tbh sidechain takes out the punch, youre ducking all that initial audio and making it quieter, this though you can keep the punch, which is usually in the higher frequencies, while reducing the clash of kick and 808, as the clash typically happens in lower frequencies. its a W that youve been doing it
@@rlyBeats that makes sense. It's worked for me but was thinking I might just be taking a less than perfect short cut so it's nice to get some validation on that technique 👍
do this, then you add a peak controller to the kick and have it set to the low eq part of the 808, so whenever the kick hits the 808 ducks in the range to give the kick more punch :)
This is seriously a game changer. The concept of EQ-ing has always been daunting, I recently watched a video on how it all works. I still didn’t want to jump into 808’s though. Ima make a beat right now, thanks king 💯
Jump into them 808s and make sum fire. I believe you will. I have an ear for sounds and I’m pretty good at mixing, but the 808s I tend to struggle with at times. Nah fuck that, dive in bro. I’m learning the only way to get over that fear is to just go at it. This is a great tutorial so I hope you go craaazy with the 808s!
or jus sidechain the kick to the 808 using a bell curve and only have it duck 2-3 db on the certain frequency you want the kick to hit, so when the 808 is playin by itself it’ll have all its power.
this works but turn it off for when the 808 is playing w out the kick, also use dynamic eq so the cut in the 808 is only dipping at the start when the kick would hit (if u have an 808 w sm punch). tdr nova has a free eq plugin that has dynamic eq it's rly good
this means alot bro i been sidechaining for hella long and its fire but i always felt like it was a more complicated way to do something thats pretty simple,, whenever my fav trap producers would do mixing tutorials they would never sidechain their shit and it always sounded fire and this must be how,, thank u for saving me infinite time in the future of tweaking fucking FL limiter which i dont gotta do anymore
I started doing this since I learned it instead of side chaining. The side chaining I feel let the kick hit harder cuz that's all that's playing but eq-ing makes it way more smooth and clean and boom smack on Soft clipper on the Master and it's Drake ready.
I’ve been doing this since day 1 basically, but usually I do bigger cuts and boosts (5-6 dB) gonna try being more subtle from now on and see how it works out
Thought this was the first step to side-chaining? Mixing then processing the mix through side chain.. mixing wont change when and how hard the kick hits or when the 808 reacts to the kick.
@@rlyBeats valid. When I’m starting I usually just like to add a little stutter or something at the end of my hat patterns and then tune them up more later

i have a issue where my kick is distorting my mix but my mix is not clipping. ive tried soft clipping and doing a peak control on the 808. even when i turn down the kick alot it still distorts. (i have also tried many different kicks thinking it could be just the kick im choosing but its not)
I feel like this just makes your low end muddy and on a huge sound system playing in clubs this would sound terrible. Your 808 might have punch built in but that's what the kick is for. But I thought of a way to do this without making the 808 sound weak maybe you can use a dynamic eq like maximus to sidechain only the low end of the 808
@@mc67muzik56 nah cuz then ur 808 is weak asf when not being sidechained just better to sidechain or atleast sidechain only the lows (full sidechaining preferably)
@@thisoneguy7096 if I were to sidechain the lows, then where would I cut into the freq range? I wanna assume 60hz but I wanna know where you would start by default

If you boost a frequency on the kick by 2db, reduce the same frequency on the 808 by 2.5-3db.
Yo this is what I do too. Never really saw anyone else doing it I just started cause I was too lazy to side chain lmao.

Sounds so much better than limiter side chain or doing an automated side chain
Loving these tutorials bro! I'm learning a lot ❤️

ong. sidechaining loses that punch, kills the vibe. this tho is goated
@@rlyBeats Yea the contrast between the 808 and kick doesn't hit as hard overall. I think Eq is easier anyways

Soft clipper on the master???
it depends on the sound you're using, but your 808 should always duck under when your kick is hitting
no. this is just no
@@rlyBeats its not like your the 808 should get totally muted man 😭 it's just a lil decrease in volum
I 😊 prefer to peak control and invert on the kick linked to low band eq on the 808. Controls frequency and amount of ducking...

you can use a dynamic Eq as well

I have a question:
Why didn't you completely cut off the 808 frequency in those "kick" ranges?

What I always wondered in the Eq, does it matter if you move the numbers or is it just about the line itself that you adjust ?
