I've not drank for many decades. Married to a Thai and enjoy all that comes with a person who grew up with a culture deeply rooted in buddhism. The bars and people who work in them provide an income for so many people living in rural Thailand who would otherwise have a much lower living standard. The party scene is a 'pay for play' for all the men from around the world who crave the entoxicating lifestyle.
Yes, it has supported a lot of the rural areas for decades.
I think it is a misconception that the entire place is pay-for-play, as most of Bangkok actually isn't!
In terms of party scenes, there are actually a lot more areas that cater cater to Thai middle classes / university students in Bangkok...

This is a really insightful and honest video. I 100% agree the top five people will shape you and your choices. It's a constant battle to resist losing accountability of your own goals and values while also really letting go and soaking in the culture/lifestyle of the places where you travel.
It is indeed…especially when people first come to a place like Bangkok! Thanks for the kind words!
The bottom-line is that we need to have a strong set of boundaries when visiting a country like Thailand. As someone who has a fair bit of knowledge on the topic, of narcissism I can say that based on the stories I have heard I can say that a lot of the thai women are narcissistic. We can't diagnose people from the couch. But the behaviours of some women speaks volumes. I think that a guy needs to be prepared to walk away plenty of times before finding a woman worth keeping.
Yeah that’s a fair point. It goes both ways. It seems like the behavior on both sides can reinforce each other at times.
You map out consequences very thoughtfully. Nice to hear from someone who's been through it, and not sugar coat the traps, but also offer constructive lifestyle paths to avoid doing the Sukhumvit Swan Dive.
Thank you for the kind words. Cheers!
I loved that one. Been last year 6 month in Thailand and ended up in never land lol. Now I am coming back and plan to stay longer, I will take your advice to heart.
The first 6 months is the make or break time lol. Cheers!
I'm 54yrs old and definitely realize I have lived more life than I have left, but with that being said, I don't feel my age. I'm probably going to be the guy that, when I retire, will party a couple times out of the week at some spot in Thailand or the Philippines😃
I haven't actually visited Philippines but would like to check it out as well. I find that most people enjoy partying for a while when they first move, and then they establish a good balance over time.
@@thebangkokguide just left Cebu a few months ago; amazing time
It’s on my list!
I really enjoy your videos. Straight to the point and entertaining! :D
Thanks for the kind words! Cheers
This is so accurate. Great video!
Cheers. Thanks for the kind words!
As a visitor to Thailand over 40 years, I must say you've got it all right.
Cheers!
Great advice from an expert. Thanks brother.
Cheers! Thanks for the kind comment!
Very true words! I don´t expect this! When I came first time to thailand in 2006, I read a book from Stephen Leather,,Private Dancer. And I knew all about the thai lifestile....an eye opener for me, and I saved a lot of money, avoiding the mistakes the farang made!
For me it was more of staying in a vacation mentality and not focusing enough attention on the future or work. I think the feeling of endless summer has a strong effect as I came from a cold country!
Oh yes, same me in the beginning, but I was never envolved in a party scene. as I mention in my other post (which yt and his schitty KI, delete, because of 2 times adding some words and could not post again RETURN ERROR) I met some rich people, which live in TL for 30 years. So I stayed away from the bar scene, which old retired guys sittin the whole day. getting drunk and wasting money to bar girls. When you livin here long time you have to structure the day or you get lost!@@thebangkokguide
Appreciate the insight . Never been a big drinking and look forward to getting back there from us asap
I quit drinking as well... just a drink here and there. It's much nicer! Welcome back
Great video one of the best on this subject with a non judgmental attitude for all
Thank you for the kind words!
Good video; well said. 🙏🏼

Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thank you very much for the kind words!
I agree. Great video but lose the hat.
Great video. I visited Bangkok for a few days in June this year and it was quite intense and in your face. This is coming from a Londoner. I prefer HCMC which seems like Bangkok but from 30 years ago (and is well on its way to becoming the next Bangkok). I felt quite unprepared and am looking to re-visit it next year and spent a few weeks there before heading to HCMC and trying my hand at the expat life. Great video, you have a new subscriber - I love your understated, calm, friendly and to-the-point without being judgemental style, typical Canadian (eh!)!
Haha we Canadians need to fit in…there are never very many of us abroad. I love Vietnam as well…actually just went to central Vietnam and have traveled a lot there too. I think it would be a great country to live in as well…def has Bangkok 30 years ago vibes in HCMC
Great and sane video as always from you. I think it's really amazingly responsible that more or less all of the popular Bangkok RUclipsrs have now very frankly spoken out about this topic and are cautioning to watch out on the alcohol (and drug) front. I think they are realising that they have a responsibility of some form - people watch their content and come for the amazing condos and the neverending party and the women - and what it creates in human fallout, broken dreams and mayhem in a city that would also like to go about its business often enough, without sex and drugs tourists on their crazy lawless binges.
