    I totally agree. Over 55 years ago I started shooting off a tripod hunting mule deer in Southern California and many hunts in western states for antelope, deer and elk. In many of those hunts the camera tripod made a significant difference. While in the Marines we used tripods for our spotting scopes during qualifications and coaching our shooters. A number of us were deer hunters and decided to create saddles from angled aluminum. then glued leather in the V to quiet and smooth out the surface. Later Hog Saddles became a Marine Corps standard. Recently while coyote hunting with a friend he shared a new 2024 tripod that is leaps and bounds superior to anything I have made or used. Solid, stable and robust. Crazy shooting platform. Appreciate your perspective! Thanks

    My tripod certainly improved my shooting from my wheelchair as i can't shoot prone or kneeling (or standing lol)

    I love using my BOG deathgrip tripod. I have an XRS chassis so the square clamp locks perfectly on my square forend.
    One thing I do that helps with recoil: I setup the tripod so two of the legs are perpendicular to the rifle stock, then I sit behind the gun, and reach down and grab the left leg (which actually has a grip pad on it) and lean into the rifle. Instant follow-ups.

      This is the way. I use a lot of techniques I've developed from PRS and integrated them into hunting.

      I also love my BOG DeathGrip Carbon Fiber. My regular date for deer is a Bergara HMR and the clamp locks so solid. I deal with recoil at the rifle first (Ultradyne ApolloMax brake - surreal recoil reduction), but also follow the same method you do for handling recoil and followups with the tripod itself.

    Which tripods do you now recommend? I am in very similar terrain and can not see the target in the prone unless I can find a larger rock or higher point. I am thinking about using the sandbag on the tripod. Seems more stable.

    After experiencing a tripod, I’ve added Arca segments to an additional 2 rifles to use them on my tripod also.
    Some however will remain without Arca as to not spoil their lovely classical Germanic stocks.
    With that said, a quality heavy duty tripod makes a massive difference in stability.

    Yes, in the Cape, the "bossies" aren't tall. In the bushveld, it is a different ball game. However, I'm also looking at a tripod for my rifles. Thanks for showing us how to use it and under which circumstances. Yes, the shooting sticks are a bit clumsy. Very instructional video! Thanks, ou Piet.

    Piet chassis systems are cool , but a classic blues and wood stock can be a work of art. This is not saying a chassis system is bad. They are awesome for accuracy.

    Having been to Africa 13 times hunting I can confirm that shooting off conventional sticks is a pain in the ass for most visiting hunters to master, resulting in friction with your PH initially until you get used to them.
    If I was going to back to hunt Africa I definitely would install an arca rail on one of my laminate custom thumbhole stocks and use a top quality tripod. ✅

    The tripod rock from the shot is only down fall linear recoil is key to follow up shots that said 4,AW store mark and sam have that ARCA adapter that let's your ride recoil straight back it having bearings I think pier would like it

    Do all my hunting off a tripod, was using arca setup and carbon tripod when I was running an xrs chassis. But now I'm back in factory stock I've switched to a clamp. Still as steady as arca was. Never leave home without it.👌

    What are your thoughts on clamp style tripod heads for someone who dosent have and maybe dosent want to drill into their stock to attach an arca rail? Are they similar in performance or the arca tops it for stability?

    • @NCETRY
      @NCETRY 9 месяцев назад +1

      Clamps are not very stable. You’re better off putting a sand bag on top of the tripod and resting your rifle on it. WieBad Fortune Cookie or Armageddon Gear Game Changer work great for this application.

    • @henryg2960
      @henryg2960 9 месяцев назад

      Clamps are as stable when used with a beefier sized ball joint. The bigger the ball joint is, the more stable it is. When using a large ball, that arca mount becomes part of the tripod. ✌

    This tripod solution is surely the best way to go for long distance shots. For the regular African hunter it will be difficult to walk and stalk with the rifle and the tripod at the same time. So shooting sticks will be still a very practical way to shoot up to 150 m. In general I would prefer the tripod as well. But the entire set up looks really very technical. Not sure if traditional hunter would give away their rifles and change to this sniper set up. 😊😊

    Unfortunately I hunt in very short range. Sub 100 meters. I've swapped my 3-15 scope for a Eotech sight. With the animals passing through the trees in seconds, my shots are Free Hand now. Harvested 4+ years every season. Tripods would be detrimental for my hunts. The terrain dictates, maybe a 260 meter shot max. Great content as always
