To save time and money by buying a $60 or $80 smoke machine with with built-in compressor that blows smoke into the system and you will see the smoke where the leak is. You will need a scanner that allows you to open the electronic vent solenoids so the smoke can pass into all areas of the EVAP system.
If you don't see a leak then a solenoid is not functioning because it is broken, the electrical connector may not be making a good connection, or it is clogged by foreign debris.
If you don't have an OBD2 scanner then use alligator clips and connect a 9volt battery to the proper pins of the solenoid to power it open so smoke can run through the system so you can find your EVAP leak. You may easier see the smoke by using a cheap red laser pointer.
Owning a good OBD2 scanner will save you thousands of repair dollars and hours of time as it will tell you what is wrong with your vehicle and some will tell you what parts to buy. I use an INNOVA scanner. Get one the test: SRS, ABS, and Transmissions, and can power on electrical components within the engine. Also, a good OBD2 scanner will tell you if your vehicle will pass a smog test and if there is something wrong it will tell you what is wrong.
