    A drafting brush or a Swiffer sheet work well for removing eraser crumbs from the work table. When cleaning the white gutters on a back cover, I usually place a backer board under the cover to support the edge, and place another backer board on top of the cover along the inside edge of the gutter, to protect the colored inks while I use a block eraser to clean the gutter.

      Dan, Excellent alternatives to the way i do things. For heavier cleaning jobs i do use a drafting brush rather than my hand for removal of the eraser crumbs as i work. I find a cotton round is also a very good tool for last wipe down of the hobby matt before i start working--the cotton fibers seem to entrap tiny particles that would otherwise like to stay on the matt. Great suggestions for folks to try!

    Another great video, Dr. Paul! I like how you got into a lot of the intricacies of the dry cleaning, and the different types of erasers in particular. I especially like the use of the smaller diameter erasers. Those are very handy I will be making some purchases myself over those. Video again!😊

    I use a board underneath to work on the overhang instead of pulling the page back also a board on top when erasing around the border lined up to keep the colored areas protected from accidentally rubbing against the colored edges

    thanks for the video , Dr. Paul . i've watched enough of your videos to buy a pressing machine and the tools to try on my own comics , now ! here in Vancouver , i never found comic bags until the summer of 1976 . so , all of my comics i bought from 1971 until 1976 i kept in wax paper . it did the job of protecting my books well enough , but , some do need dry cleaning and pressing . i'm not confident enough to try a water bath , though most of my books that i bought new do not need a water bath . Huzzah , Sir !

      Love me some Luke Cage! His first appearance in Hero for Hire 1 is one of my favorate Bronze Age intros.

      @@DrPaulKosnik Ya Luke Cage and Blade were Marvel's versions of SHAFT. Which was huge in 71. I remember buying TOD 1-#70 and Luke Cage #1 off the local Mom & Pop corner stores. Loved both those #1 covers and series. Same with Marvel Premiere, Spotlight, and team up titles. Epic time to be a comic book fan. My favorite era was like 68-85 mainly. Probaly the most was 68-76. Tons of first issues and titles to try and find and buy.

    Posture and avoiding hunching over is my biggest issue while cleaning and probably why I haven’t done it in a while. Cleaning can be very rewarding and calming but the posture I put myself in can spoil that. I’ll try to focus on getting into a better position with the proper tools.

      Dan I’m sorry to hear that! It may seem silly for me to talk about but so many people (especially young guys) don’t give this enough thought. Try a magnifying ring light or perhaps some of the magnifying glasses to help see the work while maintaining good posture. 👍🏽

    Is the treatment acceptable for glossy modern age comics with soiling?

    • @DrPaulKosnik
      @DrPaulKosnik  7 месяцев назад +1

      WeWuzzer, generally, yes. I change a few things up when i'm working on modern books. They pick up fingerprints readily, so i would consider wearing gloves. If you work on them without gloves but use caution so as not to leave fingerprints. Also the gloss is less robust and easier to remove. So everything i state about using light pressure so as not to disrupt the gloss is more true with modern books. Regularly look at the cover of your book in raking light to check the gloss. If you do disrupt the gloss a bit, buffing the cover with a cotton round can restore the gloss to a certain degree. If in doubt, practice on some dollar bin books of the same era before working on your modern treasures. Good luck!
