I work from home for a european company, my salary is just only a bit lower than employers in europe, approx. 300-400 euro lesser than employers who work for the same company and for the same department in Europe. They have so many expenses there in Europe. I'm happy to work and stay in a place where the holiday is in front of the door, don't have to travel long distance by airplane to chill out on nice beaches in phuket. Nearly every weekend going to beach and relax. What a great life

I work as customer support, answering phone calls,emails and do other administrative tasks. U can search for customer support jobs online, u will find many companies that also offer work from home, such as binance etc. I think if u don't have computer programming or web design knowledge, then is customer support another option for work from home
As a 61 yr old Canadian, I'm retiring in Jomtien in January. Brand new condo complex with a 1 bedroom apartment. 480.00 a month, with all the amenities. Home base it will be so l can travel around. Sick of what Canada has become.
I think not only in canada. A lot of peoples from Europen countries told me that everything has gotten really bad in Europe. Everything has also become more expensive because of inflation. Many pensioners have difficulty living well with their monthly pension. So that's maybe the main reason why many retirees wanna live in tropical island such as phuket or koh samui, which is a bit exspensive, cheaper coastal cities like hua hin, rayong, pattaya, krabi is also a good choice, or living in the cheaper northern part of Thailand like chiangmai.
Kudos to you as a fellow Canadian I wish you the best on your new adventure. Canada is barely recognizable, in such a short time so much changed and people are oblivious about it.
The culture of western countries has gradually been degraded through the brainwashing of its young through media and especially the educational systems. The goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the states have created a more liberal but worse society. When we compromise ourselves and our values into oblivion, we are being led into spiritual death.
I'm Thai who spent 7 years doing my uni degree in Calgary some thirty odd years ago. Gathered from what I have seen on RUclips and from some of of my Canadian friends who came to visit, it seems that Canada has changed since my time over there. That's to me is really saddening as for all the countries I have lived in apart from Thailand, Canada is my favorite. I was fortunate to have met really nice Canadians during my formative years there. I told my friends who are also seriously thinking about retiring in Thailand that they would always be welcomed. I was also during my younger years had thought of moving overseas. I'm glad I didn't, looking where I am now, Thailand is a great place to be It's in our nature, I guess Bhudism has made our culture and way of thinking unique. Cheers❤
Thanks for the input! I think it really depends on the city and location in Canada. I love the nature there, but the cities have become less and less appealing to live in. I haven’t been to Calgary, so I can’t comment on it specifically..but I actually had many friends that moved there from Toronto and Ottawa, and they’ve mostly said positive things as well! I agree that I think the culture here is very unique and relaxed. I definitely still have an outsiders view, as foreigners here live in their own little bubble culture as well, but it’s very nice 🙏😊

I actually just read that in terms of affordability, Vancouver is now the third most expensive city in the world... The healthcare service is similar in Toronto...hard to get any service at all!

I'm in Vancouver too and I agree that the health service is terrible! Accommodation is ridiculous and for 5 months the weather is terrible. Also I'd say that a downside to living in Vancouver is that there's not a lot of social opportunities. People from different ethnicity's staying in their own groups and speaking their own language makes it pretty much impossible to join in. On the plus side the 7 months that the weather is decent it's great to be outdoors, the mountains, the beach etc... Ideally I'd do a few months somewhere sunny and then 7 or 8 months in Canada

Thanks for sharing this video. I went to Laos earlier this year for 10 days and it's all I can think about now. I have never experienced such a place. The food was wonder, the nature was great but it was the people that stood out most for me. I've planned a trip to Vietnam for early next year but I can't help but think that the best thing for me to do at this point of my life would be to move to South East Asia...
I went to Vietnam last month. Love it there too! It's a beautiful region. You can always rent an inexpensive place for 6 months and travel around a bit. Highly recommend that approach!

This is a very good sharing of living in Thailand as a foreigner. Bangkok always excels as the top choice for a second home for many expats compared with other cities thanks to the inclusive cluture, kind people, trully international connections, and low cost of living! While only three shortcomings: traffic, air quality in dry season and water.

