TorTorTalks I’ve been an audience member at tonight shows, and the screening process to attend is the closest feeling to joining a cult I’ve ever had. Edit: the shitty way the laughs are edited in here makes it worse. It’s like they’re zooming by in a sport car.
Sound guy moves mic’ focus between the subjects mics to the audience’s mics and back again to keep the sources clear and uncluttered. It’s the UK. Hardly any non-American studios use laughtracks. Maybe he’s not doing it seemlessly and subtly enough for you without you experiencing an audio version of ‘uncanny valley’. If you’re unhappy about laughtracks, blame cheap American shows for poisoning you with them. But this isn’t one of them.
It's NOT a laugh track. There IS a live studio audience there. The laughs ARE real. The reason it sounds odd at times is because the audience microphones have a strong/fast Gate applied to them (a setting on any modern studio mixing board). This keeps the stage audio "cleaner" so the broadcast isn't awash in audience mutterings, conversations, chatter, rumblings, etc. The gate keeps the audience mics 'silenced' until a certain level of decibels it breached... then it opens quickly to essentially turn 'on' the mics... so suddenly you hear a rush of laughter. Once the laughs die down, the gate is set to a closure speed at a certain decibel level, so the gate closes. This one sounds pretty fast in places, but it depends on how fast the audience quiets down. That gate is just waiting to close... sometimes it closes like a guillotine near the beginning of this clip. As minutes go on, and the audio engineers get the feel of the laughs, they seem to relax the gate and soften it's closure (release time). So the audience noise fades out in 2 seconds, rather than 100 milliseconds.
@Ryan Cier Same here. The reason it disturbs me the most is that most laughing tracks are of people who are now deceased. You are listening to dead people laugh.
i think it's like how drummers just tend to tap/bang on things all the time. it just kinda comes out whenever. i bet he was doing funny voices/characters as a kid long before movies. ...of course, mayne that's because he's not confident being himself..? this is getting too meta for me.
He's one of a kind! I hope he keeps on holding up the mirror to expose our sometimes crazy levels of ridiculousness. Satire and caricature are some of the best tools we have for that.
Ali G is a brilliant character, he is truly trying to understand other peoples perspectives, but can't comprehend political correctness or empathy. So good.
The thing is, he’s an amazing dramatic actor. Just next level good. When he played the Jewish spy, it just haunted me. It still does! He should get an Oscar for The Trial Of The Chicago Seven.

@@clicheguevara5282 Just because the humor is simple does not mean comedic timing and placement of specific natured jokes isn't marvelously tactically inserted. That's the whole point, that's why it's genius. He doesn't do poop jokes all the time, he makes specific jokes of the specific context depending on the person and situation amazingly. His humor is extremely advanced.
Drakesden I agree 100% about why he’s funny. I just think it’s a stretch to call him a genius, that’s all. ..and tbh his self congratulatory, hypocritical, and pro censorship speech at the ADL made me go from being a 20 year fan to pretty much hating his guts. ..and listening to tons of interviews made me realize that much of his comedy isn’t social commentary or satire - it’s just hateful. But unless you understand the culture of the people who run organizations like ADL, you can’t possibly understand that - so I don’t blame anyone for missing it. Louis CK, George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Monty Python, South Park- THOSE guys are REAL comedic geniuses who do REAL social commentary. Cohen’s true brilliance is being able to take low hanging fruit and make it *appear* to be high brow. ..but it’s still just low hanging fruit. ..and the way he uses minority characters as props to paint entire cross sections of America as backwards idiots is pretty disgraceful - to both groups. He also used a lot of trickery in his movies to fool people into making themselves look terrible - like the bar scene in Borat with the “Down the Well” song. Again, my judgements of him come from being a huge fan for many years and really studying what he was doing, what his underlying sociopolitical agenda is, and most importantly - listening to him explain these things himself. ..but I think it’s actually healthy to be willing to put “idols” into their place when they prove themselves to be less than honorable. Celebrity worship is cancerous anyway. I’d rather defend principles than some guy who made me laugh a lot when I was a 20 something stoner.
Rumours are that ITV are planning on ditching the show after it's run in 2020 due to the declining viewership, especially when compared with shows like The Graham Norton Show.

Boomerang 10 it's because there are idiots and morons on both sides. Sasha does the same. The right is full of idiots, the left is full of idiots. The world is just full of idiots
The ”laughing track” is probably just the audio engineer trying to cut in and out the audience’s laughter since they probably use separate mics for the audience.
I’ve been in the audience at Jonathan Ross before and there’s a lot of chat that does get edited out so it’s maybe just a bad edit, when I was there it was really funny
I remember being at an Army training base when this movie came out to theaters and it was a small conservative town. I was one of two people laughing my ass off and it was awkward but just so edgy and funny watching the original Borat. I'm sure people walked out of the theater but my mind was blown.
He has a rare and natural charming personality. I don't know if you've seen The Spy, but he's the perfect casting for Eli Cohen, a.k.a., Kamel Amin Thaabet.
Hes clearly a genius, but I dont think hes actually much of a writer in the usual sense. Regardless of which character he plays it always becomes corny very quickly without people to bounce off. The scripted jokes are very predictable and old fashioned but the second theres a random element introduced, as in a person who isnt an actor, he becomes some kind of super hero method character actor. Just reading that back it sounds cunty of me, just jumping in to say I dont think he'd be a good writer. I do think his genius lies elsewhere much more though.
This guy understands humor. He's so good in his roles you think it's not possible for him to be normal. It's hard to not see him as the screen actor you remember him. He's that good.
It was hilarious when he came to the Philadelphia Police Academy as Ali G. They told us he was a reporter from the UK and had him ride with a couple guys. The academy staff had no idea this was just a big comedy joke. 🤣 Good times. Class #336.

@@abandoned-mines-novascotia Ah, I see you're a man of culture, as well!
@Ryan Cier Same here. The reason it disturbs me the most is that most laughing tracks are of people who are now deceased. You are listening to dead people laugh.

leonelp51 Lots of dumb people in the world 🤷🏻♂️
Drakesden I agree 100% about why he’s funny.
I have an idea: dont bleep words, instead remove the fake laugh track.
