Finally an in-depth review! Thank you for posting this. Honestly, after seeing the screen issues, I wish I did not sell my new in box GEN 1 Centipede but because this is a must have, I’m going to have to still buy it and just be content with it. Can you please post what the actual height of this is? Again, thank you for this excellent review!
The gen 1 centipede was my first cabinet, I mainly bought it cause I liked the art and it was only $75 at Walmart. I liked it way more than I thought I would, I still have it in storage cause I don't want to sell it. It looks like the cabinet is just under 58" tall, or 4'8". Thanks for watching!
@@spooky_1up450 man…only 58”?! I was convinced it would be taller after seeing in the other Centipede Legacy review video how it appeared to be taller than the Ms Pac-Man / Galaga cab. Frustrating. Another riser that will need to be boosted up.
Yeah it does have that small booster piece so it is taller than some of the gen 1 cabs but just by a couple of inches. It seems to be pretty close to the star wars cab. I'm only 5'10" so maybe it looks bigger in the video. I'm ok with the height, except that you have to get pretty low to get it as dark as possible.

I waited for this and I’ve decided to go with the tempest legacy. It’s bad enough with the washout but having the screen nearly straight up with very little lean makes it even worse. Thanks for the review
I think I would have preferred the tempest cab too. The big advantage to this one is the leader boards but I'd take a nice screen anyday. I'm hoping a screen upgrade will make me like this one a lot more.

The monitor is complete and utter trash. If you stand any higher than 5'3, you get some of the worst washout you'll ever see. I stand 6'0"" and at normal playing distance I can't even make out the shots being fired at me during Asteroids. It is an absolute travesty, considering how much else they got right. And another quick question. What's up with having to bolt the extra 2 inch strip to the bottom of the cab. Seriously, they couldn't make the sides one piece? And the build is fine until you have to try to line up everything to fit the other side. Do your selves a favor, ditch most of the dowels on the other side and just secure with the screws. Trying to get 15 or so dowels and grooves to line up simultaneously is a serious PITA. I had 3 gen 1 machines including 12 in 1 Asteroids/Centipede, and while the technical issues regarding game play on that 12 in 1 have been resolved, the monitor is a travesty. It really is. I'm going to have to find a stool so I can play the game. And you can bet, it won't be an arcade 1up stool. I'm done with them until they fire the suits who made this decision or send us replacement monitors. They put in garbage monitors because they knew they could. Who's going to take the trouble to tear apart the machine and send it back to them? No one. And that's exactly what they are counting on. There's a reason you don't see these on display at WalMart or Gamestop. One look and people would turn away. It's that bad. Sad too. The Star Wars cab is sublime, and the Defender 40th Anniversary Partycade is amazing. THAT's how you do it gentlemen. I don't know who was asleep at the wheel for this one. But I'm more than a little miffed. My 12 in 1 died, which is why I had to order this. It feels like a downgrade, and Arcade 1up knows better. Update 8/31: I just found the link on RUclips on how to swap out the dumpster fire monitor that's included with a Dell E1715s panel. It's a plug and play replacement once you dismantle both units enough to actually access the panel. No soldering or splicing of wires required. The cable harnesses from the Arcade 1UP fit perfectly into the Dell Panel. Very easy, especially if you are patient and don't try to Hulk Smash you're way through it. Makes all the difference in the world. Cost me another $150, but now I can enjoy the game from nearly any angle. It's not quite on Par with the BOE monitor in my Partycade, but it's easily on par with my Star Wars cab. So all is right with the world now.
Yeah this one is almost unplayable while standing up. I gave up on arcade1up during the shortage when you had to buy the cabinet within a minute of it's announcement or you wouldn't get one. I've come back a little after getting the namco legacy at walmart for $100. I still don't have a light-up marquee for it but it's done so well it's hard to be mad at it...except the joystick is pretty loose. There's rumors about them releasing the star wars cab again so that should be interesting, that was like $500 or $550 brand new when it came out, I wonder if they're going to raise the price or cut corners to match that.
@@spooky_1up450 I got the original Star Wars cab and it was brilliant. I paid full boat ($500) when it came out, but for me it was well worth it (Oh the quarters I used to put in the original). It was so much better than the 1st Gen 1Up's. What's really frustrating is that the Defender 40th Anniversary Partycade is sublime. I have it mounted to the wall, and it's awesome. The controls for Defender are spot on, and the game selection is great. Gorf?!! Are you kidding me. I loved that game. Wizard of Wor, Joust, Rampage, Gauntlet. The only throw away games in that unit is Bubbles, and Klax. So Arcade 1Up is capable of providing amazing value for money. So the inclusion of a garbage monitor into what is being touted as a "Legacy" edition is absolutely unforgivable.. Thankfully the Dell swap out is easy, so with another $150 put down on the device, it's actually awesome now.
@@williamthomas6106 yeah I bought the star wars cab new too, I don't even have any nostalgia for it, i think I played it once at an arcade when I had one token left. But I liked it immediately, I admit I don't play it ad much since I got altered beast and pac man, but it's still one of my favorite cabs.
Arcade1up made a very bad decision when they went with TN monitors in the new Legacy edition cabs. All those wonderful features, and they ruined it all with gray, washed out, cheap monitors that look like something I had on a laptop back in the late 80s. Awful. I halted all pre-orders of the new Legacy cabs, and removed the currently available ones from my cart, and just went with the 2021 versions to get the better BOE screens. I only have the Centipede Legacy. Wish I didn't have that one. I had to put it on a 4 inch riser just to get the dark sweet spot a little closer to center of screen. Still not there. Hopefully those monitor contrast fix kits will become available again on Amazon. But yes, the controls are much, much better. The trackball actually lets you play it the way we did in the arcade. Same goes for the spinner. Much better job on that. Sadly, I'll have to sacrifice all that, to mod the cab with a proper monitor, and RetroPi, as soon as the cab goes out of warranty. Thanks for doing this review.
Yeah I remember crouching down when I first got the machine ti try and make it just a little darker. I'm hoping to upgrade just the monitor but leave everything else stock. The only upgrade I'd like to consider is getting tempest 2000 on there, that'd be amazing!
@@spooky_1up450 Yes, it would be great to only have to replace the monitor. Maybe RetroPi might be able to use the existing controllers, and encoder. It's been a long time, since I played Tempest 2000. Would be nice to include that on this cab.
There's some issue with so many of their cabs I've almost convinced myself they do this on purpose so they can keep reselling the same cabs with small upgrades each time but never getting it perfect 😂
@@Retro6502 yeah I remember I was very much against them cause they kept raising the prices but not improving much. Also it's true that they will eventually run out of games, and I feel like they're already getting to that point.
This is the review I have been waiting for. I also have a Pac-Man Legacy Cabinet which I really like. Thanks for the comparison between the two. The cabinet looks great but it is a real shame about the monitor. It is a no sale for me. I think I will look into getting the Tempest one as it has the older monitor.
I think if you really loves some of these games you can get past the screen, or you can replace it later. But I haven't turned this cabinet on since I did the review but I've been playing the midway cabinet every day.
Very disappointing about the screen, and it infuritiates me more because everything else is great! The control deck, the side artwork, the game selection, the marquee, and the speakers. If it weren't for the monitor this could have been one of the best Arcade1up cabs to date!
Yeah it is annoying, I will say that it looks like they prioritized dragons lair getting the good screen and I have to agree with that choice if it's true, that cab looks pretty awesome. Still they should have made the issues with the screens clear and maybe hold off until they could get the good ones again, even if that means charging more.
A1Up- "let's create a whole new Centipede cab fans always wanted" but yet they cater to most all the other games on the cab instead of the marquee game(s) lol smfh You can't make this stuff up. This cabs side panels etc. may look better than my 1st gen A1Up Centipede cab but with the vertical screen and GRS trackball I'd much rather play it on my 1st gen. Terrible choice with this cab by A1Up imo. There's a good chance I like this cab/Centipede more than most of the people that actually purchased it but I'm not buying it..ever. The people who complain but purchase it anyway have nothing to say. You people are a big part of the reason A1Up don't ever change their ways. They have that "it's good enough for them" "they'll buy it anyway" attitude because of this. Lack of competition doesn't help either. Anyway it is a very good looking cab. Enjoy.
Yeah it does feel like they kind of shot themselves in the foot on this one. I assumed the vertical games would have a software bezel or something to fill in that gap. Also there was that video that guy released where he said the monitor was not great but good enough, because of that I thought it would be fine but I was definitely disappointed. Oh well, thanks for watching.
I got one too and gotta say it is a downgrade but it's not that bad when viewing straight on. It just blows my mind that they didn't go with the correct aspect for the monitor to match the main game for the cab. I mean even the original cab A1up cab had it so why change it? Other than that great cab.

