Haha thanks (I think)!!! When I rewatched the videos I realized that it is quite relaxing and satisfying to watch. It’s also a relaxing process to preform. I’m one step away from going full ASMR with a giant pro mic and exaggerated cleaning noises!
This is an ESSENTIAL video for anyone serious about the hobby- I've picked up your cleaning kit and am practicing on some 80s books now.. Thanks for sharing and your hard work!
Thank you for doing such a great video. I haven't yet gotten into cleaning or pressing my books. Im a bit nervous I will destroy them. I know this is a crazy request but could you do a video where you show cleaning fails (in other words, what happens if you apply too much pressure with the eraser? Or what happens (when pressing if you pull the book out too soon or cook it with too high a temperature? In other words, how do you know when you've gone too far with any of these techniques?). Thanks again for the great tutorial!!
I'm from Melbourne in Australia. We only have one or two people here in Australia who press and clean. I love learning and attention to detail. I think this is something I need to learn & I think I might be able to find a niche in the market. As well as learn a new skill set. Very informative, great content!
I am impressed! Extra impressed with the tomb of Dracula! Well played. Seen many but you sir are a master of your craft! Do you also clean and press other people’s books!
as im watching this i keep think how it looks under a microscope 🤣 nothing to do with cleaning it but it keeps popping up in my head . oh wow thats awesome you know what the grading is before they send it back man you a professional . ✊️🙏
Mainly I do it because the books are easier to handle safely with the backing board. The backing boards also hold up fine against the humidity, however, the card stock does not. Some people open the book and humidify flat. That works as well but I like to fit 2 books in the tank at the same time. With the mister, I use 2 minutes face up, flip, and then another minute with the back up. Thanks for watching!
Start with dozens of $1-2 books from the same era before moving your way up to a book you really care about. You have to put in the practice time and it will pay dividends!
Great video! Very informative and I enjoy the detail that you go into with your cleaning. I'm also a member of KaptainMyke's Facebook page. A good group to be a part of to learn how to clean and press. Keep posting more videos!
Thanks Rich! I am a member of the FaceBook page as well, and we have chatted on there before! I just added the links to KaptainMyke's CPR book, website, and the FaceBook page to the post. I am happy to state that everything I know about cleaning and pressing was learned from the CPR book and the share experience and expertise of the members of the FaceBook page.
@@epicomicologycomics You're welcome! Yes, I believe we have chatted before! Can you message me on FB to confirm who you are? It is a great Facebook page and I love seeing the before and after pictures. I especially enjoy the detailed posts which go step by step and include the tools and temperature used for cleaning and pressing. It's very helpful seeing videos from other pressers and their techniques. Keep posting! Thanks!
Joe, almost all the items I use can be found on the KaptainMykes webpage complete with Amazon links. Hope that helps! Let me know if there is something you couldn't find!
I enjoyed your approach to the dry cleaning method. It's always good to see it being done. I've started some cleaning myself recently and I have a reasonable supply of test books to try on. I am seriously considering a heat press as well. My era of books are the Marvel Silver Age. What do you think of Absorene clay? I did notice you use the Absorene sponge. I just bought a two pack with both versions. I've also tried my hand with the Mr. Clean magic eraser, which isn't bad but be careful of ink rub!
looks clean, but you need to clean the entire cover, don't put clothes under the bed so mom thinks your room is clean. Use the absobene pad on the entire cover, slower yes, but it works, then use the white eraser for touch up. white eraser final resort as it is a strong tool.
Yup! I was going to say 🤪 That cover was pretty clean to begin with. Also, I only use the eraser on the white areas with minimal pressure. Thanks for watching!
Can you give me a ballpark figure for how long learning this skill would take from a complete beginners starting point ? And how many $1 comics would you recommend acquiring and practicing on before graduating onto the more expensive books like the ASM #316 above. Any advice or feedback you can give me would be much appreciated. Great video and channel by the way. Thanks
Honestly, it really depends on the person. If you have high attention to detail, are generally more technical/analytical, and like hobbies like this then the learning curve will be less steep. Also, the more you read before getting into it the better. Learn from others' mistakes so you don't repeat them yourself. I would say that after you have pressed 15-20 books of each era (modern, silver, bronze etc) then you will have a good handle on whats going on. You have to get use to your press and understand how the time, pressure, and temp affect the results. After you have the basics down then you can start to learn how to address more difficult issues. In all, maybe 3-6 months of practice before you will feel confident to handle a high dollar book. Again, that's just a ballpark...
It's okay. My videos just are not for you. This is RUclips not TikTok, and I am a university professor. So I am use to my 50 minute lectures ;). Plus, the whole process takes about 3 hours, which means this is already pretty condensed. Also, I usually am enthusiastic but this was probably after the kids went to bed. Gotta work with what you got! Thanks for watching though.
You are like the Bob Ross of Comic Books... I mean no disrespect. This is very relaxing to watch. 😊