Incredible interesting video. I'm currently living in the Netherlands a western country with bad weather half the time and also the separated society that you describe. Its that last one that gets to me the most. Its to individually oriented. In the southern countries like Spain it is already much more social. You touched on all the points that I don't like in living in the west which indeed is starting to get outdated, but nobody realizes it yet. I'm moving next year to the Caribbean for at least a year to be close to my Parents and after that I will head east, because that is where the next economic boom will be and as you said, good weather always something to do and its safe.

I'm also Thai who had been living abroad in the USA for half of my life. I was raised in the Mid Atlantic and New England region, commonly known as the Northeast Coast, right in the heart of the early establishment of the American Revolutionary War. The USA and Canada share the similar western value, except one shows the patriotism and the other shows the loyalism. I also moved back to my country since 2009, thus I can also relate with your list of reasons to why settling in Thailand should be the right choice. 1.) Thailand is the land of smiles and also known as the land of the compromise to be humble, merciful, and indirect. In contrary, the American culture (speaking from my own experience) is more confronting to be arrogant, stubborn, and upfront whenever the conflict becomes their business. 2.) Thailand's GDP compromises the low cost of living, although the cost-push inflation tends to escalate through time. The Thai currency also deflates its value against other western currencies, thus the expectation to the cheap cost of living in the 90's is long gone. Thailand is still affordable for a legitimate traveler and no longer so for a backpacker (In some cases, becomes a begpacker when they go bust). 3.) Thailand's weather is stable all year round. In fact, the monsoon season is the right moment for the Thai farmer to harvest crops and plow a paddy field. The Thai natural resource is also abundant all year round, the greenhouse farming is not necessary to the Thai environment. In contrary, most area becomes a dead zone throughout the North American Continent whenever the snow or hail storm hits the ground with the temperature that goes minus zero. (As you said earlier, the weather is brutal when your location is situated at the edge of the earth) 🙂 P.S. The word "Mai Pen Rai (ไม่่เป็นไร)" is actually "let bygones be bygones", if I would put this Thai phrase into the direct American idiom.

Speaking from Belgium here, I work from home for the federal government. This means I still do have to go to the office occasionally, basically just to show that you’re still alive or something along the lines. This also means our work’s VPN is set to Belgium. If I could bypass this I could work from Thailand haha. Yet a better solution would be a remote job which allows me to work from Thailand. Yet I can’t find any opportunities yet 😢

If you can take a "SABBATICAL Working leave".. why not? Just check with your VPN provider if they can operate from Thailand. Just check the UPlink/Downlink specs to see if that can match , prices etc: Phuket speed is " 7.58 Mbps download and 2.66 Mbps upload speeds" Means you need to get to "work" by 15:00 hrs phuket time -- 🙂
I was really amazed how much better WiFi and cell service has improved there over the last 10 years. First time I went there it wasn’t very good but now it’s really impressive. Even taking a boat ride to Koh Lipe last year we had service the entire way.

excellent video, we live in Penticton BC, and are planning to move to Hua Hin next year, we are going to set everything up this winter, then rent out our townhouse, we should clear $2,000 CAD from that, we should have a great life in Thailand on that amount, in 5 years we can get our Canada pensions. I am German and I have visited Thailand and also Bangkok for 3 weeks at beginning of 2020 right before covid, together with my husband. It was the most wonderful holiday of our lifes and we keep thinking about it very often!! We honestly don‘t see my future in germany anylonger, I can‘t stand how people think and behave here, I don‘t like the weather during 80% of the year 🙈 as we want to have kids soon we are thinking about how and when we do the ,drastic change‘ and leave the country, I don‘t see it as a no-go to have move with little kids but of course it will make it a little bit more difficult 🫣
It sounds like a nice plan. It can be much more challenging with kids due to education and healthcare costs. I’ll be uploading a video later today that covers some of the longer term difficulties that expats have to give a more balanced perspective.

