How to Bleed and Grease a Jack - Harbor Freight 3 Ton Low Profile

- UPDATE: Since making this video, it was brought to my attention that I bled the wrong screw. The fill screw is not the Phillips head screw I loosened, it’s the flat head screw just above it on the hydraulics between the springs. This is the correct screw to bleed, although I saw similar results on either one. It’s always best to follow the manufacturer instructions and only bleed the fill screw.
In this video, I give you step by step instructions on how to bleed and grease a jack. I'll be demonstrating on my Harbor Freight, Pittsburgh, 3 Ton, Low Profile Jack, but the procedure is applicable to most jacks.

I did what you said on the video to mine. Took about 5 minutes. I didn't see the phillips screw for the bleed. I turned the flathead. Life is good again and thanks for a great video!

Thanks for the advice. I just drain the old fluid and put new fluid. But i was always wondering how to bleed it. Jack goes very slowly when it's under load. So now i know how to bleed it.

Just a little shortcut. Instead of removing all four cover plate screws and taking the cover plate off; remove both screws from the cover plate that are closest to the saddle (front left/right side of frame). Then you can just flip the cover plate up for access. You might have to loosen the back screws a quarter turn, if they're too tight.

That works for raising the jack quickly from the bottom position but I still have a fair amount of play in the top like the first half a foot foot of travel of the handle doesn't actually move the Jack when it is near the top
Thank dude!! I just purchased a Daytona low profile. And I bought it with warranty so I’m paranoid and I want to be ready how to grease/bleed and fill. Don’t want to screw up.😅😅 I freaking love this things freaking amazing compare to the small black jack lift(it’s not adequate for my needs had to upgrade)
@Mendez_Guzman, glad the video was helpful for you. I LOVE my jack stand and it's worked flawlessly now for almost 2 years. Some Harbor Freight items are crap, but their jacks are good quality.

What about adding hydraulic fluid
Your jack is so mint. My freight jack has scene better days. Rust on the wheels and a custom welds to keep it functional. I put my tools through a lot of abuse.
I really like this Jack I'm lifting heavy trucks and mini uhaul trucks with it! It is cool.
Alright boys, new test, how long does a low profile long reach daytona jack last without ever being greese (i dont have a greese gun and i dont feel like buying one just for the jack)

GMP, thanks for your comment. When I first heard about bleeding a jack it sounded complicated and really it's not. I wanted others to see how easy and quick it is to do.
I think the reason it took 16 pumps is because you loosen the wrong bolt or screw. It took me five pumps to get it all the way high with mine
He said 16 pumps with a load on it, jacking up the minivan in the video. unloaded he said it took six and a half pumps to raise all the way up.
What if you messed with the 2 screws that say don't mess with
I don't have a grease gun.. just the bottle.. can I just remove the screw?
My fitting for the pivot point broke off.. are these items replaceable or is it truely necessary for the jack to function? Also what was that screw that you opened to bled it seems like it was the bleed screw as the other one is for filling oil in.
@Adam A, not sure if the fitting is replaceable, but if it is, it's just a standard grease fitting.
that grease gun fitting on mine broke, I honestly don't know how but I'm going to use it now, and it's just snapped off and there's an open hole can I still run the Jack with it like that? I have to get this rotor replace ASAP. Also I don't have the low profile one that you have mine's red but it says three ton low profile rapid pump....
Edit: also do you know what size threading grease thread that is? And how do I get it out if it snapped off, any advice? Maybe I'll just buy a new one and return this one....
@Ryan Davis, if you use it broken, grease might come out the fitting when you pump it. It’s possible you could unscrew it by using channel lock pliers, otherwise not sure. And the fitting is just a normal size grease fitting. Shouldn’t be hard to find.
you did totally wrong on bleeding ,that's not oil filler plug ,...the oil filler plug is ruuber below !!!!

You're correct, but I just bought one and it doesn't have that screw that he backed out. It only has the oil filler plug.
Wrong plug. The filler plug is further down with a flat-head not Philips.
what to do if it squeaks when pumping under load also have a different hf 3 ton jack that slowly lowers under load
G R, in response to your squeaking question, while mine doesn't squeak, I've heard that some do. I suggest checking any bolts or screws and making sure everything is still tight. The other suggestion is to grease it like I show in the video. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you could do. I highly suggest that you never leave a jack holding up a vehicle without the use of jack stands, even if it's a good jack.
The other jack that lowers slowly under pressure, try pumping it all the way to the top when it's not under load, and then once it reaches the top, keep pumping 6-8 times. Then lower it and see if that fixes it. I've heard in some cases it will. Hope this info helps!

I have the Pittsburgh 2.5 ton low profile with rapid pump. My jack will raise and lower, but it will not work under load, any suggestions? I've tried bleeding it etc.

Jonathan Sandiford , sorry I don’t. It looks like a standard fitting that is found on auto parts like outer tie end rods.
They’re called zurk fittings. They’re the same ones used on car suspensions. However I’m not sure if those come in different sizes
Same thing happened to me any idea what causes this? And can you still use the jack with a broken one?
I think I messed up and did it wrong, I just bought mines today, I followed your steps as you showed and ALOT of fluid went all over the floor, now im not even sure if I want to use it or it it will work properly and I don’t want to try using it because I don’t want to damage it, I’ll look around for a friend to see if they know or help me about this, I’ll probably have to go buy fluid for it, idk
You end up getting it fixed? If all your fluid leaked out, you can buy some more hydraulic fluid from HF and just refill it. It shouldn't damage it at all as long as there is grease and enough fluid.

That's the wrong filler screw!!!!! The fill screw is on the cylinder shaped hydraulic unit directly between the springs!!!!!
Mike Harness, thank you for your comment. You are correct. The funny thing is, it made an improvement on the hydraulics. I just went out and bled the correct fill screw with an additional small increase in results. Thanks for pointing it out. I will put an update in the description below the video.
DIY Jeff, so what was the wrong screw for? There is just one single bleeder screw for the hydraulic fluid, right?

I dont have a screw, I have a rubber plug/stopper? Is that a problem?

It comes with grease in it already ? or does it ?
BadRonald1, it does come with grease already in it. The video is just in case you need to add grease at a later time. However, you do need to bleed it after purchase.

@Murphy Toadster, if you are under the 90 day warranty I'd highly suggest taking it back for a replacement. If the cap won't stay on it is an entry point for dirt and grime to get in.

So it took you a couple days to to bleed a floor jack? You did it wrong man, it like be leaving open the brake lines on a car and pumping the brakes to try and bleed it. All you did is bring more air into the system 😂
Mine I have plug I try everything not work at all .I don't buy this piece of junk again more from harbor freight look like they sell cheap stuff like dollar store
