- What does it take to be happy? The Nordic countries seem to have it all figured out. Finland and Denmark have consistently topped the United Nations’ most prestigious index, The World Happiness Report, in all six areas of life satisfaction: income, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, trust and generosity.

Each year, a group of happiness experts from around the globe rank 156 countries based on how “happy” citizens are, and they publish their findings in the World Happiness Report. Happiness might seem like an elusive concept to quantify, but there is a science to it.
When researchers talk about “happiness,” they’re referring to “satisfaction with the way one’s life is going,” Jeff Sachs, co-creator of the World Happiness Report and a professor at Columbia University, tells CNBC Make It.
“It’s not primarily a measure of whether one laughed or smiled yesterday, but how one feels about the course of one’s life,” he says.
Since the report began in 2012, Nordic countries - which include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, plus the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Aland - consistently turn up at the top of the list. (The United States, on the other hand, typically lands somewhere around 18th or 19th place.)

How I Found Happiness In Finland | Secrets to Happiness
Don’t care what anybody thinks. True happiness.
If Americans didn’t have to worry about the costs of healthcare and college tuition, I think we would be happier.
come to canada!
@@emeraldcastle Big Lies, try to buy a house in Canada. Does the hyperfearful authoritarian response to the thing in Canada indicate "happiness" or neurosis. Self reports across different cultures unfit for comparison in studies filled with biased metrics kind of says it all about "science" today.
If americans stopped voting to print money, it would solve many things, but they want the easy answer, this is why universal suffrage was never the answer, it is the definition of rule by the irresponsible.
@@yamerojones Im a Canadian who's bought a house last year... have you tried buying a house??
@@emeraldcastle There are always some who win in any system, pretending its not a problem is a flex, showing you can afford your luxury opinions, but that lack of wisdom is arrogance that reveals a true lack of concern for consequences and is detrimental to any functional system. You see this in places like San Francisco as well where the average home is a fortune, but they talk endlessly about their concerns while keeping them far away as possible.
But what does it mean to be happy? It means different things to different people. Even someone in the poorest of countries can be happy.
The lack of this type of simplicity is the reason so many people are depressed and anxious in today's world. The more disconnected from nature and each other we become, the worse we feel. This life she shares with us can serve as a lesson, a reminder, that we don't need all the bells and whistles to live a beautiful, rich life.
Amazed how they avoid discussion of income inequality in the USA, lack of free healthcare, cost of higher education, and if this was released in Jan 2022, then not mentioning the pandemic... There is so much to discuss about this topic especially happiness and the USA.
Income inequality by itself is a useless metric. No country has free healthcare
As a dane I find it so cringy when these foreign "documentaries" seek out some hippies to explain what hygge or happiness is and then think the whole country is like that. It's not. It would also be prudent to mention when something is "free", it just means that everyone but the person using the service is being forcibly made to pay for it with taxes exceeding 50%, yet that part is never mentioned.
Happiness is doing what you want at the Time you want without violating other people's rights..
Wow, Finland sounds wonderful! Good for her! And happiness is a decision imo.
Their consumption of anti depressants is also wonderful for Big Pharma.
Magnificent person reading this… The truth is you are confident and good enough already with who you are, where you are at and what you have right now to have the success you want in life. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn that skill and go after it! I believe in you so much! Have an awesome day! 🌟- Love, Nat ❤️

Universal basic income is the way , this will allow the middle class to enjoy leisure without fear of working less and excercise creativity rather than excessive mundane daily work. And the lower class can also focus on what they enjoy without fear of survival , this will spark more happiness and more creativity and better communities.
Perhaps necessities like food, clothes, and a roof over people's heads should be free but with less quality than people who work to get money. That way it will inspire people to work instead of forcing them.

I’d be curious about Johnathan Haidt’s take on “Ikigai”
It seems to me that the key to happiness is partially cultural. If you live in a wealthy, developed country with a tiny population where the overwhelming majority of people are the same race, religion, and have the same belief systems, and share the same culture and history, it is far easier to be happy.
In other words, let’s not compare the US to Finland, it is a ridiculous comparison.
Oh, shut up
@@heymikey1981 you seem happy. Its simply true, cross cultural comparisons are absurd, people answer based on what they are expected to say based on their culture, and based on their limited experience with other cultures. Beyond that such "studies" are just researchers choosing their own biased metrics, just propaganda.
In case of Nordic system it all boils down to originally European post-war idea of a wealthfare state, something USA has always seen as not being in accordance with liberal economy. And also to high internal debt in order to cover such expenses by the country, what again in USA has always been considered as a sign of poor economic condition of the country. So in essence if USA could flip the logic of its economic paradigm and experiment with modifying the Scandic or Nordic model of a society than maybe humanity across the globe could benefit from what we can see in this documentary. Since yes, this system is highely humane, promotes stable demography and this stable demography makes such system operate smoothly. It involves high taxes, yes, but this is why and how high transfers of free public services in healthcare, education and housing are possible in Nordic countries.
@@femmeNikita27 Well, what you're ignoring - maybe not on purpose - is that ethnically diverse societies are much less likely to want to be generous with their welfare systems and have lower levels of trust within their society. Also, the most recent happiness report noted that part of what makes the Nordic exceptional in this regard is because of their ethnic homogeneity. So you're not wrong, but the hypothesis is incomplete at best. There's also other things that are omitted that makes their economic systems work. For example, they have very low corporate tax taxes, no federally or state mandated min wage, higher levels of business and investment freedom and lower business regulations. All of this contributes to a higher standard of living and greater quality of life.
@@heymikey1981 You don't have to like it for it to be true. The fact is that these societies are happier because of their commitment to make themselves ethnically and culturally homogeneous

