The BMW i8 is the Prius of the supercar world... if you consider it a supercar. It has a carbon fiber chassis, doors that go up, insane good looks, but all of that is coupled with a hybrid system powered by a 3 cylinder range extender. Whether you think it's a supercar or not, I bought this one from @RichRebuilds because I've wanted one since I drove it 3 years ago!

Loved to see my old home-made engine cover and carbon overlay on this video. Yes, that glass is heavy, as I wanted something that replicated windshield glass so it could withstand the heat and vibration. It's hard to line it up to reinstall it because after I cut the big hole in the middle to mount the glass, it warped the stamped metal that was original to the i8. I hope you guys got it on there without too much difficulty. I built that in my garage from a concept because everyone wanted to see the engine at car meets. It was an honor to give this to Rich and I'm so happy to see it again!
I think people got Samcrac and Uncle Rich mixed up. Rich literally has certified mechanics working on his cars.
Whereas Samhack is just a mechanic in a bottle wannabe. 😅

I think the weird part might have been the noise maker system to make it sound like a muscle car. He may have disabled it but I think it had a sub in it and things. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what that thing is.

Had the -100HP version of that I3 in my Mini. Same filter setup, though it and the drain were behind easy to open flaps on the undertray. And at least on BMWs you can check the oil level over and over; on some Porsches I've worked on you have to wait some period of time before you can check again.

I started to fall in love with this car in your last video of it. Then, i looked up the price. That's c8 price range. I LOVE modern high tech looking vehicles like Lambos etc but I would have been find with a 4 cylender in it, no carbon fiber and a affordable price. Oh and JR, Tell Car Ninja that we love him, atleast I do. Wish I could spend some days in his shop just learning. I just found out he has a YouTUbe.
I didn't figure Rich would sell you a rusted out vehicle without disclosing it to you.
Well look at that, JR got a car with working door/hood struts. LOL Pretty cool on what you found and that just says Rich is a good guy....and a funny guy. Love it when things work out for everyone! Sweet ride!!

Dear @watchjrgo, those lights in the door/mirrors that let you see where you are putting your feet when you get out are called puddle lights. Keep up the great work!
These and the i3 throw tons of random codes when the 12v battery is low or weak. It's common to just replace them first before trying to troubleshoot random codes... especially if the 12v battery is over 3 years old.
Yep computers act very strange without proper voltage, including a short in other components of the car messes with the whole system.
The i3 is a good buy generally too BTW. Also under rated.
@@andrewnorris5415 As long as it's not an early year model... like my 2015 BEV that has become a semi-permanent resident of my garage - since the drive motor bearings went bad. Known defect/design flaw, yet BMW won't come to my assistance with Goodwill help... though they have provided a replacement motor free of charge for many others with the exact same problem... saying that 94k miles is too old... not worth repairing.
Really nice… happy everything worked out… i started with a coupe myself, now i got a roadster. I probably overpaid but the roadster is next level and i love it
The part that you were wondering what it is that is like an exhaust it is the active sound enhancer. Basically a speaker inside it and what you thought was an O2 censor is the wires for it.
Can I just say that Johnny is so cool to let you come in and work in his shop. He never seems annoyed and is always smiling. A good friend to have!!

I hope the car shude be great to you . I smile that 3 cylinder motor remainds me abut SAAB 93 in 60;s tow stroke 850 cc but it was a winner of Monte Carlo Rally 1962 and 1963 and no turbo 😄

I remember when my dad contemplated getting one of these. Ended up in a Jag F Type R instead. I think he made the right choice.
Both are excellent choices, big fan of the F-Type obviously! 💯
@WatchJRGo my dad liked them so much that he had a 2014 convertible type R and replaced it with a 2016 coupe 2 years later! Then he went 2016 Mercedes AMG GTS and now has a 2014 Ferrari 458 spider. He's got pretty good taste in cars.
@BirdLawyer yeah he sure has, the 458 is the coolest and the best ferari ever, I'm semi jealous for your dad but I'm sure you're happy for your dad. Hope you get your dream car one day

@BirdLawyer thanks, will certainly hope so, my dream car has always been the w204 c63 and an s2000, more on the c63 cause of that 6.2 na v8 the best sounding engines ever, especially with a modified exhaust. I donk know about the s2000 but it would be an epic summer car with the top down. And the vtec yooo
I’m glad it is in such good shape - but then I didn’t think for a second that Rich would sell a lemon - he is a really decent guy. They are cool but I cannot get out of head the potential fail (high) and cost of (even higher) of the i8. It definitely isn’t a long term keeper because failure of much of the tech on that will guarantee financial ruin.
I wonder why people would assume the car would be put together wrong when Rich is so OCD on cars he likes. Hmm... I wonder 🤔

Great car and great example! See High Peak Autos who reviewed a similar fine example recently on YT. A dealer very close to where I live in the UK. You really can daily these. Could be expensive in a crash is my only concern with all that carbon and one off parts. But in a way that means they are more likely to owned by more careful drivers with a full claims bonus. This one seems to have been rear ended. Good repair it seems!