@@Retro6502 Indeed.
I have to agree that screen looks very horrible what were they thinking!!
Omg I have this coming Thursday smh
Honestly, I think if you really like the games you'll be ok with the screen. And you can always replace it later, still a bummer though.
@@spooky_1up450 I hope so I really don’t know how to do mod’s
@@Jpott69 hey back in the old days screens are black and white
Screens just looks horrible
I got one too and gotta say it is a downgrade but it's not that bad when viewing straight on. It just blows my mind that they didn't go with the correct aspect for the monitor to match the main game for the cab. I mean even the original cab A1up cab had it so why change it? Other than that great cab.
The angle does make it look worse, especially on tempest, but I still remember that feeling of disappointment the second I turned it on.
@@GamersReckoning I was positive they'd fix the aspect ratio problem cause I remember a lot of people complaining about that with the tempest cab.
@@GamersReckoning because the vast majority of games need a horizontal screen, and would look worse. so its no big deal if a few vertical games are adjusted. that's why.

@@spooky_1up450 and all those people lived with it, and never got to a point where it makes a difference.
the scaling is fine for vector games. and with the black background the vertical games are ok too.

Screens is horrible
HEY LOOK - The same games that we have in 20 other cabinets but with a Centipede cabinet. Complete waste of money.
What a boring and pointless review.
Giving some of the games a good test run [check the leaderboards]
Centipede - 693k - lost concentration on way to a million
i.ibb.co/RHjryBS/cent-Scores.jpg
Millipede - 239k - Decent game, out of practice
i.ibb.co/j6Wn0Z5/milli-scores.jpg
Gravitar - 83k - slow but brutally hard
Crystal Castles - 479k - Got to level 7-3, still need to finish it
the aspect ratio makes 0 difference in gameplay, and the screentype doesn't affect
gameplay either.
anyone complaining about them, either isn't very good, or can't concentrate on playing.

Yeah the screen issues don't affect gameplay at all, it just doesn't look as good as it should.
@@spooky_1up450 I don't notice it at all. I have a first gen Pac-man, and several partycades. Screen is pretty much the same. Maxed out centipede at 999,999 ruclips.net/video/rq-OHVcopBg/видео.html
