- If you don't want to have to hide your painting behind glass did you know you can use wax to seal and protect your work?
This short video shows you how to use Dorland’s wax to seal and preserve watercolours. This is watercolour on canvas, but you can do the same on panels or paper. It is simple to do and produces a lovely sheen.
I have written a book 'Painting watercolours on Canvas', published by Crowood Press and available in print or as an ebook - just search for Liz Chaderton on Amazon and it'll show up! We run a Facebook group for people painting in watercolour on canvas. Do come and join / 463275440905151 and there is a Waxed Watercolors groups too / 1682310445260277
And yet another great tip, both on how you achieved that stunning texture and how you preserved watercolour on canvas from the dangers of water, dirt etc. Many thanks Liz. A very happy Scottish beginner 😁
welcome to the wonderful world of watercolour
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing your talents and tips!
you found it! hope it was useful.
thank you for sharing this! I bought four of your books and am absolutely loving them. You have made watercolor painting fun!!!
Music to my ears. Watercolour is fun!
How cool. Beautiful peacock

SAw your work in Watercolor Artist. I loved it. Had to watch your videos. Thank you for sharing. You are an amazing artist.
Thank you so much! it was a lovely article…
I used a “hog’s hair brush” and will buff today…thank you Liz.
great!
Thanks Liz. You showed me this at a workshop but I’d forgotten what you said!
Lots to take in on a workshop so either these films or my book is a good back up 😀
Thank you purchased two of your books fantastic thank you
Thank you! Hope you find them really useful
Wonderful. I have been wondering if one can use gouache on canvas, and this wax. You answered all my questions! Thank you. The peacock looks just lovely!
we have a watercolour on canvas group on Facebook. would love to see your work over there. put the u in when you search for watercolour or it won’t come up.
The guashe has to not be thick
So beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you so much for sharing 💕😊🙏
My pleasure 😊
Love your painting
thank you!
Thank you for showing this Liz...love your work so much. I hope to see more videos on your channel soon. 😍
Thanks! Haven’t done any for ages. I will make it a New Years Resolution!
Waiting for mine to dry!
should not take too long
Everything about your painting is stunningly beautiful; the texture, the colours and his expression. One thought I had would be to add a smidge more wax and buffing to his eye and a bit of his beak so that they catch and reflect the light just a wee bit more and give them an almost lifelike element . Either way, just beautiful and thank you for the tips. Do you do watercolour swatches? I’ve been trying too teach myself to do them but they never come out quite as perfectly as I’ve seen others. Either too much or too little water🤷🏻♀️.
Glad you like it. I tried putting wax in particular places on another painting and found it spread a little as I buffed it, so the impact wasn’t really worth the hassle, for me. By swatches, do you mean going light to dark in even steps? It’s such a useful exercise for helping you control the amount of paint and water on your brush.
@@LizChadertonArt ah, i understand re the wax. Re swatches: I meant more as a way of knowing which colours one has and how they react/mix to make it easier to choose which colours one has in order to create a working palette. (Speaking of which, I loved the piece you did of your dog. I never would have thought to use the palette you chose - i would have been afraid of making a list of mud - but it really worked. His eye is luminous and the values played so well to show his coat. Also loved the doodles to help define some of that 😊. My pooch passed very recently and I’ve been trying to figure out how to commemorate him through art. You’ve inspired me with your approach.)
@@teff2178 Sorry to hear about your dog. Our pets leave big holes in our lives. I will have a think about swatching and choosing a palette and see what I can come up with
Hi there. I've used this method on a few of my watercolors, but have noticed that shiny spots will develop in places where the painting has been handled. Can I get rid of these shiny spots by buffing the whole thing?
Also, can I buff my painting years later? Or do I need to do it right away? Thank you.
I’ve never noticed that, but I buff mine rather than leave it matte. I would buff the whole thing to even it out. Use a lint free cloth or some people swear by a coffee filter. You could apply another coat of wax onto a clean already waxed surface, let it cure and then buff. I believe you can dry and buff later. No idea about years later, but certainly weeks later.
@@LizChadertonArt thank you!
Hi, great videos. in your experience how many years do watercolor paintings with the wax last? I can't find any real info about it. Thanks!
I have been using it for 5/6 years and not seen any change. I understand it is archival and non yellowing, which implies 100 years. if you want a definitive answer, I would contact the technical department of Dorlands and ask direct!
