- Showcase Comics 60 Episode 3: Dry Cleaning Back Cover.
In this video series we evaluate this key silver age comic book--Showcase Comics #60 from February of 1966, the first silver age appearance of the Spectre, for clean and press and submission to CGC. In today’s video I dry clean the back cover, and discuss the recommendation of the Library of Congress to use clean, dry, bare hands to handle paper!
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

Always a pleasure to see you work 😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much, appreciate you joining the premiere and your kind feedback as always!
Another great content video Dr. Paul! Looking forward to the next episode!😊
Thanks Cap’n!
Love the editing in your videos, even in simpler videos like this. The previous work summaries, the close-ups on the cotton rounds, the vertical pans, the zoom outs to see the bigger picture. All very professional looking. It really sets your channel apart.
Thank you Adrift! I put quite a bit of energy into videography and editing, and i hope it shows. Plan to upgrade my camera next month, looking forward to being able to zoom in even tighter when necessary without loosing sharp details.
Appreciate your knowledge and sharing. Always learning something
Thank you and glad to hear it Greens!
thanks again for more great tips on dry cleaning . your videos are always very cogent Dr . Paul . can't wait to see the document cleaning powder work !
Thanks Rick! We improved this one quite a bit. I'm anxious to see what CGC thinks of the end product!
I like to prep for some book cleaning by just putting on some alcoholic hand disinfectant: oils are minimised, nice and dry. Nothing replaces hand feel. I've looked at videos of conservationists in museums and they use bare hands - and I always take my advice from them.
Such great advice about looking at the tip of the eraser - it will show you what's happening!
another tip for viewers: look at the pressure that being applied to the edge when cleaning at the 8:10 point. I personally use a board to press down on the book, but the point is, the edge is dangerous and need to be tensioned to be safely cleaned
Great feedback--thanks!
Thanks for the video, Dr. Paul. Since getting back into the hobby a couple of years ago, I've been cleaning and pressing my original owner collection from the 1980s. I never use gloves either, *except* for some indie publisher comics (Pacific, First, etc.) that are very susceptible to fingerprints, even if I've just freshly washed my hands. But I hate having to put them on as I feel clumsier and more likely to damage the book.
Spot on with how I feel as well, and I’ve had many jobs in biotech and in the clinic, including performing delicate surgeries, in which I’ve had plenty of time to get used to wearing gloves. They are generally just too grabby for comic book paper.
Great info….. I also wear gloves on modern only. I want to feel the paper and possibly anything on or under the cover. But, got to admit I learned this from you.
@@doncarter9467 it’s much more pleasant to feel the paper as well!
…..and lastly after all this hard work we’ll send this book off to cgc where they’ll put a giant ding in the spine while holdering it. Thanks for watching everybody.
Boy this series has really brought out the CGC haters! This one will be back soon, we’ll get to see if your prediction was correct or not. 👍🏽
@@DrPaulKosnik sorry banana-gate has really got me fired up ha ha
I use a small strip of painters tape to clear the eraser grime.
Interesting Vu--do you use the sticky side or the non-sticky side up?
@@DrPaulKosnik I use the non sticky side up. I just taped a piece to the desk and have been wiping away since.
@@vuluu2816 great idea!
I never used gloves, never felt like i should when handling a comic. You might miss the subtle feel of catching a corner or something, or otherwise sticking to it.
@@BigMoneyGripMCV that is exactly what the Library of Congress and other conservation institutions discovered-gloves lead to more damage due to inability of the conservator to get tactile feedback while working with documents!
Does CGC put the books under a microscope and bigger lights to evaluate the condition of comics?😊
Johnny, not a microscope as far as i know, but definitely a magnifying glass!
@@DrPaulKosnik Yep, I have a Hulk#180 with a defect that isn't viable to the naked eye - they have to be using magnification (possible on a screen view headwear like I do)
The people who say "wear gloves" are probably wearing gloves to type on a keyboard too.
🤣🤣🤣
