Basilica of St. Vitus in Mönchengladbach is a significant landmark with a long history. Originally an abbey church of the Benedictine Order, it was elevated to the status of a papal Basilica minor by Pope Paul VI in 1974. This elevation was in connection with the 84th German Catholic Congress held in Mönchengladbach and the celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of the abbey’s founding.