@@LizChadertonArt Sounds good, Thank you!
Does this wax work on watercolor on canvas that was not prepped by watercolor ground?
I don't see why not. If you have not used an absorbent ground, the watercolour will be even more fragile and not 'stick' to the canvas well. I would spray with an acrylic varnish first and then wax. Always test it out first so you do not ruin a precious painting.
Nice video. Thank you
Glad you liked it
I've just started using this, but the one thing to be wary of is using on black watercolour. Using my fingers, even though it is wax and not water, my Daniel Smith lamp black smudged a bit! :( I ended up using a brush to do the rest of the black (of course it had to be a black cat! Lol) hopefully it holds well for the buffing portion...
gosh! I’ve never encountered that. I would spray with a varnish containing uv filters, let it dry and then wax. there is a waxed watercolour group on Facebook, so you could ask in there whether anyone has had the same problem.
I've experienced this too with blacks, indigos, etc, but it's been very, very slight.
Thank you so much. Does the wax harden so it's washable? or might it get sticky in warm climates and collect dust difficult to remove? Love your expertise. thanks again.
this is a hard wax finish. it will not melt in the heat (I’ve left pics in a hot car with no issue). Once cured (time depend on thickness, 1-2 days) it can be buffed to a sheen and wiped over gently with a cloth to remove dust. I wouldn’t use a damp cloth on art work.
hello! im wondering if this is safe to use indoors in a small apartment or if better ventilation is needed. ive never worked with anything like this before and im unsure of the protocol!
Dorland’s have very little smell, so is safe for indoor use. if you spray with a uv protection or similar first, they need to be used outside. just follow the instructions.
Is dit in plaats van vernis om te beschermen
Yes!
Hi liz, was wondering if you’ve tried the zest it wax? I’ve seen it on Amazon and it say brush on but I’d prefer to rub it in like the dorlands here….. I want to buy some wax but before I get the dorlands was just wandering if there is anything as good in the uk? Thanks :)
no, I haven’t used Zest It. I believe it doesn’t work in the same way, from discussions with other artists. in the UK you can try Gamlin too. I have been experimenting with Annie Sloane chalk paint wax. it works in the same way and is non yellowing. I cannot guarantee it’s archival properties, but I spray with varnish then wax. Way easier to get than Dorlands, but use at your own risk as it is not designed for fine art.
@@LizChadertonArt Ah thanks a lot, I’ve gone and ordered the dorlands now 🫢 but I’m defo going to check out the Annie Sloan chalk paint wax too…. Cheers 👍
Hi Liz, thank you so much this is very helpful! Is the wax suitable to use on 300gsm watercolour paper, or is it just canvas? X
yes, Dorlands can be used on paper. some artists mount paper onto a cradled board and seal it with wax so you don’t need glass. it looks great.
You made me soooo happy to show this.... i only want to now now what kind off canvas i can use for it? Wow how beautifull 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Hi Julia, you can get ready prepared canvas eg Fredric, or prepare your own with three layers of watercolour ground. Daniel Smith , QoR and Schminke make them. I have started a Facebook group called Watercolour on canvas, so do come and join if you want.
Hi there, love what you are doing with the wax. Could you please tell me how you made the textured surface that you painted on? Love it.
yes, it’s tissue paper stuck to the surface and then with watercolour ground. this film might be of interest ruclips.net/video/xmdGHdnnooo/видео.html
Liz is it normal that the wax keeps feeling a bit sticky? Or should i rub more and longer?
No, it should not feel sticky. do not buff it until it is dry. how long have you left it? and did you put it on thick?
@@LizChadertonArt 2 days maybe i have to wait longer and maybe my layer is to thick....i Will try again...thx 🙂
Liz thx for your help. Do i understand it well that if you used a good watercolour artist grade and with high lightfastnis and then you used only this wax on it at last. That must be good enough?
There is no uv protection in Dorland’s, so it would be just like using ordinary glass with watercolour. so yes high lightfastness pigment and don’t hang in direct light. a uv spray just gives an extra bit of protection.
@@LizChadertonArt thank you i understand. I have bought your lovely book 😍 thx for sharing your artwork
@@claudiajanse3773 my pleasure!
Can you also use Michael Harding Resin-Oil Wax Medium ? Yours you can not buy in the netherlands
I have never used that, so I do not know. An alternative I have used is a clear wax designed to go over chalk paint. I have used both Annie Sloane and Frenchic. Renaissance wax from the British museum used in picture framing is another. you are looking for a clear, non-yellowing cold wax medium which is acid neutral.