I finally did Australia, New Zealand and French Polynesia this year... a lifetime ambition to see Tahiti with my own eyes since discovering the explorer Captain Cook at primary school more than 50 years ago! Almost exactly halfway round the world in 7 years has been deliberately leisurely, but thorough... calling Thailand home has therefore been foundational for contemporary nomadic living and authentic world travel! There is something very special about Thailand that brings me back... and more than willingly! Finding the exact right location for you personally is obviously key... but rural/coastal Thailand so easily crushes city/tourist/expat destinations for me... why live in a city when you can live next to the ocean and mountains, wildlife parks and tropical rainforests! Age might have something to do with these personal preferences of course! Another year or 2 perhaps but the America's are still calling! Good video, thnks!

Not just you brother, I been living in Sydney for 29 years now im planning to moving back for to Thailand is my home and the country I love the most by 2026 I will moving back for good to Thailand , I see more opportunities in Thailand to have my own Bakery .
For me in the next 10 yrs we gonna see the biggest migration from to East side of the world in our history due to the cost of living in the west is crazy expensive like hell. Sydney is the world 2nd most expensive city on earth now.
Totally love the mindset in many Asian countries from East-Asia and SE-Asia. It resonates much more with what I want in life than the western mindset. Cost of living, internet, quality of hospitals and crime rate reduces my choices to a few possible countries and Thailand comes out on top.

I realized I can travel (slowly) cheaper than I can stay in my house here in Florida. Hell, my electric bill has been over $600 a month this summer. I’m selling the house and leaving the US. Everything is too expensive.
Damm bro, i dint even know, that i have seasonal affective disorder, i had no idea, that was a thing...i also live in country, where there is winter almost half a year, i always hated, when summer was over and 6 months of hell are ahead, for the past 10 years i wanted to move to a tropical country, but there was always something. Ironic to see lots of Weaterners complain about the living standards in Europe and many vying to settle in Thailand whereas it’s a reverse for Thai people, most Thais would move to US, Canada, Europe in a heartbeat.
This is true. It really depends on each situation in terms of the best possible scenario. Minimum wages in western countries are much higher, along with benefits. I don’t dislike western countries…there are lots of opportunities there as well; although I think some of the comparative advantages are shifting.

I agree with 90% of what you say however air pollution in BKK made me to leave this city after 3 weeks. it's simply very unhealthy environment and i decided to move south. Even super beautiful Chiang Mai during the burning grass season turns into a Mad Max city:)

I think the biggest problem is to get a job. I am from Switzerland and really want to move to Thailand but i have not idea how. I work in an office since 10 years but they dont offer remote work and my english is not on a business english level. Next year i go for 2 month holiday to Thailand, really looking forward to it.
Great insight , I am Polish originaly so I can see your point about living 6months in winter conditions, moved to south America but surprisingly things are very expensive there transport is basic and levels of crime are of another level. I am surprised to learn that Thailand is rather safe place with modern infrastructure. Arent you bother by the fact that you are always going to be a foreigner because of your looks? I am tall with blue eyes and no matter how hard I tried to blend in I was always treated different better or worse. Know people from UK where Inlive now that ate working flat out for 6 months and then going to Philippines to spend winter there. With average energy bill almost £2000 per year you are better off spensing 500 on flight and 200 on flat per month in Asia
Thanks for the comment. Personally, I have come to embrace just being an outsider in the society. It comes with some advantages. There aren’t really any societal or cultural expectations, so the expat community is kindof free to create its own little mini culture within the bigger culture. It can be freeing. It’s definitely something that people need to embrace if they plan to live in Thailand, or any ethnically defined state.
My mother was able to raise 3 sons and her extended family and live comfortably by purely living off of my father's German pension that was transferred to her upon his death. We weren't hood-rich, but it was comfortable (now that i'm an adult, it's no longer comfortable, for me at least😂). It wasn't much either 40k bahts per month, but it was more than enough for Thailand. Especially out in a random countryside. If Westerners thinks BKK and big cities of Thailand's cheap already. Try going out of it, it can be even cheaper.

