The reason why there aren't rappers from Boston going commercial is because we don't have the level or poverty and crime that is the backbone for the type of content consumed by those real urban people. In addition, Boston is still suffering from the affects of Mayor White's racism whereas we don't have [Black] owned venues to support an indigenous Boston [Black] music culture. This results in artist who haven't any idea of what it truly means to be a performer. It's not like Philly with Ryva Parker who created Black Lilly that brought the world Jill Scott or the Arts Garage that brought us Meek Mills. We don't have those kinds of venues and the people with the experience as well as the artist that know; or better yet, are interested in the business side of things. We use to have the largest conference called "Can We Talk 2 U" which the artist of Boston were hand held on what all they needed to do to go commercial; but, they wouldn't do it. In short, the quality sucks ass and Boston is a community where the actors want awards simply for trying even when they know they half ass did everything from the beat they produced to the clothing they wore to the show to the routine the didn't put together. Lastly, we're not a Hood city. Black folks in Boston are now as of late reaching the poverty most [Blacks] experienced in the 60's. Thus these wanna be thug rappers don't know what it means to be struggling. Their hard times is a good day to most of Americans in a financial depravity. And Cambridge, anyone from Boston knows, Cambridge is the safest 1st Class City in Massachusetts. Like what are they really gonna rap about: Getting Kicked out of Cambridge Ridge & Latin for having dirty shoe laces; not having their report card signed by their parents; getting a ticket for running a red light on their bike; or worse; pulled over for tint greater than 35% reduction. Cambridge MA is and has always been all about the academics; engineering; and, restaurants. Cambridge has the highest earning people in Massachusetts as in the biggest population of people that earn about $2m on average per a year. And those 2 trying to be a rapper and talk all Urban [Black] knowing damn well they got that from B.E.T. and Gangster Rap because they would get bounced out a classroom if they said Watchamacallit. In the famous words of MC Breed "Aint No Future In Yo Front'n" which is why rappers from Boston haven't went commercial since the group "Hear & Now"

Rappers used the area as the un-taxable bag. They didn’t want to find any artists. Joyner made the most noise. I have just seen too many artists follow the steps & get nowhere for doing it. Granted most don’t even have the right guidance in this industry. I have seen countless artists dump thousands into songs but then not have the proper network to get the song heard. I love my state but it has been a long wait for us to get any notice for our music. We also don’t have the venues for live shows & bookers out of town are looking to charge teens to perform & sell dreams aka Afton Booking.

Imo , I could be wrong but when I think of Rap it seems to have either a R&B vibe or a Gangsta vibe. I don't believe Boston or Massachusetts has achieved the level of thug reputation as other hardcore big cities or violent/ tough love as most other big cities in the U.S. Being from Boston suburbs and working/partying in some of the most badass /dangerous areas of the Massachusetts area's is actually mild compared to most other big cities I have been to over 3 decades and working as a bouncer in Massachusetts and many other cities/ states. Imo it is much safer and friendlier than almost all the others ex: Chicago, Sacramento, Kansas city, L.A. etc.

Honestly theres a bunch of dope rappers in ma but most of em either dont take it seriously or theyre just straight crab in a bucket types. Everybody wants to be the first to blow up from ma n not enough people are actually working together to create a real scene. I think it will take either a group or a record label from the area to blow up to get any real traction. Having a bunch of one hit wonders doesnt mean shit. We need a collaborative of dope artists consistently putting out good music otherwise were going nowhere. Also both are local radio stations and our music venues tend to be a little biased toward real rap. Unless ur already a big name then its hard to get booked in ma as a rapper which is an important part of growing your brand. If bostons gonna blow up it has to create a scene where people can actually make a name in boston before blowing up opposed to having to move somewhere like ny atlanta or la to get there name out there.

Here is the thing with Boston; we have a rich history of freedom and rebellion embedded into our Capitol to the point where they try everything in it's power to preserve it. Instead of asking what commercial rappers are out in Boston, why not ask who is fire in Massachusetts instead of just Boston. Springfield has some rappers that spit hard, Worcester has rappers, Framingham has rappers, Cambridge is not Boston. Even some of the small farm town with an abundance of white people have rappers. I have a cousin that raps with his white friend and they drop some nice verses and I always encourage them to keep it going because rap doesn't need to always come from the streets. Rap is not a lifestyle, it's a form of expression. Need to be able to talk about your problems no matter what. It could be either the rent being due and you came up 50 bucks short or it could be you witnessed someone you don't even know get hit by a drunk driver or it could be the abundance of friends that have passed away due to drug overdoses or shooting themselves. Rap on the radio usually talks about how much weed is smoked and how many dirty girls they banged without rubbers. Besides Joyner Lucas, why have we not yet heard anybody else from Massachusetts make it into the commercial rap industry?