It's so damn ironic since I left my hometown Berlin - it's Bangkok's spiritual sibling city when it comes to nightlife and neverland and neverending parties and drugs - as this whole lifestyle doesn't appeal to me anymore, to find somewhere else more mature. After travelling around SE Asia for months, I've now arrived in Bangkok hoping for a "Tokyo-on-a-budget" with more cosmopolitan culture, creative scenes and artistic venues, but realise I've ultimately just moved to another version of Berlin that just looks more cyberpunk from my 29th floor Sathorn window front.
I've already gone out - my first time after many years - and actually enjoyed it. Bangkok's clubs really are beautiful, and it's a credit to the Thais that they know how to party and enjoy a dance. Many of their SE Asian neighbours don't, and don't dance. Yet it's so easy to see why it'd be so tempting to slip into this Neverland. I'm old enough now to value my sanity and usual sobriety, but I root for every guy who comes here and gets lost in the excitement and the sound and lights and fun of it all. Good luck, brothers, but don't lose your ways, and stay safe on the roads.
Thanks for the input! I spent time in Berlin a long time ago when I was still a teenager. Great city, and definitely can see the similarities.
I think that many people who come to Bangkok go through a sortof arc, where they party a lot and as long as they survive that, then they start to discover the real charms and beauty of the city!
Great video - I've been here a couple of years now. I relate to what you're saying about expats, I've bumped into quite a few narcissists and weirdos. The nicest expats I've met is at running events, which there are lots in Thailand :) (also I'm not really a drinker so a lunchtime beer in Nana plaza isn't really for me! )
I think running clubs would be a good spot as well! I find that once you get out of the drinking scene, it’s a totally different place. I mostly stopped drinking a few years back now and I find it’s like a different city!
So true my brother well said
Cheers! Thanks for the kind comment!
so true very good explaination of Neverland🤙👍✅
Cheers! Thanks for the kind words!
Good stuff!
Thanks!
thank for sharing ❤
Thanks for watching!
i have visited amsterdam many times , i call it planet amsterdam, bangkok can be measured on the same metric, the illusion continues as long as your cash does , reality can be a hard landing
I heard Amsterdam has changed a lot recently! Haven’t been there in years
You described the life and dangers for single men. For families is totally different.
Yeah, that is definitely true…although I do wonder if some of those guys were family men at one time…
Liked your report. Telling like it is.
Cheers
Great video
Thank you 🙏
Truth. Looking forward to landing on the 27 th Oct.
Just in time for the end of rainy season haha
Can you make a video on visas and best way to stay in Thailand for a long time
In the process of finishing a couple on the subject. First should be up later today and second later this week.
Nice videos. ❤😊
Thank you 🙏
You gotta have a tough mindset and remember womens mindsets dont change from one side of the workd to the next ive been to Thailand first at around 19 or 20 been out a few times i. 40 now never had a priblem attracting women in my own country so done quite well with then in Thailand rearly ever paying for sex although we always do some way buying drinks or food for the lady .
The one thing i was grateful for was i never no natter how beautiful the girls where i never got feeling for them i kust knew i wouod be burned in the end .
Stay stong guys remember its all a game
South East Asia is a great place for a holiday but to live no thanks going to Thailand for 3 weeks in march then I'm happy to go home 🏡 😂 !
Yeah, I think it really comes down to individual preferences! Cheers!
I'm coming to Thailand soon. Dont really know anyone yet. Besides the usual going out and meeting people, any recommendations to meet people to network/hangout?
When I first came here, my initial friend group actually came from going to a couple of coachsurfing meetups but that was quite a long time ago now! I don’t even know if that still functions. I ended up meeting most of my friends who lived here by just going out and talking to random people a lot. It’s fairly easy to join friend groups as people constantly come and go here…need those replacement bodies!
Damn, I’m glad the drinking is gone and the parties down to a minimum…
Someone’s been working out!
Same for me…have a drink or two every now and then. When you quit drink you realize how much time and energy it takes from you. Cheers
Thumbs up 👍
🙏😊
Not looking to move to Neverland. That's why l picked Jomtien over downtown Pattaya. I may poke my head in once in a blue moon.
I agree. Personally, I try to avoid actually living in overly tourist areas. The interactions are just totally different once you get outside them.
@@thebangkokguideyour last video was in a garden, where in Thailand is quiet, green, and people are helpful with English speaking knowledge?
Central Bangkok has lots of parks…it can be a bit more touristy, but personally I like it there!
Sat next to the Klong. Mmmm.
Comfortable spot 😂
And I will see you in Neverland ! Lol
Welcome! 😅
Same thing happened in Alaska after a divorce.
Yeah I think it can really depend on each individuals head space, and can occur anywhere!
Christ, after watching this video I need a drink!
Me too 😅😅
Very informative! Whos the babe in the thumbnail?
Hiding in the video haha
0:23 what that building in the left side, its look european.
Yeah, you find some buildings with a European style. That one is located between Rama 9 and Petchaburi MRT. Love the canals in the area!