Everything's price in US has gone to the roof. They don't manufacture much these days and import most good from other countries. In Portland, Oregon, there are plenty of spaces outside of city, but they can't build houses due to zoning. They can't build apartment building in some neighborhood. Building houses are also too expensive. They also take a long time to build house or fix road. It takes like 2 years and they still can't finish expanding a short highway. US has severe housing shortage. Medical cost is also crazy. The countries is run by some super rich guys.
I agree. From Calgary here. Everything here is super expensive now. Cost of living is insane. Housing price is crazy. Mortgage is crazy. Many people are just living paycheck to paycheck. No life... Health care system is the worst. Three hours wait time just to get admitted at a hospital.

I'm in Vancouver too and I agree that the health service is terrible! Accommodation is ridiculous and for 5 months the weather is terrible. Also I'd say that a downside to living in Vancouver is that there's not a lot of social opportunities. People from different ethnicity's staying in their own groups and speaking their own language makes it pretty much impossible to join in. On the plus side the 7 months that the weather is decent it's great to be outdoors, the mountains, the beach etc... Ideally I'd do a few months somewhere sunny and then 7 or 8 months in Canada
Just dont try to turn it into Canada like Californians moving to different states and trying to turn it to California.

Thanks for sharing this video. I went to Laos earlier this year for 10 days and it's all I can think about now. I have never experienced such a place. The food was wonder, the nature was great but it was the people that stood out most for me. I've planned a trip to Vietnam for early next year but I can't help but think that the best thing for me to do at this point of my life would be to move to South East Asia...
I went to Vietnam last month. Love it there too! It's a beautiful region. You can always rent an inexpensive place for 6 months and travel around a bit. Highly recommend that approach!

This is a very good sharing of living in Thailand as a foreigner. Bangkok always excels as the top choice for a second home for many expats compared with other cities thanks to the inclusive cluture, kind people, trully international connections, and low cost of living! While only three shortcomings: traffic, air quality in dry season and water.

Incredible interesting video. I'm currently living in the Netherlands a western country with bad weather half the time and also the separated society that you describe. Its that last one that gets to me the most. Its to individually oriented.
In the southern countries like Spain it is already much more social.
You touched on all the points that I don't like in living in the west which indeed is starting to get outdated, but nobody realizes it yet.
I'm moving next year to the Caribbean for at least a year to be close to my Parents and after that I will head east, because that is where the next economic boom will be and as you said, good weather always something to do and its safe.

I'm also Thai who had been living abroad in the USA for half of my life. I was raised in the Mid Atlantic and New England region, commonly known as the Northeast Coast, right in the heart of the early establishment of the American Revolutionary War. The USA and Canada share the similar western value, except one shows the patriotism and the other shows the loyalism.
I also moved back to my country since 2009, thus I can also relate with your list of reasons to why settling in Thailand should be the right choice.
1.) Thailand is the land of smiles and also known as the land of the compromise to be humble, merciful, and indirect. In contrary, the American culture (speaking from my own experience) is more confronting to be arrogant, stubborn, and upfront whenever the conflict becomes their business.
2.) Thailand's GDP compromises the low cost of living, although the cost-push inflation tends to escalate through time. The Thai currency also deflates its value against other western currencies, thus the expectation to the cheap cost of living in the 90's is long gone. Thailand is still affordable for a legitimate traveler and no longer so for a backpacker (In some cases, becomes a begpacker when they go bust).
3.) Thailand's weather is stable all year round. In fact, the monsoon season is the right moment for the Thai farmer to harvest crops and plow a paddy field. The Thai natural resource is also abundant all year round, the greenhouse farming is not necessary to the Thai environment. In contrary, most area becomes a dead zone throughout the North American Continent whenever the snow or hail storm hits the ground with the temperature that goes minus zero. (As you said earlier, the weather is brutal when your location is situated at the edge of the earth) 🙂
P.S. The word "Mai Pen Rai (ไม่่เป็นไร)" is actually "let bygones be bygones", if I would put this Thai phrase into the direct American idiom.
Mai pen rai also means "no big deal" or "no problem".