Does this shop in Wichita do module reprogramming? I'm changing the drive motor and inverter (EME) on my 2015 i3 to one from a 2018 salvage yard donor, and I know it won't be happy. I may also have to swap the eDME to the later one... KLE may also need to be swapped... but apparently any modules swapped will need to have the VIN re-coded or ISN SK code...?
I had a BMW 1series with basically that same engine and I always thought it seemed a bit stupid to have the engine running just to check the oil level because if its too low then that surely can't be goo for the engine
BTW, the clean tail pipe on the rear (driver's side) is the exhaust speaker. It makes a sound when you accelerate for the outside of the car.
How lucky I was with the i8, I went to order one when it was announced and received literature and updates of when the first RHD one would be available. When it was announced that deliveries had started to the first UK customers I telephoned to find my delivery date and they said they had no record of my order, but I could order one for delivery in 18 months to 2 years. This was unacceptable as I expected to get on of the very first ones, it turned out that I was saved from something with high depreciation, so it was luck I was saved from i8 ownership.

I had to inspect one of these recently. I am 6'5" and 290 lbs. Getting in and out of it was a nightmare. The door sill is crazy wide and the seat is not built for taller guys. I made sure there were no cameras around as I folded/fell in and out of this car.
My wife is 4’11’’ and we all had a great laugh watching her get out of one of these😂
BMW brought one of these to the tech school I work at. They told us that Europe requires electric vehicles to make noise for safety reasons. So the extra "tail pipe" is a speaker for this system.

That was in my lineup of cars I was considering. Love the fact you don’t see many but the lack of power/performance for the money was a no for me.
My 2002 tahoe has a rough idle once it gets to operation temperature , I've changed plugs , wires and the sending unit in the fuel tank ,,, nothing helped , it's random but only when the truck is warm like 190 - 210 degrees any thoughts ?
I think this car is so under appreciated. It's going to be super valuable in 30y ( when you can still drive it in e mode)

Did you get the special training to open the front hood? Look around RUclips for a video from a few years ago. Apparently, it’s easy to break the hood while opening it.

Yup, like the engine rebuild of the Suzuki Sidekick, then adding a kickass stereo system into it. You could really see what he and his buddies were taking apart and follow along.
Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I think most i8 s don't come with the "Display key" nor the digital readouts on the steering wheel like the one in your car. That's an expensive and rare option you have on your i8, specially a 2014 (first year model). Does your i8 also have the Laser headlights? Because that would be awesome.
Uncle Rich has a distinctive laugh especially with Sam, but looks like his cars are really good.
Hope it comes up healthy but pretty sure Rich had gone through most of it but we'll see.
I just don’t get how people don’t realize that rich does things on his channel as entertainment/trigger people. The guy actually puts things together right when it’s a keeper project and not one just for RUclips/throw away. Plus I am sure more of his videos are based on test fit put together stuff and once the test drive is done he fixes them right off camera. Now again some projects are just that, projects that he just is doing and for views with no intent to keep and or is his personal day to day driver that’s meant to be abused.

I think you're missing of the door seals on the i8 that line between the fender and the CF body.

When this car came out I think everyone was thinking this will be a used car nightmare, but so far seems like the best used BMW to buy. My top BMW on my list, they are actually fun to drive too.

Looks good on a lift, and at all other times as well. If you got the money or skill to keep it up and running, seems like a great car to own forever (or at least until they creep up in price, also if you can keep it running).

Looks like a safe bet. You get the comfort of an EV and when the battery gets old, you can rely on the ICE. Also, the carbon fiber must give a very different driving experience. I'd love to own one some day.
I’ve rented the i8 on two occasions. Once with my wife celebrating my 40th in Vegas.
Then again with my wife and two boys for a family reunion road-trip in Vegas.
It’s a phenomenal car. Between my brothers and I we also had an Audi R8, a Corvette C7, a Maserati Ghibli and a Porsche Panamera but the BMW i8 was BY FAR the best car to drive, the most confidence inducing, had the best sound system, the coolest NAV, the heads up display, amazing scissor doors, head turning looks and an overall much superior experience.
The comfort mode makes it totally quiet and the suspension becomes noticeably softer.
I absolutely loved it.
Owning one would be so much fun but I would fear the maintenance costs.
I already have an X5 and an e39 540 6 speed that I’ve owned for 18 years and keeping those up and paying for travel soccer is about all I can handle.
You bought pats i8. Everything is perfect. That guy knows everything about this car.

It's kind of crazy how some of the tech they have in the lower end models were already present in the high end models for BMW lol.
Measuring oil level on BMWs is soooo annoying. Wish they would just give you a dip stick. At least yours shows a percentage... my E90 only says "measuring" to keep ya guessing on when it will finally give a reading

At least you don't have the near impossible project ,the McLaren P1 that Tavarish has to deal with... it remains to be seen if he can pull it off...or if it will bankrupt him.

Too much carbon broken. If he doesn't drain the water from that engine soon, it will be ruined. If the battery is toast, that alone will kill it and even if he rebuilds it perfectly, it will still be a salvage title, so it probably won't ever be worth $2 million again.

I still want to know how Tavarish gets around the "Certificate of Destruction"-branded title on the P1. Even if it is fixed, it won't be able to be registered again in Florida.
In many states, insurance companies are required to pay 100% of the cost of a broken windshield. I know that is true in NJ and SC.
Is it possible to swap that mini engine for a Mazda rx7 or rx8 engine??
That clean exhaust pipe it's not part of the exhaust system. It's a speaker to simulate engine sounds.
