While I understand the perspective that money should not be the main motivating factor for court reporting (or any career), it is for me. I know, I know, unpopular opinion. However, court reporting is a second career for me. I come from the I.T. world and I was paid very well for my skills. So I have gotten used to a certain lifestyle as a result of being paid well in that profession. I also grew up poor and money has always been a motivating factor for me to excel in school/work because I never want to live that way ever again. My second motivation has served to be on par with my first motivation: I don’t want to go back to the I.T. profession and I want to do something very much unrelated to it. Court reporting is as far away from that profession as possible and I really am enjoying it!

unfortunately, money and my child are a huge motivating factor for me. I am currently working as a clerical assistant for the NYS Courts and I absolutely love what I'm doing, but my husband and I want to move and buy a house, an make sure my son has a backyard to play in, and for us to live a comfortable life. However, on both of our salaries (he is an EMT) we are living paycheck to paycheck. We are just barely making ends meet, and we both are looking for ways to make more money. I already know I love working for the courts, so working as a stenographer would just be a paybump for me.
honestly, I'm already thinking of ways I can practice when watching my favorite shows and listening to my audiobooks and transcribing them. I do think this will be a fun career. however, my child and the relief that income will bring to my family are motivation enough for me.

@@Stenohood yes I am doing StarTran theory. Do you know anything about it? I have completed 7 lessons out of the 40, then I will do a speed building program. Do you have any recommendations on that?

I strongly recommend that you learn each chapter of your theory while trying to practice that faster and faster each time , then go on to your next chapter.. some students get bored during theory or skim through the concepts which isn’t really mastering the concepts. You have to feel confident in mastering each chapter of your theory so you don’t forget it by the time you start sped building

I am currently a caseworker for child support. I highly enjoy my career but the work environment is toxic. So I decided to become a court reporter since I already know the legal terminology and I’ll actually get paid what I deserve. I have been in schools for many different careers and no school has gotten me as excited as court reporting. I actually look forward to studying everyday!
This is the career that my dad hounded me to join since I was a teenager. All he would say is, “You type so fast and they make a lot of money.” I couldn’t stand hearing this from him as I would always say that money should NEVER be the reason you go to school for something. I would be miserably rich 😂 It wasn’t my passion and I had no interest in it. Yet, he continued all the way into my adult years.
Now that I’m in the legal field, I finally have interest in it. I cringed when I told my Dad this and all he said was, “They make $60,000 a year. Google it!” Before watching your video, my motivation was the excitement of studying and to finish school in a year so that I can get out of this financial rut as I am raising two kids alone. Now I’m rethinking my motivation since your video. Thanks!

Hi, it’s typically 2-4 years but it could be more or less than that range as well. It’s skill based and you can’t move on to the next level unless you’ve mastered the previous level at 95% at minimum. It all depends on how much time you have to dedicate to improving your skill which will determine how long you’ll be in the program.