"The reports on happiness in America are pretty alarming." Very sadly true. Scandanvians, Nordic and similar European countries aren't perfect but they have figured out a good system for having the highest quality of life for their citizens among OECD countries. Researching how move from the US to The Netherlands, Sweden or Denmark eventually.
UBI can work but I don't think it will ever be "allowed" by those in power in the US unfortunately. Took months to pass the stimulus bills. Interestingly the military budget passes with no problems or many objections....
Is the system having small countries with no minorities?
The success is in a shared culture. Nothing works in the US because if anything is for the public good then there are individuals and groups that try to exploit it as much as possible. For example there are currently lobbies that are and have been for 100 years, that want to abolish public land all together, parks, gamelands, national monuments and to mine and drill on it until its a bubbling wasteland of toxic waste.
For goodness sake, our education system teaches kids that human history and society is a battle of group dominance to gain power over other groups who look different and that men want to harm and enslave women. How are you supposed to live together let alone raise children in a loving and supportive community. Forget it.
@@SubvertTheState oh no our education system teaches history accurately - what a nightmare?!?!
There's nothing wrong with a shared culture it just automatically puts you at a disadvantage. And its definitely not where success is haha
Also, saying nothing works in the US is just remarkably incorrect
@@jsebby2284 it teaches some things accurately, every skewed version of history Ive been taught or read about has proclaimed its accuracy. Also why would a shared culture put a country at a disadvantage? It seems having a dominance war between fragmentes groups is far worse.
@@SubvertTheState I'm open to hearing what it's taught innacurately.
Maybe I misunderstood what you meant by shared culture. By shared I thought you meant one place or culture shared by people of many different ethnicities and races. Like the US

$11 for health insurance! WooooooW!
VAT in our country, as I believe, has been used incorrectly by our politicians and by the government itself.
TBH, only the middle class working citizens pay the correct taxes while the low income households no longer pay the taxes that much. Sadly, the rich DOES NOT DECLARE AND PAY their taxes fairly. Most big companies are not contributing their taxes justly. This is our reality. I hope our country is as great as Denmark and Finland.

$7200 dollars for student loans... thats a year of food at uni (and only 2 meals a day)

In the US we put a lot of things first. Mostly, we care more about extreme profits for the biggest companies and wealthiest individuals vs. happiness of the whole. Stability isn’t rewarded, and only extreme growth. The majority of Americans are on the knife’s edge, where one surprise sends them tumbling.
UBI is the same as universal credit benefits in the UK
What about the ubi experience during the pandemic.? There you have data.
I would be happy if I could work less and not give 60 percent of my take home to rent.

universal income works because human population always had a need to grow and thrive and innovate, some of us are just lacking the resources. Not giving us universal income is hugely political. We're not stupid, we're not lazy, we just don't have the cushion to take risks.
Not giving universal income is hugely common sense

Universal basic income? Won’t that cause inflation? I want to have enough money so I can retire at 40 or 45! I can quit my job and make my own schedule. Do what I want when I want. Same days do nothing, other days build homes for the homeless, some days travel to see the world and experience the different cultures.
I have this terrible feeling that everyone will watch this, move to Finland, and Finland will cease to be the happy place it is now

We had a small taste of this. A few rounds of stimulus cash and in exchange, extreme inflation that gobbled up that extra cash but the inflation is here to stay.

IMO, the UBI will not work. Bringing to people the fishing rod instead of a fish will make more sense. In another word, creating more jobs, more public goods, more opportunities, etc. instead of making people lazy by giving them $1,400/month.
Create more jobs that aren't necessary for people living comfortable happy lives, brilliant!

my parents would disagree, they think happiness only comes from money
Well, for lady from Helsinki it does too. Since she doesn't have any serious financial concerns. And if charity makes her happier than yes, such happiness also in a way comes from money. Without having additional money should would not be able to share any money with others by giving it to charity.

Honestly, a better program would be universal healthcare and free/ or more than reasonable cost for university. That saves people money In their paycheck. And money paid toward high medical bills and high cost education. They know what the real solution is.
this is a repeated episode :(
Yeah, I thought so too!
What Is Salvation?
Everyone experiences pain in their lifetime. No one asks to be hurt. Yet pain is commonplace in our lives. Our pain is the direct result of sin in the world. It is because of that sin that we experience pain and are separated from God. However, there is still hope for us and that hope is through Jesus Christ. God came down from heaven as the man Jesus; lived a perfect life, and then died an innocent death on the cross so that we could live a free and unencumbered life with Him.
Short answer…lots of money lol

When governments works for the people vs the other way around. We need some big changes in the US.
You mean when the government just takes more money from people?

UBI won't work in the USA. It's a different mindset here. Look what happened with all the $ that has been put out during the first year of the pandemic. As a result we have less workers than we ever have.
That is because America has a self preservation attitude vs regard for the collective
We don't have less workers. People just have better options/more savings and are not settling for employers who give them pennies and treat them poorly.
It couldn’t be implemented alone. It would require offsets across the economy. But if they did it - it WOULD work because minds would adjust just like they do every time change happens.
