Sam Morril: Offensive jokes don't make you a bad person

  • A true New York comic, Sam Morril isn't just a regular performer at the famed Comedy Cellar. He's also quickly becoming a familiar face on late night TV. Here, he discusses the occupational pitfalls of dark humor.
    * Apparently This Matters is an interview series by Jarrett Bellini. The concept it simple: I have a case filled with postcards. On the back of each postcard, I write different topics. We pick these cards at random. And then we talk.

    Good interview! I think the problem with 'offensive' jokes is that some use them to promote offensive ideas, while others (like Sam) use them to make you think - and some people can't tell the difference. The joke he made about the child who was eaten by the alligator wasn't about the child, it was about people using nonsensical arguments to justify a position.
    We all have Dark Thoughts, but in my experience, there are a lot of people who don't like to admit it. When you shine a light on it, they get offended as a defense mechanism. There are plenty of legitimate things to be offended by in life, but as a general rule, comedians rate pretty low on the "Threats To Humanity" list...

    • @gOaTcrackalac88
      @gOaTcrackalac88 4 года назад +8

      That is Very well put I would add that its not the comedians job to assume what individual audience members are ok with. And because of that, there will always be people who cant tell the difference as you put it. And the comedian shouldnt have to clean up parts of THEIR act to accommodate the feelings of a few people who are uncomfortable with certain subjects. The jokes are for the audience to enjoy but ultimately its the comedians material. They write it because THEY believe its funny, not the other way around.
      As a footnote. I dont think comedians should be viewed as bad people because they attempt to make people laugh at dark subject matter at an open mic. Working a joke out is a lengthy process and there will almost always be times when a joke doesnt get the desired reaction right away. It needs to be tweaked. Most notably louis ck joked about school shooters and had to scrap it because the public heard a joke that may have not been finished.

      I don’t like the idea of offensive jokes. Because people who say I like offensive jokes like that people are offended. I have a dark sense of humour. Like I will make anything a joke. But the idea is to make someone laugh perhaps at something they would normally be outraged by. I don’t believe Sam tells offensive jokes. He tells jokes, people get offended.
      Also you are correct that some people take the jokes as validation. So it is kinda important to know your audience, I wouldn’t make *ape joke to an *apist because I’m not here to validate him/her.

  • @Zoologic21

    My god, that Cosby joke, fucking PERFECT. I truly hate people who sort themselves out by the content of performed material as if somebody's act is indicative of the type of person the performer is. Cosby is a fantastic example of how clean, safe comedy can't buy you the certainty of a good person behind the act. Just recently discovered Sam Morril, and I have to say he's one of the most direct, least full of shit and honestly still funny comedian to come out recently.

But I have been a fan of comedy since I was a teenager in the 1960s, and Sam is the coolest, most down-to-earth, thinking comedian to come along in recent years. I agree he is underrated I saw him recently do his bit he had some really good lines I would say he's a intelligent comedian. Some people are just rude and vulgar I can do that but it takes a certain type of finesse to not only deliver the lines correctly and with good timing but with some crafting.

    The woman who got mad at him for telling the joke about the kid who was killed by the alligator wrote an email to The Comedy Store. She said "Sam Morril told a joke about that alligator who murdered that child." Sam said in his act "That's a strange choice of words. Murder. It's sounds like the alligator was paid to do it. And after he went to a pay phone and said "It's done."

    There takes on LA and New York maybe relatively inaccurate. Maybe if you're a Hollywood or media person desperate for work, which I guess they are, it's true. but most of New York is not rich people, and most of LA is not actors. both cities are full of hundreds and thousands if not millions of hard-working people without egos, just putting their heads down and getting good work done. That's what I love about both cities.

    Any time people start to categorise certain words as 'off-limits'/unmentionable, the resulting confusion breeds disinformation and paranoia, irrational fear, and outright ignorance of basic fundamental information. It's why pedophilia is rampant in religious circles, it's why alcoholism and abuse continue in generational cycles, and it's why everybody ends up feeling afraid of the unknown. The way to fix it is to use precise words--sometimes uncomfortable ones--so that integrity of meaning is maintained. It's impossible to be accurate if every 4th word is a land mine, and we embarrass ourselves every time we hold forth a word and try to shame or ignore it out of existence, like the thing it represents will just 'go away' if we no longer mention it or re-label it in flowery terms.
    I didn't mean to rant, sorry--I guess I didn't realise how much this matters to me until realising that Offence Culture really is gagging the voices of my second-favourite group of people (comedians) like it did my first-favourite group of people (musicians) in the 80/90s. I'm having flashbacks of buying Motley Crue and Nirvana albums at Wal-Mart, just to discover the lyrics were censored or the little baby's weenie was edited out off the album cover. Then you had to save allowance another 2 weeks to buy another copy somewhere Tipper Gore hadn't tainted yet--Sound Shop, Camelot Music, a rich poser-friend's CD collection...
    Speak freely, and carry a big schtick! Your words will mean more and last longer :) Plus, you're excellently funny, so you should talk lots more than anchors or politicians. They're only ever funny by accident.