♥️♥️♥️🇵🇭
Lol
I think you can be a part of Thai culture and still stay a Farang. You can embrace your roots and still be assimilated.
Also maybe this attitude is why things are the way they are. Kind of the hen and the egg. How many people do you even know who bothered to learn more than Saswasdee Khrap and Sabai Di Mai? I am actually shocked time and time again about how many Farang have been living in Thailand for more than a decade and cannot speak Thai up to a level where they understand basic conversation.
What would you think as a Thai person, if you see all of this over and over again? I could surely tell you what I think about migrants here in Germany who don't bother to learn our language, but still have an attitude, like also many expats do in Thailand, but I'd rather not...
On the other hand I know Turks, Persians, Arabs, North Africans and what not, who I would even classify as being more German than me. Do they still always have the stigma of an outsider to them? Absolutely. It's probably happen all over the worls. On the other hand, they are integrated very much into German society.
it's a give and take and surely not something as black and white as people like to paint it in order to get away with being lazy fucks.
Yeah I agree with that assessment. I think that is essentially what I would recommend for a long term expat to embrace…to recognize the fact that you can be part of Thai culture but you will always stay a Farang in it. It is somewhat different from most western countries that are defined as civic, rather than ethnic, states…but of course ethnicity still factors in there too. I guess I was thinking about the long term guys that end up complaining about everything for not being treated as equal to Thais on an interpersonal or legal level (eg 10x national park fees), despite great effort to assimilate.
I know my country is a mess (USA). However, there is a defined and attainable path to citizenship. The Federal government will assist you by recommending the steps to take. English classes are everywhere and affordable. When you pass the citizenship exam, some immigrants can stay dual citizens. Comparatively, Thailand is kind of a closed society. I am OK with it for now, trying to stay in Thailand until I'm eligible for Medicare.
Yeah, there is a big difference between western countries, which are immigration oriented and non-western countries which tend to be more ethnically defined. I have no complaints about it, but it's just something people should be aware of when they choose to live here.
Mistake 4 - Don't constantly bang on about "Neverland" as a single man in a place like Thailand - people might get the wrong idea about your preferred sexual partners 😬
I’d never considered that connotation..lol okay fair point
@@thebangkokguide 😂 just poking fun a bit mate. Enjoyed the video 👍
It's all good. Lol I actually hadn't given that sufficient thought!
Why would you move to Thailand in the first place...
Titties and beer!
Coz it's a fascinating nation and people with incredible natural beauty, where you can live extremely luxuriously on a budget - no matter if you choose beach, metropolis or mountains. It's enough to compare the very different vibe of Thailand's two largest cities Bangkok and Chiang Mai to understand that your question is stupid. Different lifestyles and temperaments, but infinitely more bang for your buck than you could ever get anywhere in the West.
It's a great place to live, but just requires some self control. My previous video explains my reasons for moving!
I mean Thai economy is weak, it has no democracy, no freedom of speech. As a EU citizen we have a lot of climates and cities variety too. I assume you are an American so you guys have a lot climates too and strong economy and a lot more advantages.
Do you like thai culture? I personally don't think I could integrate in any asian society.@@marsfuture
Why ask a hypothetical question when he actually moved to Thailand?
Those homeless tourists can always go back home, find jobs, save money and fly back to Thailand again. Easy. But they dont do it🤔
Yes, they can. I think they mostly have mental problems...
Mistake #1, living in Bangkok, easily the worst place in the entire country to live. Mistake #2, apparently not even trying to assimilate in the least bit, seriously you're just a perpetual tourist. Seriously young man, you don't know what you're talking about, and it's abundantly obvious to someone like me who has been here much longer and has learned the language very well.
I don’t know. I’ve done pretty well here, and I’m not sure where you picked up that I can’t speak Thai… literally never said anything about not learning the language. There’s a difference between learning and speaking the language and trying to actually be Thai… learning the language is great, but I’ve seen a few too many foreigners that endlessly complain about not being accepted as a Thai, when they never should have assumed that they would be.
@@thebangkokguide When or how did I state you haven't tried to learn the language? Maybe read to understand, instead of focusing on a reply. BTW, I have blonde hair and blue eyes, no chance of me being "accepted as Thai".
@@ExpatriatePaul umm you called me a ‘perpetual tourist’ and said ‘I’m not even trying to assimilate in the least bit’.. you made quite a few assumptions based on me advising western people that they will never be viewed as Thai because it is an ethnically defined country. What is incorrect about my advice? Do you think they will?
@@thebangkokguide Read what I wrote again, you assume entirely too much, not me.
@@ExpatriatePaul lol I literally quoted you and you got zero reply 😂
Hey, so how much money did you go to Neverland, and how long did it take you to burn through it?
Wasn't too much to be fair...maybe about 40k. Overall my spending was actually pretty reasonable, as I stayed for about three years and it just supplemented part-time income.
Bro ur still rocking Ecko T shirt in 2023 no wonder you are homeless :D