@Eoghan-hs2wz : Yes, let bygones be bygones is to forgive and forget about past offenses and conflicts. Mai Pen Rai can also be used in a broad variety of situations to dissolve the conflict in general. Thailand is best known for a non-confrontational country, so I use the English idiom "let bygones be bygones" to cover the general meaning in the way of the Thai culture.
@yaiburanakul8505 : Mai Pen Rai also covers the meaning of "No big deal" or "No Problem" in everyday situation. The best compromise for the English idiom is "just let it slide".

Speaking from Belgium here, I work from home for the federal government. This means I still do have to go to the office occasionally, basically just to show that you’re still alive or something along the lines. This also means our work’s VPN is set to Belgium. If I could bypass this I could work from Thailand haha. Yet a better solution would be a remote job which allows me to work from Thailand. Yet I can’t find any opportunities yet 😢
Yeah, this seems to still be pretty standard...remote work, but with location requirements to prevent people from moving to a different country. Need to keep looking!
If you can take a "SABBATICAL Working leave".. why not? Just check with your VPN provider if they can operate from Thailand. Just check the UPlink/Downlink specs to see if that can match , prices etc: Phuket speed is " 7.58 Mbps download and 2.66 Mbps upload speeds"
Means you need to get to "work" by 15:00 hrs phuket time -- 🙂

I was really amazed how much better WiFi and cell service has improved there over the last 10 years. First time I went there it wasn’t very good but now it’s really impressive. Even taking a boat ride to Koh Lipe last year we had service the entire way.
The infrastructure here has improved extremely rapidly. When I was back in Canada it felt very dated.

excellent video, we live in Penticton BC, and are planning to move to Hua Hin next year, we are going to set everything up this winter, then rent out our townhouse, we should clear $2,000 CAD from that, we should have a great life in Thailand on that amount, in 5 years we can get our Canada pensions. Love your honest video, after 7 trips to Thailand I agree with everything you say about Thailand and Canada, I love Canada, but it is not the same country as it was when I was growing up, luckily I have no mortgage, that is HUGE but still the winters here are horrible, I want great weather all year around!!!

I am German and I have visited Thailand and also Bangkok for 3 weeks at beginning of 2020 right before covid, together with my husband. It was the most wonderful holiday of our lifes and we keep thinking about it very often!! We honestly don‘t see my future in germany anylonger, I can‘t stand how people think and behave here, I don‘t like the weather during 80% of the year 🙈 as we want to have kids soon we are thinking about how and when we do the ,drastic change‘ and leave the country, I don‘t see it as a no-go to have move with little kids but of course it will make it a little bit more difficult 🫣
It sounds like a nice plan. It can be much more challenging with kids due to education and healthcare costs. I’ll be uploading a video later today that covers some of the longer term difficulties that expats have to give a more balanced perspective.

Accurate and well informed video Cal! I have had my base here for 7 years too! I finally did Australia, New Zealand and French Polynesia this year... a lifetime ambition to see Tahiti with my own eyes since discovering the explorer Captain Cook at primary school more than 50 years ago! Almost exactly halfway round the world in 7 years has been deliberately leisurely, but thorough... calling Thailand home has therefore been foundational for contemporary nomadic living and authentic world travel! There is something very special about Thailand that brings me back... and more than willingly! Finding the exact right location for you personally is obviously key... but rural/coastal Thailand so easily crushes city/tourist/expat destinations for me... why live in a city when you can live next to the ocean and mountains, wildlife parks and tropical rainforests! Age might have something to do with these personal preferences of course! Another year or 2 perhaps but the America's are still calling! Good video, thnks!

