that I have always liked.
It's a good pickup. It's not hum canceling as it's not stacked but still a very fat, warm single coil. Most bridge single coils are just too shrill. I think a strong bridge single coil like this is a great alternative to humbuckers. You still retain the strat tone but not the shrillness. Yngwie used the FS-1 before switching to the HS-1, then HS-2, and finally the HS-3 which he used for years till DiMarzio designed his signature pup now known as the HS-4 since Yngwie left DiMarzio for Duncan. I always found the HS-3 a little weak and prefer the HS-2. But I like their other stacked single coils more, like the Area set. I find DiMarzio's stacked single coils more natural than Duncan's which I find very harsh.
I would describe the previous pickups as slightly dull/ muddy in comparison, with a little bit of breakup showing through. I am able to distinguish each note better due to more clarity with the new set. The new bridge is hands down much better. Brilliant playing, as always - I have to go practice now.
That FS-1 sounds fantastic. For my tastes I find a vintage single coil that is "balanced" with the neck and middle makes a bridge position sound really underwhelming. FWIW, it's also John Norum's pickup of choice for that position in a strat
BTW I have an old 1983 Squier JV 62 Strat with USA standard Strat electrics in from mid 90s tbx and all that. But recently been thinking to change them
Hey Mike I'm watching this video again because I still haven't installed the FS-1 on my Strat, it's here on my desk staring at me with lonely eyes. Anyway, I was always a Strat guy since 1988 and I had a lot of Strats, usually just USA but for the last 5 years I stopped playing my Strats completely so I sold them and I bought a Polar White Mexico Player Strat with the pau ferro fretboard and I swear (you're going to say I'm crazy) but it's the best Strat I've ever had and I can't get enough of it when my Nº1 guitar is an Ibanez AZ2204 Prestige, and it still is but the Player Strat is a close second. Cheerio. Mike.
How are you getting on with the FS-1? I have one in my favourite strat and it’s a weird thing. I think it is somewhere between and tele and maybe a P90 as you say. It’s kind lost it’s strat sparkle, but it’s very nice with a bit (or a lot) of overdrive on it. I do like it, but I think I’d like it more if it was a bit more stratty.
It's hard to tell due to the different rooms. I suspect that the old room is making the old pickups sound better than they are and the new room is making the new pickups sound worse than they are. The old room was warmer. The new room is brighter. Needs more soft furnishings, paintings and whatnot. Still sounds awesome though!
My mistake then :-) Both sound great. Pickup swaps are a funny thing. Unless swapping a naff pair for a great set (or vice versa) it's often difficult to rate them. Beter, worse or just different? Neither set is naff,.that's for sure!
Knopfler had the FS-1 (Fat Strat-1) as neck PU. So it it as a standard PU on the Vigier Excalibur Supra SSS in neck+mid while the bridge is the DP185 HalfTrack... My US made Strat had fake humbucks : it looked like a HSH: thanks to the pool-routing, I added two HS-3, one in neck, one in bridge, added to the end 80's US std 3 PUs... Had the Excalibur on lease for a week with proposal to purchase it with payment to be done how I could if I decided to keep it... 2 more weeks and I returned the Fender PUs to the original pickguard, put the Strat and the HS-3s for sales... Never regretted : actually, the Excalibur is better than ANY Strat I ever touched: I even rejected a Fender endorsement in 2007 : no CSMH was on par with my 2 Excabilurs. Yup, I mean the overexpensive "Custom Shop Master Handbuilt" ones...

David Gilmour recorded Comfortably Numb with a FS1 in his Strat.
You can certainly hear a huge difference in the bridge pick up. The fs1 has a much fuller, heavier, broader tone.

Yes I keep forgetting he had them as well
@@MikeBradleyofficial what you know my mate Russell too? 🤣🤣
@@Furtheronmusic hahaha.. don’t think so, more Gilmour 🤣
He had 3? Or just his bridge pickup?
Gilmour used fs1 in all positions I believe
I like the neck and middle, and while the bridge sounds great, it does sound slightly thinner than I expected. But I think I like it.
Yeah, I’m going to live with it for a while. Either way they all def sound better than the older set.

The Edge and Gilmour also use FS-1 Gilmour from mid 70s to around early 80s…
Sounds great all round. Has more bite and dynamics, so I think it suits your playing.
It’s great to see the blue start again and it sounds great with the new pick ups. I love the new room it’s got good acoustics.

New pickups sound fuller, more bass, dare I say punchier? A worthy upgrade indeed...
Mark K used the FS-1 in the middle position and played in switch position 2 mostly.
Ooh didn’t know it was in the middle position
It was in the neck in 1977 and moved to middle in 1978 so I read on a Knopfler forum.. Whether this info is accurate I don't know
