    Five Songs by Prince Albert
    Komm, Liebchen, Komm
Come, love, come! The night is bright,
    And cool winds flutter enticingly,
I want so much on the gentle waves
To rock you in our narrow boat
    Come, love, come!
Come, love, come! The night is calling us
My heart beats faithful and noble
Your mother is asleep and your lover awake
    What danger could there be?
    Come, love, come!
    Die Letzten Worte eines Bardes
    The bard’s fire is extinguished
The flow of song is over
    At many a joyous feast
The soft lyre sounds no more
Soon I shall rest silent in the grave!
You hear the winds, recklessly hurrying
Through my strings, once so precious,
And passing, they awaken in me
    Sounds of bygone days,
This is the last, most lovely ray
From my sun, which at its setting
Shines brightly to me for the last time.
And as it slowly dips into the
    purple-tinted flood
So I slowly witness the withering
    Of the sick, long-broken heart
The torture of anguish is finished.
And as the last golden glow of the sun
Once again magically transfigures the old man
And as it trembles over the threshold,
So there is silence in my heart’s shrine.
    Gruss an den Bruder
Though my sorrow has been silent so long,
    It wakes again today,
And rouses you from sweet sleep
Through the tender breath of sounds
and though we are so far apart
A Zephyr will carry it to you!
And it will whisper so softly then and ask
If you too think of your brother here
    Of home, of the North
Of the quiet joys of youth,
It will aerily resound in you:
    Direct your gaze this way!
    An einen Boten
If you bump into my girl
    Say hello from me
When she asks how I'm getting along
    Say "on both feet!"
When she asks if I'm ill
    Tell her I've died
And when she starts to weep
    Say I'll be there tomorrow
    Einsamkeit
As a soul I wandered free and alone,
    God and I always close
I think and feel a certain absence
    I collect what I perceive.
Life is disturbed by human struggles:
    Wars, love, fortune and pain.
We strive to lift ourselves victorious
    Heavenward from the earth.
But the heart has now grown tired
And it quietly longs for inner peace
And sacred solitude calls us back
    With harmonies of comfort.
