  • Due to a hard drive failure, we are taking a break from the cabin build and taking a ride into the future! Since spring is on the horizon, that means it's time to plant seeds for our off grid garden. We are so excited to start a garden this year! Kacie in particular, is excited about growing some ponderosa pines... her initiative is to grow a thriving forest!

Make sure you get the berries in the ground and rooted in a bit before winter. They will freeze and die in pots. Cover with some straw or needles for a little winter protection as well.

Contact your state forestry department. Here in Texas, they sell them very cheaply, but you have to agree to plant like 500 to get the price. My parents did 5his some years back after they had wood cut off the property. Gardening is a learning journey. After 30 years in Kentucky very successfully growing veggies, I moved back to east Texas. There is no soil…just sand. My tomatoes, cucumbers and squash have failed for two years. Field peas, corn and potatoes did well. This year, I invested in $300 of good dirt as I’m determined to get tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. We do have two planting seasons a year here, so that is good.

Radishes, Beets and Carrots go in the ground from seed mid May Onions go inside 2 weeks or so ago from seed. If you have onion seeds on hand, Drop some now and see how they turn out. Bulbs always seed on us here In deer Lodge. Beets to awesome and can real well. Garlic also does well, But bulbs should be sown in fall. Spring does work in a pinch. Potatoes grow well in Montana as well.

If I could only choose one thing I would do differently if I could start over, it would be getting a greenhouse sooner. The bigger the better as long as it can hold up in strong wind. (Small ones are too hard to manage to keep from overheating.). Not so much for seed starting, I still do that indoors, more for season extension. Also so nice to have a warm sunny space in winter. When the sun is shining it can easily warm up to 85F even though it's well below freezing outside. For deer fencing I ended up needing the 10 ft t-posts even though they cost significantly more. That finally worked to keep the deer out. A friend says one year during a drought the deer tore his garden fence down but that hasn't happened to me...yet. :) I totally agree with you about potting up the bare root plants and planting out later. Probably will still have some hard frost before summer. There's a market gardener in Wyoming I follow that I generally like his advice. Will look up the name of the channel. My favorite way to eat beets is roasted with other veggies.

Was just wondering if the dripping water could be condensation from using propane heaters? Have heard of that happening before at an off grid house in Idaho.

We haven't been using any propane heaters inside, just a camp chef stove.. so I'm not sure.