Thanks for picking up a kit. I am glad you found the videos helpful!
Incredible tutorial!
Apparently I'm the only one with audio issues.......lol.........Great video
The ASM 316 is one of the books I need to clean personally. How funny

I've been wanting to do a video like this for a while! I'll have to make one!
Thank you!
I have a double cover of this, without cleaning or pressing it got a 7.0 I really want to clean/press and try again.
That sound volume though.

With this guy you definitely can!
Picked up mine in a goodwill along with several other comics, punisher 1 inclued for 10$

Thanks for your compliments. At this time I am not accepting new customers, but follow me on Instragram for more updates!
I see that you don’t sell your starter kits anymore. Would you be willing to provide maybe a shopping list of what you use?
as im watching this i keep think how it looks under a microscope 🤣 nothing to do with cleaning it but it keeps popping up in my head . oh wow thats awesome you know what the grading is before they send it back man you a professional . ✊️🙏
Great video with fantastic detail. Why do you humidify with the backing board in the centerfold?

A side-by-side before/after shot would have been fitting
I’ll start adding some more of those!
Do you have any more of the cleaning kits? Would love to get one
Great Video. Very helpful. Thank you. I wan't to clean my FF 67 but I am nervous about it.

Just subbed. Would love to see more cleaning videos.
Thanks for subbing! I have one that I am posting today! Just subbed to your channel as well!
just might want to boost that audio though...
Great video!!!
Good video, man.

Awesome video!! where can I buy a kit?
Why are the newsstand copies more preferred? Rarity?
Can you please list the name of the items/brands of what you are using? Please and thanks

Can you please redo/update this with better sound? I think your sound went a bit wonky during setup.
I've had continuous issues with sound. I will see if I can fix!

Nothing wrong in going over the book with a magnifying glass
I've got this book in a 9.8
Me too!
I usually use Cotton circles as I go to wipe the dirt and to remove the dirt from eraser. Question, are you using a poly foam pad?
Need to up the volume here - I can not hear what you are saying :'(
Even 7 months ago that book was more than $90. But hey, I’m happy to pay you $90 for that, no problem at all. :)
Prices have certainly gone crazy since then! All I have left is a Mark Jewlers CGC 9.6! I would love to crack it for a TM sig in the future!!
🤙Cowabunga fam🤙
Great but the audio is too quite
I was all set to watch your video, but I could barely hear it. The audio is very low.
Work in progress! Sorry about the audio… some are better than others after I picked up an external mic.
I got water damage on the upper left where spidey was. Can I still remove it? 😭😭😭 It kinda look a decent F to VG.
Humidification and a press will definitely help. It’s staining caused by water damage that can’t be removed easily.
i bet a little shroom micro dose would get you in the cleaning zone 😉
That certainly would be interesting. I tend to avoid anything that would dull the edges when I work on books!
What the heck happened to the audio...you sound like you're whispering.
Great video though.
Sell your kits to clean
very boring to be honest man, shorter videos and more enthusiasm