@@LizChadertonArt Maybe this helps. Michael Harding Resin-Oil Wax Medium PM 3 is a viscous painting medium of bleached, pure beeswax, mixed with Dammar resin and linseed oil (stand oil). Translated by google
I think the linseed oil makes that a no. Dorlands has beeswax and damar, but no oil. Sorry@@cathydoorten
@@LizChadertonArt Thank you
@@LizChadertonArt You can not buy a COLD WAX MEDIUM here. Also not on amazon
Can you use this on an acrylic painting? If so, how long should you let the painting dry before applying it? How long do you let a watercolor dry before using this product?
Hi, I believe you can use it on any medium, originally it was designed for oils. With acrylics it will depend entirely on the thickness. It must be fully dry before use. A thin acrylic would only need to dry overnight and that's the same for watercolour. Thicker acrylic will be longer to be safe.
@@LizChadertonArt Thank you!
Thank you very much for an very informative video for a useful product. Do you know if the wax can be warmed slightly before applying it? I think perhaps it could make spreading the medium easier. I believe it can also be used to seal watercolour on Yupo substrate. It is such a shame that the music makes hearing your pleasant voice difficult for those of us with hearing difficulties/hearing aids.
You don't need to warm it at all. The heat from your hand makes it easy to spread. I have never used it on yupo. I no longer add music! When I first started making films I did, but after comments have stopped. Sadly I cannot go back and remove it without remaking it. Sorry.
The music while you are speaking is distracting, but info is helpful.
Yes, I am not adding music to films now if there is any talking. It is distracting, I agree!
Great video 🙌🏻 I was wondering what canvases you use for watercolour?
Hi, I use ordinary canvas suitable for acrylic or oil but prepared with three thin coats of watercolour ground - heres a Video link
ruclips.net/video/j7yYyIrTESA/видео.html
On paper I do have a problem with the wax shifting the paint but as long as I use fixative first, it's OK.
some people use a fixative or uv spray, but I’ve never had a problem with paint moving. is it a particular colour or which paper do you use?
What brand do you use?
What brand do you use when you do this?
@@lunalunita5611 you mean, which brand of fixative? Not one specific. I look for one which is archival (won’t yellow) and have uv protection. I use matte. You could use gloss and the wax will take the shine off. In the US. People seem to like Krylon
Thank you very much!
Wonderful
Thank you. glad you liked it.
Just a suggestion, your background music is too loud and it reduces the effectiveness of the artist's explanation. It makes the video less enjoyable. Clarity of her voice is not good. It would be good to reduce the loudness of that background music.
If you look at my recent films I don't use music at all. I came to the same conclusion! When I started making films I liked it, but sadly I cannot remove it from older films without remaking them entirely
Was this a watercolor painting on paper attached to a canvas? Love this!
No, this watercolour painted onto a canvas prepared with watercolour ground. Daniel Smith, QoR and Schminke make them. It makes the canvas slightly absorbent, not exactly like paper, but more similar.
@@LizChadertonArt Is this the watercolour ground that gives texture to the surface?
@@Leonardo.de.A no, I had attached tissue paper for texture then put on watercolour ground. Take a look here for the process ruclips.net/video/T1FyB9Kq4hg/видео.html
Aha. I asked if canvas could be waxed and found my answer here.
yes! they are lovely 😀
Beautiful! Thank you so much! I love your real time videos....do you paint pineapples?
Ha, ha, never painted a pineapple in my life! Dare I ask why a 🍍?
Oops I need to be more clear.... have you painted a picture of a pineapple? ☺️I can imagine a pineapple in your style of painting! I’m so intrigued by your style. Looking forward to reading your book!

Do you sell your original work?
yes! all my originals currently for sale can be found on www.lizchaderton.co.U.K.
@@LizChadertonArt are these prints or originals? I ask because the site reads based on your paintings.
@@phillipstroll7385 all originals, I don’t sell prints of my work.
Interesting and informative but music is so annoying. Sorry, but thought you might want to know.
yes, I now know about the music and don’t add it to new videos. back then it seemed like a good idea.
Is this uv resistant
Hi - reading the packaging it makes no claim to UV resistance. You could always use a coat of UV resistant fixative first (Krylon/Ironlak for example), then wax for the sheen and protection.
Got it. Thank you