Totally love the mindset in many Asian countries from East-Asia and SE-Asia. It resonates much more with what I want in life than the western mindset. Cost of living, internet, quality of hospitals and crime rate reduces my choices to a few possible countries and Thailand comes out on top.

I realized I can travel (slowly) cheaper than I can stay in my house here in Florida. Hell, my electric bill has been over $600 a month this summer. I’m selling the house and leaving the US. Everything is too expensive.
With Florida property markets, you could probably set it up as a rental and easily living off the rental income as well!

Damm bro, i dint even know, that i have seasonal affective disorder, i had no idea, that was a thing...i also live in country, where there is winter almost half a year, i always hated, when summer was over and 6 months of hell are ahead, for the past 10 years i wanted to move to a tropical country, but there was always something. But now im finally moving to thailand in 3 weeks, could not be more happy now, and cant wait to get there...just a dream come true.

Ironic to see lots of Weaterners complain about the living standards in Europe and many vying to settle in Thailand whereas it’s a reverse for Thai people, most Thais would move to US, Canada, Europe in a heartbeat.
This is true. It really depends on each situation in terms of the best possible scenario. Minimum wages in western countries are much higher, along with benefits. I don’t dislike western countries…there are lots of opportunities there as well; although I think some of the comparative advantages are shifting.

I agree with 90% of what you say however air pollution in BKK made me to leave this city after 3 weeks. it's simply very unhealthy environment and i decided to move south. Even super beautiful Chiang Mai during the burning grass season turns into a Mad Max city:)

I think the biggest problem is to get a job. I am from Switzerland and really want to move to Thailand but i have not idea how. I work in an office since 10 years but they dont offer remote work and my english is not on a business english level. Next year i go for 2 month holiday to Thailand, really looking forward to it.

Great insight , I am Polish originaly so I can see your point about living 6months in winter conditions, moved to south America but surprisingly things are very expensive there transport is basic and levels of crime are of another level. I am surprised to learn that Thailand is rather safe place with modern infrastructure. Arent you bother by the fact that you are always going to be a foreigner because of your looks? I am tall with blue eyes and no matter how hard I tried to blend in I was always treated different better or worse. Know people from UK where Inlive now that ate working flat out for 6 months and then going to Philippines to spend winter there. With average energy bill almost £2000 per year you are better off spensing 500 on flight and 200 on flat per month in Asia
Thanks for the comment. Personally, I have come to embrace just being an outsider in the society. It comes with some advantages. There aren’t really any societal or cultural expectations, so the expat community is kindof free to create its own little mini culture within the bigger culture. It can be freeing. It’s definitely something that people need to embrace if they plan to live in Thailand, or any ethnically defined state.
My mother was able to raise 3 sons and her extended family and live comfortably by purely living off of my father's German pension that was transferred to her upon his death. We weren't hood-rich, but it was comfortable (now that i'm an adult, it's no longer comfortable, for me at least😂). It wasn't much either 40k bahts per month, but it was more than enough for Thailand. Especially out in a random countryside. If Westerners thinks BKK and big cities of Thailand's cheap already. Try going out of it, it can be even cheaper.

Cheers! It’s not far at all…plenty of beaches within a couple of hours! But definitely not right on your doorstep.
Everything's price in US has gone to the roof. They don't manufacture much these days and import most good from other countries. In Portland, Oregon, there are plenty of spaces outside of city, but they can't build houses due to zoning. They can't build apartment building in some neighborhood. Building houses are also too expensive. They also take a long time to build house or fix road. It takes like 2 years and they still can't finish expanding a short highway. US has severe housing shortage. Medical cost is also crazy. The countries is run by some super rich guys.

I agree. From Calgary here. Everything here is super expensive now. Cost of living is insane. Housing price is crazy. Mortgage is crazy. Many people are just living paycheck to paycheck. No life... Health care system is the worst. Three hours wait time just to get admitted at a hospital.
That was my experience when I was back there a few years ago…prices up, quality down… it wasn’t very appealing to stay!
