- The BMW i8 is a clever plug-in hybrid, mid-engine supercar that was ahead of its time at launch. It wasn’t ever the fastest or most capable car in its price range but it offers a unique and interesting take on the supercar, while also packing stunning good looks and a bit of all-electric range. First launched as a series production car back in 2014, the first-ever plug-in hybrid sports car from BMW has quickly become the most successful performance vehicle in the world.
The BMW i8 Coupe and i8 Roadster are the ultimate technological milestones of the BMW Group, blending in a spectacular and futuristic design with state-of-the-art engineering. The reason why the i8 is so important to BMW is the fact that it laid the foundation for future electrification of the entire range of models.
In this video, we explore the interior and exterior design of the BMW i8, we talk about its specs and show you a few hidden secrets.

Best BMW design of the last few decades? Would you buy one?
100% the i8 still looks like an object out of the future, I absolutely adore it!
Needs a successor
I looked at a lease return I8 years ago and it didn't age well in black. Right now you can get one as low as 60k. It would have to be a second car since this can't even hold much luggage if you want to road trip this.
Ok, would you rather get a used i8 or a Audi R8 or an AMG gt coupe. They are all about the same price.
@@stevelouie5928 if you want great looks & above average performance, go i8. If you want great performance & above average looks, go GT or R8.
I bought one in August 2022, a 2019 Sophisto Grey Roadster with 15,000 miles, and I will probably never sell it. All the talk by commenters here about parts and cost to fix, etc. is overblown. Talk to me about the cost of running and maintaining any Ferrrari, Maserati, etc before throwing those stones at the i8. This will be a collector, especially the Roadster with only 3884 of them built. This car is crazy fun to drive and turns heads. Most people that write negative comments have never driven one. I know I a lot of folks who totally change their mind after they actually spend some time in one. Just saying.
Facts! Just picked mine up a few months ago. Exactly the same. Sophisto grey, coupe, 15,000 miles 1 previous owner and I absolutely love it!
How much u guys pay? Looking to get same.. grey roadster
I just bought, and i also absolutely LOVE IT
@@michanowak2106what's the price mate? Wanna get some!
Agree I only have a 07 530i and got to see one of these in person didn’t get in didn’t get a ride and just fell in love with the art of it
Bought a used 2014 with 50k miles,
3 years now, only issue was replacing door shocks.. drove it everyday
throughout spring and summer.. loving it
Does it still turn heads?
Great video Andrei. And thanks again for your presentation the other week. 👍
I own a i8 Roadster beside a 992 and a Portofino. For me it is the most exciting car of all. The chief tecnician of BMW called the i8 the most innovative car they ever made. It is not as sharp as the 992 and not as powerfull as the Ferrari but it gives you the feeling of driving a concept car, a milestone in BMW history. With 3884 pieces the i8 Roadster is more rare then a Z8.
Congrats! Never sell it
That’s a nice garage. Hope you’re enjoying them :) . Wish you lots of safe travels.
Dope garage! I'd choose the Portfino. Enjoy 😎
I have a Roadster I bought about 6 months ago. My best friend has one as well, same as mine. He is in the car business and also personally owns a lot of supercars, ie Ferrari, R8, NSX, a few Porsche models, etc. and guess which one he likes to drive most? Same as you, the i8.
Double doctor? Nice
People go crazy still when I pull up in the i8 💯
Got one and love it! Not selling at any price!
Good. It's a keeper
I own a 2016 i8 and absolutely love it.. It's on the way to 50k miles and has no issues. I just keep up with regular maintenance intervals. The car drives great, it's fast enough. It's still a headturner. Before I forget the white interior wtf was bmw thinking, also bmw what's with the trash leather on the dashboard and the cheap paint used on the car. Another drawback lack of aftermarket parts, but that come with the rarity. In my biased opinion it's still a good buy. My father hated the car now drives mine every chance he gets.. It grew on him. It could grow on you.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Update just hit 50k last week and my 12v battery is dead.. Im having a hard time finding the right H4 battery so that sucks.. When the battery dies and you open the door with the key the door will not close. Also once you push the ignition it, the cluster is faded and the car won't shut off when you try to.. You will also see every warning under the sun so it is unsettling. Will update how things are once battery is changed.
@@Vladidon any updates? been thinking about getting one but I'm concerned about the reliability of it
@@nitina3429 The car is now at 50821k miles and up and running.. No issues, so I would say reliability is good.. At the end of the day it's luck of the draw when you are getting a used car..
