Loved this! As an old xanadu regular, this was super nostalgic. Plank is easily one of the nicest and most welcoming people I’ve met in the scene. He’d invite me over to play with him and other top players when I was less than a year into the game, which longterm definitely contributed to me feeling at home in the scene. Keep making these!
I cant imagine people hating Jon. In the 5 or 6 years I've known him, he has been one of the most universally likable and compassionate people I have ever met. Truly an honorable man who gave everything to this community and deserves nothing but respect and admiration. Love you bro.
I'm just glad that the Plank model of venue fee + price pool fee being separate became the standard instead of the Ken/Manacloud model of venue/prize pool combined with the tos deciding what goes where. Zero challenge 3 had a $75 venue/prize pool fee, 228 people paid so $21600 was paid by players to the TOs, and with a prize pool of 4250 from singles/doubles combined, that equaled $60 venue fee per person and $15 prize pool per person, which no one knew until after the tournament, with Ken/Manacloud likely having a multiple thousand dollar profit off the event. The Plank model of a cheap venue fee led to the Pound V tragedy, but better one tragic incident like that than a system where unscrupulous TOs run roughshod over the scene.
Thanks for this video. I had no idea of this bit of Melee history because I got into the scene after the documentary. I didn't even know planking was named after him! I just thought it was a descriptor of the strategy. Thank you Plank. We owe you a lot.
As a relative latecomer to smash, it's always nice to see videos touching on smash's past. Came here right after you got done talking about PM/P+ on toph's stream and subscribed immediately
Im a little late to getting around to this. Really glad you're getting the story out. Planks always been a homie to our friend group and it was always annoying hearing people blindly hating on him
Planking was inevitable, and probably existed before Brawl in some form. Brawl META KNIGHT is infinitely worse than Plank, or any other player for that matter.
Poor guy. He is so nice in person. Didn't know he had to deal with that, or that others had to either. That's the unfortunate risk of being a sole proprietorship.
12:00 The fucking hollow knight music threw me off so hard, I thought my game had opened on its own or something, but paused the video to look and it stopped.
How can you say man stole from you when you payed 15 quid to get in and he's 900 quid in debt because of a venue raising the price. I don't get why no one had the foresight to ask questions isntead of going straight to execution
Imagine how much you gotta love a game to pay 10k out of your own pocket so that the players get fairly rewarded.
I tried but I can't imagine it lol.
This was really great man.
Thanks buddy, your docs are one of my inspirations :)
Plank's one of the most unsung heroes in Melee that deserves way better than he's gotten from the community in the past.
One of basically dozens. It’s crazy how the melee community constantly hate on the best among them
I remember this, I think most people were under the impression that he had the money and ran off with it lol.
love me some plank
great guy and fantastic community contributor. One of the GOAT TOs
The blur has said it, it must be so

Plank is the homiest of homies, super nice in person.

Plank looks like bootleg Gimr
EDIT: Excellent vid, I never thought I would respect the hell out of the guy who invented planking lol
This is a great history lesson for me. Happy to hear about Plank’s legacy. TOs are the unsung heroes.

Dude your new content style is top shelf. The info you present is stuff not especially well known and you give it to us in a really captivating way.
Thank you :)

Big agree on planking being inevitable
And Brawl MK being egregious LOL