@@Vladidon Did you change it under the warranty? I’m looking into an 2016 aswell with 60k miles , I really want it but the battery issue is putting me off
I love them. But I think the battery goes out of warranty after 7 years ... Considering the hammering the the Taycan is taking now in the secondhard market, I guess this will impact all high end EV's/ Hybrids. I'd wait until they keep depreciating to sub $25,000. At least then if you need to spend $15,000 on a new battery ( if available ? ) the total cost would be acceptable for a really, really cool car
As my gf will need a car for just driving around town basically I am really thinking about the i8 for her. It has even enough electric only range for going back and forth to work. The other option (and ofc the more "smart" one) would be an i3s, which would be roughly half the price of the i8 here in Germany.
I love them both and prices came down quite a bit, but esp. the i8 coupe is now on a very interesting level, so that i am really starting to consider it. I loved it from the first time I saw it, to be able to own one now is really really awesome! It is to me, kind of the M1 of the newer times, design is now 10 years old and still amazing - that goes for both of them actually!
What do you guys think? i3s or i8? i8 would be also great for road trips then, i3 more of the city vehicle obviously...
I'd love the roadster tho, but that's still a bit too pricey...
Other cars in the garage would be G87 M2 and probably a E91 330d (for me as km b*tch) besides an M3 E46 convertible :D
Or skipping the E46 and take the roadster instead? Ahhhh, too many choices :D:D
Very different cars. The i3 is clearly an all electric car and better suited for commutes and such. Definitely more space inside too.
Your jus gonna buy her a i8 😂💯your a good man
did you buy her the I8? 😂
@@strozierkid hahaahahahaa
We need more man like you😅😅🥳
After being broke for years, i switched careers, and I'm finaly making real money. I want to get a certified used i8, not the roadster. Is it worth it to get one at $70k or so? Will there be an option to replace the battery pack?
what career did you switch to? i wanna make money too
@@sefo_houseko get into IT
Nice submariner!
So is it worth buying or not? What about the 10 year battery warranty expiring? Expensive replacement. Would appreciate a more in depth analysis of if this is worth buying.
Ive owned a 2017 i8 for the last 2 years. I also thought same about a full replacement but after plenty of reading, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever need to replace a full battery in the i8. If anything you may need to replace a cell which is a fraction of cost to a full battery module.
@@maxcolmer3243 Where did you do your research, I would like to do a lot more before pulling the trigger on one. What problems have you had in those 2 years? Appreciate the response.
Is it still on sale?
It was sold, I asked
The next time bmw makes this car, it better comes out with the power to match it. This thing should have 0-60 of at least 2s or they shouldn't bother making it.
Hopefully they will do an all electric one
@@bmwblog do u think the "i8m" will come out?
If only this car is full electric. That would be a great bmw ev car 😞
They should hire someone from bez to design dashboard for them😢😢
Can you upgrade the battery to atleast give you 100 miles range 😭😭🙏🏻🙏🏻
You can't
Love the i8 and am considering purchasing one. Unfortunately, a “dealer review” won’t disclose any of the pitfalls and repair issues. And, some other reviews are “doom and gloom”. Owner comments below are a great plus!!
Grow some balls
BMW had a good start with the i sub brand and then lost their way. So now the EV business is still in shambles and the design seems to be getting uglier by the model. Sad. Not buying any new BMW till they fix their designs.
Yes, I wish they pushed more back in the day. Lots of opportunities lost
The car is good looking, but the potential for major reliability issues and poor parts availability in the long run makes it a bad buy. Its also way to expensive for what your buying
You can get a low mile used example for mid 60s. That’s almost 1/3 msrp
@@argenisperez7810 and why do you think that’s so? Exactly the reasons mentioned. Reliability and parts ruined this car opposed to a 911, Maserati, AMGs or anything else for that matter
@@A_Guy123 Maserati? One of the least reliable and expensive to fix brands?
@@jacobmulligan5962 I mean if you can’t work on it yourself I guess it can get costly. That and anything coding/software can hurt the pockets but I never had a problem with my old one besides depreciating like crazy.
I would not touch the i8 with a 10 foot pole 😊 nice design but reliability and long term parts availability and support is worrisome, couple i8 horror stories on YT 😊
Any reliability issues in particular?
@@bmwblog have u heard of any?
Got 2015 i8. No issues at all.. just pure pleasure.
hard to get a representative sample couple horror stories, couple good experiences.. who knows on average what is the reliability and part availability, we know very few units were produced. Glad to see some have had good experiences 😀
@@andreh.dupuis8475 so you are just saying you heard but don't know. lo lwtf
😭😭😭😭 i want it.
There should be plenty on the used car market
@@bmwblog
I believe that it is wrong to buy any used electrical device, so how about if this device is a car .
only 28 km ? the electric option is just a waste!
It's a pretty old car and at the time ,the battery tech was not great
More of a PS5 thing
With cars like the i7 and bmws electric suvs… HARD PASS on this hybrid
Very different cars though
XXXTENTACION had the car and passed away
